Custom coupe is a long-term project BY TOM KNOX WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

This beauty has been a labor of love for Mike Holcomb of Omaha. He and wife, Stephanie, have had the 1936 Ford Five-window Coupe for about 14 years. Within a year of buying the car Mike started making tweaks and customizing the coupe. He did all of the body work himself. Mike lengthened the rear fenders, doing the metal work at his shop. Marvin Naggatz taught Mike how to do the metal work. With another friend, Fernando Torres, he designed and upholstered the interior, putting the Ford V-8 insignia in the ceiling. Mike’s interest in cars began when he was a child. His father owned a gas station and used

car lot in Omaha. On the same block since 1953, Mike and his brother, Craig, still work at and own the used car lot today. The Ford Coupe is a driver. Rain or shine Mike has taken the car on road trips and just last weekend took the car up to Minnesota. Mike will be at the July 12 Cruiser’s for the Breath of Life Fourth Annual Car Show with the two-toned coupe, which won last year’s Ambassador’s Choice Award. The coupe’s paint was done by Dave Chalek. With non-participant judges, there will be several awards and a new Ambassador’s Choice Award will be given out. The Friday night show is a fundraiser, with more than 90 percent of the proceeds from the show going to the American Lung Association.

COURTESY OF MARK CHICKINELLI

Mark Chickinelli took over the restoration of this 1932 Chevrolet Cabriolet after his father, Val Chickinelli, suffered a stroke in 2010 that left him unable to complete the project. Val will drive the car in this year’s Ralston Independence Day Parade on July 4.

Son finishes ’32 Chevy Cabriolet for his father BY JEFF BARNES

V

WORLD-HERALD CORRESPONDENT

al Chickinelli always said this Chevy would be his last car. The Omaha business owner once owned more than a hundred collector cars, says son Mark, but the 1932 Cabriolet was going to be the final one that he restored. Life — and the twists and turns it sometimes makes — got in the way, however. After starting the restoration in 2001, fire struck Val’s business — Omaha Plating Company — in 2007. Much of the car’s components were there. Gone were the rare windshield, the convertible top mechanisms, headlights, ornaments, horns, and many other interior, and exterior trim pieces. “We had the chassis, body, fenders and wheels at his home and that was it,” Mark said. “Everything else was in the fire.” While still assessing what should be done with the car, another family-changing event hit: The senior Chickinelli suffered a debilitating stroke in 2010. That left the son with a dilemma — restart the restoration or sell the car? The cost of the restoration and the difficulty in finding parts were daunting, but Mark also knew they’d get next to nothing for what remained. Ultimately, knowing it was his father’s wish, Mark decided to finish the car. An illustrator and designer, he’d helped out with Val’s restorations but never headed one. Knowing it was going to take considerable funds to round up the needed parts, he first had to ask his sister (who had power of attorney) if he could take on the project if financing was found. When Annette said yes, Mark then brought in a longtime friend of his dad. Bob Chalek once owned the car. He sold it to another collector in 1959 before Val Chickinelli bought it in 1961. “The neat thing about Bob is that he started working on cars at 16, taking pieces to my dad at Omaha Plating,” said Mark. “Bob’s now 79 — he’s my dad’s longest and oldest customer and a genius on Chevrolets and Pontiacs.” He asked Chalek many questions about the restoration before finally asking him to take it over, rebuilding it at Chalek’s home in

Malvern, Iowa. That left Mark to find the parts, which turned out to be a two-and-a-half-year effort, even with the Internet. Some parts were salvaged from the fire — he said the headlights, dented and bumped, were probably the hardest thing to do since the cowl was die cast. The vent doors were also salvaged. “It was probably about six- to seven-thousand dollars worth of chrome to do on it,” Chickinelli said. This was not something to be done second rate. The 1932 Chevrolet Cabriolet was called a “baby Cadillac” — it not only looked like the Cadillac (albeit shorter and smaller), but it also has a certain amount of luxury. “This was the top of the line in the model series,” Chickinelli said. “It had more chrome than the Cadillac, and this one had all the options, with the spoked wheels, the trim, dual horns, dual side mounts, side lights, the landau roof and the leather seats.” They finished in February this year. Val had mapped out what he wanted to do to the car, but Mark had the chance for his input. “I’m more of an ‘original all the way’ guy,” he said. “Dad had piped leather for the seats and the panels were wrong; I got it back to stock, taking out the piping and restoring the panels to what came out of the factory.” Val Chickinelli’s dream was always to drive the car in the hometown Ralston Independence Day Parade on July 4 with his oldest sister, Rosemarie, Mark said. “His sister has passed, but we are going to drive it in the parade, just like he wanted.”
