THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, October alst we attended the District III fall meeting hosted by Lodge No. 25, Ennis. The attendance was not as good as it could have been, however, this being the time of the year, this can be expected. District III Chairman Ed Mazanec, Sr., conducted the meeting efficiently and with fraternal consideral iork. All oi the district officers ga ,a; their reports and are to be min , tea() .d for their efforts, District III ialrector Sid Pokladnik gave his raport on his attendance at the NFCA in Hollywood, Florida, his District III director's report, and the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director's report. Frankly, the delegates to the XXIInd SPJST Convention are to be commended for their generous contribution to the charitable cause of relieving the rest home debt by the gift of $100,000 toward that cause. It was a benevolent move which displays our Society's attitude in helping our a ged and helping our government and nation care for those who need it. The directors of our rest homes do appreciate this fraternal jesture and realize the value of such actions. This was displayed by all of them, especially at the convention, and since, at district meetings, wherever we have attended. While addressing the meeting I stated that if the excerpts from the minutes of the Supreme Lodge meeting held October 12-14 contained anything like what was in

a letter sent to the Publication Committee at' their meeting October 30th„ I would have no other course to follow than to explain to our members as I did to the PC. Here is what transpired in chronological order and then compare the report. In the July SL meeting President Morris brought up the subject of the editor's clerical help. Director Broz (IV) stated that the Vestnik was still only 32 pages. Director Pokladnik stated that I accepted the job with no condition of having clerical help. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska saw we were getting nowhere and suggested I bring an estimate of how many hours of help was used. I agreed. Director Pokladnik (evidently speaking for the audit group, and I don't know how many there are), questioned a $28.50 voucher for my trip in April to Taylor Lodge No. 29, to the annual Czech students' and professors' meeting and said that this was not an SPJST affair and Brother Morris agreed. I stated that I would refund the money. Next was a voucher for $73.50 for mileage to officiate at a funeral, at the fandly's request. I explained that I had a long-distance call late at night requesting that I be there the next afternoon and I agreed to do so. I was told that since neither President Morris or Vice President Hejny were contacted the trip was N(Y1' au-

thorized. I stated I would refund that also. The sum was $102.Q0. After attending the meeting for 21/2 days and seeing what had transpired, I began to wonder about some of the questionable harmony that had been displayed during some of the personal exchanges. I began to realize that fraternalism was being set aside for personality, especially in one exchange of remarks which did not pertain in any way to me. Wednesday morning, October 13, my wife went to pick up her medical report at Scott & White Clinic and, at noon I took the other vehicle and attended the Supreme Lodge meeting. I listened to repbrts by Brothers Hejny and Mikeska. At about 15 minutes to 5, I was asked about the July decision. I showed the executive body the two $400 checks I had paid Maxine for July and August and told them that she was worth $100 a week to me, but that what they would do was their affair and decision. Brother Hejny stated that I accepted the job without provisions for clerical help and that he gave his wife money, also. I asked him how much help did she give him in the office; I received no answer. Naturally, he has SFM Silas Smith and about three assistants. Brother Morris came up with this observation: "The Vestnik is still only 32 pages and the increased circulation is no added

problem and, besides, when I was editor, I did it in 3 days." I did not arrive at the XXth Convention in Dallas until Thursday afternoon June 14, 1968, but this is what we read on page 30 of the convention proceeding6of Wednesday, June 13th, a.m. "Sister Frances Olexa (88) stated that the recommendation of the Salary and Donations Committee was unfair to the editor, that he should have the same salary as a Supreine Lodge officer," and "Bro. Jarda, Cerny (111) said that this committee should realize there is more work and more pressure .put on the editor." I cannot reconcile this with the three-day remark. Let me add here that when I took over this job in January 1969 there were no files of anything; the picture cuts were in cardboard boxes and we had to look for them.. Now the cuts are filed alphabetically and I bought a legal width filing cabinet at my own expense ($72), and we have a complete file of all lodges, all district secretaries, district sales representatives, district youth counselors and all SL officers and their correspondence and it all has proved very valuable. It was getting late and I was more interested in my wife's health report than useless discussion and requested to the SL to do whatever their desired. Legal Adviser Lesikar asked if four days clerical help would be satisfactory and I replied that anything would help, compared to the nothing I had been receiving, I appreciated his and Bro. Mikeska's efforts and understanding. I did riot ask for the four days as is stated. I then presented them with the $102 check and reminded them that they seem to have a double standard of assessing values of trips for the good of our Society. On one hand they questioned SL President Morris on the occasion of bringing a letter to West and charging mileage for doing so and attending a 'Christmas party at his Lodge No. 66. at Elm Mott, and charging mileage and then allowing both to be paid. I told them that the actions in both cases were contradictory and, to me, did not seem comparable. I asked them when was a trip to a Christmas social more desirable than a requested trip to officiate at a funeral. I guess that

Wednesday, November 10, 1978 is what the excerpts refer to as lecturing. As I shook hands with all of them to leave I made this statement: Brothers, I guess you know that I can always go directly to the delegates if I desire to do so; I know what they had in mind.

CHARTERING CEREMONIES Lodge No. 180, Burleson

This is not a threat; this is a mere statement of simple true facts and everyone knows that. Any member has the right to write to the delegates. As for by wife, Maxine, and myself, after considering the matter we have agreed that we have more important matters in the work of the Vestnik and we consider the matter closed. We plan to work with the same loyalty, diligence, devotion and fraternal attitude as always and $1,000 a week would not increase our sincere effort one bit nor decrease our realization that there is lack of understanding in certain quarters, and placing personality above what should be fraternal spirit. I request that there be no letters written to the Vestnik about this matter; I do not intend to print them. •

President Morris reported that at the recent State Royalty, Charlotte Banik of District III was chosen as State Queen and Randy Flasowski of District II was named State King. Director Pokladnik stated that he had heard several compliments on President Morris' excellent address during the Czech Day at the State Fair. Honorary President Edward L. Marek arrived to visit the meeting. Honorary President Marek reported on the progress he has made in gathering information for the purpose of writing a history of the Society. He also discussed his f u -turesachpln daskefor other suggestions. He said that he would continue gathering information during the first six months of 1977 and then begin assembling the material and writing the history. He was complimented on his efforts and appreciation was expressed to him for the fine job he is doing. SUBSIDY TO CZECH INSTRUCTORS — President Morris read a letter from a district secretary recommending that the Supreme Lodge check to see if there is a way to subsidize teachers of Czech in junior and community colleges. He presented a questionnaire completed by a university lecturer, giving various information pertaining to his teaching of the Czech language and stating his net remuneration from the university. The convention action was discussed at length and some of the members of the Supreme Lodge felt that we did not have sufficient information to make a determination with reference to any subsidy to him. Consequently, a motion to table the matter was offered and adopted. Recess for lunch was taken at 12:10 p.m. and the meeting was called back to order at 1:30 p.m. President Morris asked to be excused from the meeting to attend the funeral of Edwin Kohutek, whereupon, he turned the gavel over to Vice President Hejny. A motion was adopted providing that general correspondence not requiring action of the board such as acknowledgements, etc., should be placed on the secretary's agenda regardless whether it is addressed to the president, some other of-

ficer, or the editor. President Morris' report was accepted by the body. Vice President Hejny reported on the following: SALES—Insurance sales through the 3rd quarter were reported to be $12,716,545.00. NEW LODGES — New lodges were reportedly being organized in Irving and Centerville. The individuals organizing the Centerville lodge requested that they be placed in District I. On motion duly passed, it was decided that if and when a lodge is organized in Leon County that the county be annexed to District I. REINSURANCE — A letter was read from Actuary David Huff recommending that we raise our retention level. On motion duly passed the insurance retention was increased as follows, effective Jan. 1, 1977: 0 through 55 — $40,000 56 through 60 - $15,000 61 through 70 — $ 5,000 President Morris returned and resumed his oral report. SPJST DOCUMENTARY SLIDES — The status of the project was reported. It was agreed that the Supreme Lodge officers and Directors Kubena and Pokladnik proceed with photographer Glenn Psencik in completing the documentary slide project. Letters of acknowledgement were read from two recipients of the $25 aid donations approved by the XXIInd Convention. A letter from Westfest, Inc., was read thanking the Society for the display from the SPJST Museum used during the Westfest in West, Texas. CONVENTION CHORUS RECORD — After discussion, it was agreed on motion duly passed to postpone action on the making of the record until the January Supreme Lodge meeting. State Youth Director Dorothy Massey reported on the following: She elaborated on some items on her written report. She brought back for consideration the previously tabled recommendation for payment of $15 plus mileage and meals to be paid to youth leaders or assistants who attend the district training classes. A motion approving the recommendation was made, seconded and it carried.

A motion was made and seconded that SYD Massey present a report in the January Supreme Lodge meeting indicating the expenditure per each active youth. The motion carried. There was some discussion of the fact that there were no lodge eliminations before the District YADs. It was agreed that further consideration be given to this procedure when the new youth rules are brought up for action in January. A motion was adopted allowing District III to hold a training class this fall for this year only. SYD Massey's report was accepted by the body. SPJST MERIT SALARY SYSTEM — President Morris suggested some amendments to the employees' merit salary system and they were accepted. It was decided that President Morris present some ideas on setting up a. long-range job description system for home office employees and report in the January meeting. Recess for the day was taken at 5 pm. and the meeting was called back to order Oct. 13th, at 9 a.m. Vice President Hejny resumed his report. EMPLOYEES' RETIR EMENT PLAN — The required annual report was' stated to have been tiled. SALES SEMINAR — During the last meeting, Vice President Hejny had been authorized to check into the feasibility of retaining a university lecturer to hold a sales seminar for the benefit of our sales representatives. The cost would be $300 per day for the lecturer and his assistant, plus all expenses. After discussion, a motion was adopted to have Vice President 'Hejny arrange to schedule the seminar for 197'7. It was agreed that each director and district sales representative get together and recommend the name of two appropriate sales representatives from each district to invite to the seminar. It was decided that the sales representatives be paid mileage and be reimbursed for meals and lodging while attending the seminar and that the Supreme Lodge host those present for one special evening meal. LOCAL AND DISTRICT SALES

Wednesday, November 10, 1976 REPRESENTATIVES (DSRs) — It was reported that the DSRs had requested that consideration be given to include them and local sales representatives in the employees' group hospitalization plan if feasible. The Salary & Donations Committee report including the recommendation reportedly had been approved by the XXIInd Convention, subject to its feasibility. It was moved that the Supreme Lodge officers check into the feasibility of including the sales representatives in our group hos pit -aliztonpla drepothir findings during the January Supreme Lodge meeting. The motion was seconded and it carried. Honorary President Marek arrived and was present during the meeting. State Field Manager Silas Smith

reported on the following: SFM Smith referred to his writ-

ten report and explained several of his contacts with sales representatives. Suggestion was made that SFM smith bring the board a list of his recommendations in regard to sales. SFM Smith's report was accepted. LIABILITY INSURANCE FOR LOCAL SALES REPRESENTATIVES There was a discussion on the possibility of including local sales representatives under our comprehensive automobile liability policy. Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska asked that the board hear a building demolition contractor, with reference to the repossessed property formerly used as the SPTST Home Office. The contractor answered various questions asked by the members of the board and the matter was to be considered later. Recess for lunch was taken at 12 noon and the meeting was called back to ceder at 1:30 p.m. Vice President Hejny resumed his report. After discussion, a motion was proposed that the president designate one officer to attend each district meeting on a rotating basis and that no officer be required to attend meeting of the same district in succession. The motion carried with 8 voting in favor and 4 opposing. MINUTES AND PROPOSALS — DISTRICT SALES REPRESENTATIVES' MEETING—A letter which

appeared in the Aug. 4th, 1976 issue of the Czech section of the Vestnik was reportedly discussed by the DSRs. The members of the board also discussed the letter. It was agreed unanimously on motion duly passed that a letter be written to the Publication Committee calling their attention to a letter in the Czech section of the Vestnik issue of Aug. 4th and further calling attention to the fact that such letter is controversial and inimical to the best interests of the Society and that it should not have been printed. A motion was unanimously adapted to recommend to the Publication Committee that any other Czech letters that appear to be controversial should be translated into English by the Publication Committee or that the committee should have some disinterested party translate such letter. Past Secretary Raymond Urbanovsky, was present and addressed the board briefly. Editor Sefcik arrived and visited the meeting. PROPOSALS — The proposals of the DSRs and the recommended insurance quotas for 1977 were discussed. No changes were made by the board although a number of the proposals were studied prior to acceptance. A motion was adopted that figures on the cost of acquisition of new business be reported to the Supreme Lodge as soon as such information is available. REDUCTION OF PREMIUMS — In accordance with convention action, report was made on the possibility of reducing premiums on large certificates. The recommendation of our actuary was presented outlining a different procedure of discounts using a. $10,000 certificate as a base. It was reported that the new procedure would not be convenient for our sales representatives since they are accustomed to calculating premiums using $1,000 as a base policy. After discussion, it was suggested that the matter of discounts on both decreasing term and level term be referred back to our actuary and that we continue the same procedure of discounts presently used attempting to implement larger discount for larger certificates. A motion to that et-

7 feet was made, seconded and it carried. EXPENSE STUDY — The Insurance Committee recommended that review be made of decreasing premiums on larger permanent plane of insurance. A letter from Actuary David Huff directed to that convention action was read. He advised that we update our expense study last made in 1969, before considering any changes in premiums on our permanent plans of insurance. Decision was made to update our expense study relative ' tet acquisition and servicing costs. It was brought out that the• rate books could not be reprinted until the expense study is completed. Vice President Hejny's report was accepted by the body. Seeretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported on the following: REAL ESTATE LOANS Loans delinquent over three months were taken up and appropriate actions were authorized on each of the loans considered. Report was made that as of Sept. 30th, 1976, investment in 1,182 real estate loans amounted to $17,743: 351.38. Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska read a letter from an SPJST lodge stating they felt that they should not have had to pay for a title search, attorney's fees and clerk fees in connection with the recent increase of their lodge building loan. The lodge requested return of the loan application fee which was done in line with the convention action permitting lodges to file loan applications without paying an application fee. The procedure that had been followed was explained and reviewed and it was noted that there was no other manner of handling such a transaction that would enable the Society to increase a loan and retain a valid first lien in accordance with state laws. A comprehensive report was made on each of the real estate loan properties foreclosed during the quarter. Recommendations were made on disposal of the properties and the board set prices and authorized actions after thoroughly considering the options available. The remainder of the SecretaryTreasurer's report was deferred until later to give Editor Sefcik an opportunity to address the body, at which time he discussed several

Wednesday, November 10, 1976 LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS SOFTBALL TEAM Dear Brothers and Sisters: The team held its annual steak dinner and awards banquet Sunday afternoon, Sept. 19th, 1976. The dinner was an outdoor affair held at the home of Ida and Lionel Schulz. Rather, it started out in the backyard, but by eating time, the rain came and everyone had to move some place indoors to eat and somehow we found room. We did mess up their home and for we apologize. The afternoon started out fine with visiting, playing horseshoes, and enjoying a few drinks. It didn't rain very hard until eating time. The steaks were furnished by Willie and Carlyn Ondrusek, and boy were they delicious! They were cooked to order by our special chefs Connie Brennan and Albin Vrana; they did a terrific job, and had no complaints. Dips and chips were brought by the officers' wives and wives of the players and they were delicious, too; some brought cakes, cookies and pastry. Our thanks for your thoughtfulness and your generosity. We wish to thank Willie and Carlyn Ondrusek for the delicious steaks, pivo and for all the nice gifts that you gave to everyone. We cannot ever thank you enough_ so may we use the old cliche; gosh, thanks for everything and we really enjoyed ourselves. May we thank Annie and Otto Janousek for furnishing the ice and all the soft drinks. This was truly a generous deed. Also, thanks to Ida and Lionel for letting us use (your backyard as well as your whole house, and again, we are sorry for making such a mess, but everyone truly enjoyed the party. I also wish to express my thanks to Lil Janna for helping plan as well as for shopping for most of the food that was needed for the steak dinner; and also my thanks to Ida Schulz for helping with the purchases, including the preparation and serving of the food. My thanks are extended to Lionel Schulz, Albin Vrana, Jerry Manak, Jo Ann Manak, Bessie Petr, Ida Schulz, Lillie Jarma, Don Jarma and Bobby Dryden for helping transport the tables and chairs to the party and then back to the lodge build-

ing. The most valuable player award, a vote by the team players themselves, was won by Don Jarma; also, this year's batting champion, with a .421 batting average, was Don Jarma. Our congratulations to Don from the team and also from the manager, you had an outstanding season and we are all looking forward to having a good team next season. My thanks to all of the players, it was almost fun handling and managing the team this past season. We won one league championship and held our own in the City Major League. I am looking forward to next season. The team appreciated the fact that all of our lodge officers and their wives, our District III director and wife were all able to attend our banquet. We enjoyed your presence and deeply thank you for all of your support. We also wish to extend our thanks to our team sponsors for sponsoring us this past season and wish to thank our mother lodge for assisting us and letting us have a team, and we hope you will be as kind and generous next season. Again, we wish to say thank you to Willie and Carlyn for being our hosts for this banquet. May Lil and I express our thanks to the team for the flower pot and flower stand and for the precious rod and reel; we deeply appreciate your kindness and your generosity. I promise to chain the rod and reel to my wrist every time I use it, or should it go overboard again, am I to jump in the lake with it? Our thanks again for the gifts. I hope I haven't overlooked anyone because it has been some two months since the event took place, if I have overlooked someone, I assure you it was not intentional. In closing, we, the team, wish to thank everyone who helped in any way this past year to make this such an enjoyable and successful season and we are looking forward to fielding another good team next year. My thanks to the editor for deciphering and for printing all my reports this past season I know it was a chore. Fraternally, Ben Jarma Team Manager

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: This should be a comparatively short letter. The Halloween party for the children was a spooky success. There was a spookhouse manned by Ruthie Bartula, Vivian Hegwood, and Debbie and Linda Wehring. Melissa McSpadden came in first place in the costume contest, she was dressed as a witch; Lynn Pflughaupt came in second as a hippy, and Kim McSpadden came in third dressed as a "Ma Kettle" type. It's a shame everyone couldn't have won. They were all dressed well. There were games 'and bobbing for apples and then they enjoyed sandwiches, drinks and cookies. A big thank you should go to Youth Leader Ruth Duncan, Margaret Allbritton and Clara Broz, who organized the party. They worked hard on the planning and decorations. Thanks also to those who helped cleanup afterward; that's just as important as the preparations. Don't forget that the youth will hold their monthly meeting Sunday, Nov. 14 at 3 p.m. Parents are always welcome. As I promised here are the menus for the November Social Night suppers: Thursday, Nov. 11 Smothered steak, hamburgers and French fries. Thursday, Nov. 18 Turkey, dressing and trimmings, hamburgers and fries. The kitchen will be closed Thursday, Nov. 25th due to Thanksgiving Day. I am sure by that evening everyone will be so full they won't want to look at food until the next morning. Don't forget that the hamburgers also include cheeseburgers. Registration was held on /September 22nd, with the very gratifying results that 26 persons had enrolled, exceeding the minimum enrollment. After reading the actions of the recent convention, Don stated that he believed that their program met the SPJST criteria of . . . state-approved, regular Czech courses." Miss Mary Dvoracek is the instructor and is one of only a few persons in Texas who is certified to teach the Czech language. The classes are being held every Wednesday night, but there are plans to offer Czech in the high school as part of the regular day-time curriculum next year. Don went on to say: "We can certainly use the funds, as we have only very little in the way of audiovisual aids, etc., which could be used for Czech instruction. (We have since sent some teaching aid material to the class.) Incidentally, the encouragement and help we have been receiving from you and Calvin Chervenka, among others, has been most heart-warming for all of us here at West. We hope we can repay the SPJST by expanding the study of the Czech language and heritage throughout this area. If you are ever in town, please feel free to stop by and see how things are progressing. Again, many thanks." Since the initial enrollment, the number of students taking the

TIM KOSrOM has been a member of the SPJST for 49, years, and became the 19th president of Lodge 88 in 1962, serving as president for five years during which time the present building was constructed. He was a member of the Building Committee of 1963 and has served on the Auditing Committee. He has been a member of the Dramatic Club for the past 47 years, Brother Tim participated in more than 200 stage productions, has served as the Dramatic Club president and is presently the club director. He became chairman of the Entertainment Committee when it was jointly operated as part of the Board of Trustees. It's rather ironic that with Tim's many years of service at Lodge 88, he was kicked off the Board of Trustees for failure to attend the required number of meetings. (Working long hours kept him from making the meetings.) He has been a member of the Choral Club for 15 years serving as director for a long time. He has been vice president for several years and has served on the Social Night Committee since its beginning in 1966. Tim Kostom is proud that he has been able to contribute and foster the principles of benevolence, humanity, and brotherhood among the many members of Lodge 88 for the past 49 years. He has been very instrumental in upholding the valued Czech traditions of language, culture, and history through his continuous efforts in the Dramatic Club and Choral Group of Lodge 88. We salute President Tim Kostom. * BRO. ED KADLECEK has been a member of the SPJST for 53 years and became the 20th President of our lodge in 1969. At the age of 76, he is the oldest active living president of our lodge. Brother Ed, as he is known to all of us, has been a member of the Auditing and Entertainment Committees and was a vice president for several years. He has also served on the Board of Trustees several years. At the present time

he is an active member of the Czech Choral Group, a cigarsmoking auditor of the Social Night Committee and a Member of the Board Of Trustees. Brother Ed's stamina as a strong, healthy Czech was witnessed a few years ago at our lodge when he inadvertently mutilated one of his fingers by slamming a car door on it. Taken to the hospital by another lodge president, Brother Ed puffed on his cigar and had a big smile while the doctor sewed the finger back in place and the other helpful president fainted away! Brother Ed has answered many calls for help when something goes wrong at the lodge and has spent much time here repairing and looking after things. We salute President Ed Kadlecek. * * SISTER TILLIE HELMCAMP our 21st president, has been a member of Lodge 88 for 16 years. During that time she has served as lodge youth leader for '3 years, secretary for 2 years, second vice president for 4 years and president for 2 years — 1971 and 1972, and Secretary of the Board of Trustees for 4 years. She also was District V Youth Director for 3 years and has been District Secretary since 1989. Sister Tillie, as president, tried to provide special entertainment for all by showing the beautiful films on Czechoslovakia and other countries. She even had a heart specialist to come and show a film and give a lecture on prevention of heart diseases. She always tried to have some entertainment at the lodge meetings — usually a funny skit about the different committees. One of the funniest skits featured departed First Vice President Emil Horelica and Sister Della Kadlecek. Della was telling Emil how a policeman caught her for speeding while she was rushing to get to the lodge in time for the capsule drawing, and when she mentioned "capsule" the officer wanted to get her same water so she could take one! We salute President Tillie Helmcamp. * * BRO. ERNEST 3. HANKA, our 22nd president, has been a member of Lodge 88 for 45 years. He served as treasurer from 1947 through 1950 and was our first vice president for 9 years. He has served

for many years in the capacity of legal advisor, affording our lodge untold hours of service. He was on the board of trustees and also served as chairman. He was our president during the years 1973 and 1974 and has served as Director of District V for 8 years. Brother Hanka was Chairman of the Convention Committee of Lodges 88 and 142 for the 1972 State Convention in Houston. He was one of the chief speakers of our lodge at the conventiona l and when Brother Hanka spoke, they listen ed! He served as vice chairman at the Dallas and Houston conventions, Brother Hanka Is the kind of fraternalist who spreads cheer wherever he went. Not only did he always say something witty, I can remember when he led us in singing "Happy Birthday." We salute President Ernest J. Hanka. SPJST --
