T

he saga began after the turn of the century. The Quill Lake Plains area opened in 1903 for homesteading and by 1905 - 1906, settlers began arriving. Soon sod shacks dotted the landscape as settlers began breaking the land, seeding and harvesting the crop produced by Mother Earth. With the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1907, life became much easier for this new breed of Canadians. The Canadian Pacific Railway paid, homesteader, Mackenzie $900.00 for a quarter of land, on which the village of Drake is presently situated and the right to find another homestead. The North Star Elevator and section house were built and an old box car, served as the station which the Canadian Pacific Railway named Drake, for Sir Francis Drake, the most famous of all Elizabethan sea captains to first sail around the world. The streets of Drake are named after crew members, Hawkins, Howard, Gilbert, Norreys and Cadiz. Today, Drake has a population of two hundred and fifty and is best known for Bergen Industries, an agricultural welding and fabrication company; Drake Meat Processors, famous for their Smoked Farmer Sausage and Robin Bartel, National Hockey League player and a member of Team Canada at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia in 1984. The village of Drake is also the home of a deeply rooted agricultural family with a vision.....the Blair’s! Early in the summer of 1905, T. Sidney Blair filed for homestead rights on S.E. Section 22, Township 32, Range 23, then returned to the Ottawa Valley that fall. Born in Scotland, Sidney immigrated to Boston, Connecticut and then

on to Vermont but finally found employment west of Ottawa in the settlement of Pakenham. In the spring of 1906, he went back west with a carload of settler effects and built a one room house with a small upstairs and a cellar below the house for the storage of vegetables. He also constructed a sod stable for livestock, protecting them from cold prairie winters. T. Sidney Blair purchased additional parcels of neighboring land enlarging their farming operation. Early in the fall of that year, his wife Elizabeth with son Lindsay (at the age of two) and infant Alice, came west via the railroad. (Grand-father Lindsay had paid her way first class, as he refused to risk her and the family on the harvest excursion.) The couple raised five children, four boys, Lindsay (J.L.), Sidney A. (known to all as Sandy), Clayton, Gilbert and daughter Alice. All the children attended Bloomfield country school, seven miles west of Drake. The high schools of neighboring Lanigan and Drake provided secondary education. A terrible accident immobilized T. Sidney Blair causing him to live in constant pain

Since the end of May, I have had a lot of windshield time touring purebred and commercial operations in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, then back through all four provinces a second time and now starting the third. There have been a couple of common themes throughout; a late growing season and a lot of optimism in the cattle business. The outlook for the cow/calf producer has never looked better and although it’s going to take a lot more operating and a little faith from the banks, feeders have everyone is in agreement that the next ten years in the more margin in feeding these high dollar calves than they beef cattle market look great! In this high tech world of have had in years and that is what it takes…everyone mass production, nobody is ever going to be able to figure out a way to “factory farm” beef cattle, a cow’s gestation is involved needs to make money. long and you can’t control the environment of wide open The fact that there are less dispersals, both purebred and spaces, where a cow thrives the best and most efficiently. commercial this fall, is positive, people don’t hate their cows when there is money in them. Early this spring I had The number of bulls going to town, post breeding, gets a major market operator tell me all their fall bred cow my heart rate up. Most auction marts are reporting sales were booked solid. That same manager told me at double the usual number of bulls coming to town. It is the end of July, that half had cancelled. Now that does understandable why many ranchers do not want to not mean the cowherd is going to jump into expansion winter older bulls when they can ship them early for a mode, in fact, I believe it will continue to contract for a record price, in many cases, close to or above the original while. This fall the average cull rate on most ranches will purchase price. Take that salvage value, add eight months be double that of normal. Everyone I talked to is planning feed, some fence repair, a semen test, some death loss to “clean house”, wild ones, poor producers, bad footed, factored in and purchase new semen tested, delivered bad uddered or just plain ugly, are all heading to town bulls when you need them. I recently talked to one larger at $1.10 to $1.30 or better still...are getting on a truck, producer who pulled and shipped all his bulls except the with a one way ticket. There was not a significant amount two he purchased this spring. of heifers sent out into breeding pastures this spring. I know of several groups that ended up contracted for feed Now, purebred breeders, don’t start to have greedy and slaughter before the bulls got turned out or were thoughts! I already said that the cowherd is going to pulled after only a few days because the guarantee of the continue to shrink, so over all the need for bulls will be contract was too many dollars to pass up in September, less and in the last twenty years that I’ve been involved on the hope of a bred heifer sale in December. My feeling in this industry, I have never seen a shortage of bulls! Be is that heifer calves will all come to town this fall along ruthless with the knife and cash in the “he might make with their brothers, due to their value as the general the bull sale if we feed the hell out of him” calves. You do rancher’s attitude is “it’s my time to cash in”, and no one not need to put all that feed into him, semen test, picture, catalogue him and then ship him, cause there was not can blame them. anyone needing that medium quality bull at your sale...you I’m very optimistic about the bred cow market this fall as will be doing yourself and the industry a favor. Next spring numbers offered are less...people want to expand their you will be able to gross more money on fewer bulls than inventories and for the first time, in a long time, their you ever have and the steers you sell, will pay the bills bankers are on board. The business model works and upfront this fall.

Page 70

Page 18 You Ought to Know... that the Hereford breed has ended a wonderful year 2013! Success can be measured in many areas... primarily selling prices are everyone’s first guess and many of the annual sales measured an increase of growth in average of twenty to thirty percent without many real high prices. Salvage values helped by keeping an improved basis on the bottom end but the biggest increase was in the middle portion of the sales. Increased farm gate cash flow positions were a factor in addition to the bumper harvest which has influenced the entire country. Success in the Hereford breed can be measured by perception; the perception of livestock producers who are using other breeds. The RBC Beef Supreme Challenge hosted by Canadian Western Agribition is perceived by many as the Stanley Cup or Super Bowl in purebred seedstock. Each year seventy or eighty of the best breeding cattle from all breeds vie for the Supreme bull and female title. Along with bragging rights, a purse of ten thousand dollars and various other prizes are included with the victory. The cattle are evaluated by the composite system, using five independent qualified judges secretly chosen from all the various beef breeds. The top ten females and top ten males are recognized from which the two Supremes are selected. Since its inception fifteen years ago, four Hereford bulls have been selected as the best of all the breeds. In 2013, although a Hereford was not selected Supreme, twenty-five percent of the top ten finalists were Hereford which included four powerful bulls and most everyone would agree that was the best group of Hereford cattle ever at the RBC. Since the judges are from various breeds, and their perception of the Hereford cattle paraded before them was highly favorable, consider the positive conclusions made by many others who viewed the Herefords at Canadian Western Agribition. This perception bolds well for Hereford future! We are not without problems...namely shortages. The number of straight-bred Hereford cow herds is diminishing rapidly, as many golden age producers have “packed it in” since 2003, while their sons sought employment in the oil and gas industry. The past half a decade of successful exports to offshore nations has thinned and aged, purebred herds especially, since all the export cattle were under two years of age. Demand for straight-bred pregnant young females was very evident these past few months especially for the operation just north of Irvine, Alberta. To replenish this straight-bred void will take many years and plenty of determination and breed loyalty since the population of seedstock producers continues its descending path. The beef industry needs Hereford in the system for efficiency, temperament and most importantly ...breed identity. Since the cow retention and restocking of a highly voided cow herd inventory has not begun in North America, the question looms....”How long will it take?” There is one certainty .... we have less members offering a much improved product; hence, Herefords can compete with the best of any breed!

and confined to a wheel chair, until his passing in 1928. Sandy

(Sidney A.) quit school to help on the family farm which he later operated as a partnership with brothers Lindsay and Clayton. Lindsay attended the University Of Saskatchewan, College Of Agriculture where he received his degree; while Clayton and Gilbert joined the armed forces as the winds of war swept over the globe. In July 1942, Clayton, a flight Sergeant in the R.A.F. went missing in action; his body was recovered from the North Sea and laid to rest in a Dutch cemetery in Amsterdam, Holland. In September 1944, Major Gilbert Blair was killed during action in Italy. The death of Clayton dissolved the partnership, but Sandy and Lindsay formed a new one changing the direction of many lives, under the name Blair Brothers.

Kevin & Vera, We have been very pleased with the Progress son we purchased with Shane Dicks from your sale in 2012. He has consistently sired low birth weight calves with a 68 lb. average on our Angus heifers. The calves are full of vigor with explosive growth to weaning. We have enough trust in him that he has been collected and will be used as an AI sire on a group of heifers for our 1st Annual Known Genetics Sale. Again, we thank you and look forward to utilizing more Sandhill Farms genetics! Sincerely,

You Ought to Know... the year 2014 was real. All of us are aware of the spike in beef cattle prices... breeders and their commercial customers are finally being rewarded for their dedication and toil. Moreover, the amazing demand for commercial, white face replacement females is showing us that the beef cattle producer is sourcing British influence replacements with breed identity. Those who sourced quality sires in the past decade or less, are benefiting by a greater return on their investment... but in times such as these, anyone can be an expert! Each year, when a sports channel is turned on, one can find a U.S. College Bowl Football game a few days prior to Christmas and on through Ukrainian Christmas. The loyalty of their alma mater pack the stadiums as fans of every age, follow and support the home team of young players, who compete for school honor and recognition. Only a small percentage of these athletes go on to a professional football career, but all players and alumni carry that pride and recognition of being a part of a successful program. This pride and recognition spurred me to reflect upon the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. In comparison to a college or university, the CJHA is small potatoes, but a host of alumni of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association have become leaders in the production of quality seedstock. Up until a couple of years ago, the Canadian Junior Hereford Association held the largest membership for many decades. Of these past alumni, some have stayed with the Hereford breed; a few married into another breed; while some found other breeds more alluring or pursued other agricultural avenues. 2014 Canadian Western Agribition is a fitting example of leadership by alumni of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. The RBC Supreme Champion Bull, an Angus, was bred and shown by a young man who is alumnus and also judged the Hereford show. The RBC Supreme Champion Female, a Simmental, was bred and exhibited by a young Alberta couple; she is a member of the CJHA alumni. In the Horned Hereford Show, the premier breeder for the last two consecutive years and in the Polled Hereford Show, the premier breeder for the past three consecutive years, both started as members of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. When you consider the above... that these young men and women had many other options in pursuing a living, they choose to make breeding and production of quality seedstock a way of life. The years from BSE up until the past year or two, have required dedication, combined with a vision for the future. The leadership of the seedstock industry is in great hands...thanks to the alumni of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association.

NOT TAKEN FOR GRANTED Semen Testing

Shorty is kinda shy. He’s a real good hand, just kinda shy. He’d get all red if a heifer spent too long lookin’ at him. So….when he started seeing Cathy, we were all pretty surprised. Be damned if they didn’t go off and get married a couple of summers later. Things went pretty good for Shorty, after they got married. He fleshed out quite a bit and most days you couldn’t have taken a smile off his face with a stick. All that changed last spring. It seems Cathy figured it was time to start a family. Shorty tried to sell her on a puppy, but Cathy wasn’t buying. So….Shorty gave up and the two of them set to making babies. Shorty figured they had practised quite a bit, so the rest should be pretty easy. But they tried and tried and Shorty just couldn’t get the job done. Cathy decided that she should get things checked out and so off she went to see Doc Hardy. Shorty came home that night and found Cathy waiting for him. She told him all about the tests and what Doc Hardy had to say and it wasn’t until she sat down that Shorty figured it out. She had already made the appointment. Now Shorty was never much on goin’ to see Doc Hardy, especially not about something like this. If he wasn’t bleedin’ or it wasn’t broke, he just couldn’t see any reason to go in. He was pretty sure it wasn’t broke and he knew he wasn’t bleeding… Shorty was pretty nervous when the nurse stuck him in a little room. Doc Hardy came in, talked a bit, then turned to a desk and handed Shorty a little bottle. She told Shorty that she needed a sample. Now… Shorty checked bulls every spring. He started lookin’ right away for the electric bullet. Doc Hardy smiled at him and told Shorty he could fill the bottle at home if he wanted. Shorty wanted. The next morning Shorty and Cathy figured things out and filled the bottle. Shorty popped the bottle into a brown bag and asked Cathy if she would drop the bottle off at Doc Hardy’s. Cathy declined. Shorty headed for town, the brown bag on the seat beside him. He pulled up to the clinic and headed in with the 26

brown bag. The nurse told him that Doc Hardy was out and wouldn’t be back ‘til noon, but offered to take the bag. Shorty declined. Shorty climbed into the truck and tried to figure things out. He knew that noon was too late and he sure wasn’t real big on filling another bottle. Then it came to him….Doc Kramer. Doc Kramer was a crusty old bugger, but that didn’t matter much at this point. Vets don’t have to have a great bedside manner. Shorty had seen Doc Kramer semen test, he was pretty good. A few minutes later, Shorty was in Kramer’s Clinic. He found Doc Kramer in the back and walked up to him, bag in hand. “Heh Shorty, what can I do for ya? “Heh Doc. I gotta bull I need checked.” “Where?” “Here,” Shorty pulled the bottle from the bag. “Okay….when was he collected?” “’Bout an hour ago.” “Early start huh?” “Yup.” Doc set up a slide and put it under the scope. He stared into the scope for a long time, fiddled with the slide a bit and stared at it some more. Shorty was starting to get pretty nervous. Doc Kramer looked up, and turned to Shorty. “This son of a bitch is no damned good..” “Huh?’ stammered Shorty. “He’s a cull. He’s shooting blanks…no damned good.” “Okay…I got the picture. Are you sure you gotta good slide?” “Yup. His nuts must be too small” Shorty swallowed … hard. “Can I have a look?” “Sure.” Shorty looked into the scope. There was a whole bunch of little circles, some with tails, most without, and only a few were even moving.

“You ain’t gonna get any calves from that useless bastard, Shorty. You might as well ship him. Get yourself a good, young bull for Chrissakes or you’ll never get anything bred.” “Yeah….sure. Thanks Doc.” “No problem Shorty.”

Shorty turned and started for the door. He stopped and turned to Doc Kramer… “Heh Doc!” “Yeah?” “Know where I can get a good puppy?”

Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition, and all major national Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.”

FOUR ET FULL BROTHERS

We were fortunate to get five pregnant recipients from this flush. We were anxious about these calves as we lost 57K at 12 years of age. She had consistently raised our top sale bulls. We were hoping her last offspring would be no different, and we weren’t disappointed. Of the five we were blessed with one female, who is a tank of a heifer we are hoping will take her mothers place. She was awarded Hereford Champion Female at Lloydminster Stockade Roundup as a calf in 2013. Each of her four brothers would stand alone, but together as a set of four they demonstrate a consistency we have come to expect from this line. We invite you to evaluate them for yourselves and decide what they could bring to your operation.

Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.

Considerations When Buying Your Next Bull Borrowing from Harlan Hughes, beef industry economist, the single most important factor influencing the cow-calf producer’s bottom line is the unit cost of production (UCOP). This is determined by dividing the total costs of maintaining the herd by the total pounds of weaned calf produced by that herd. The UCOP is often reported as dollars per 100 weight of calf which then makes it very easy to determine profitability when comparing it with market price. Simply put, producers with the greatest difference between market price and UCOP are the most profitable. Neither the lowest cost nor the highest weaning weight producer are necessarily the most profitable. Since costs are largely determined by the number of cows, and gross income is determined by the pounds of calf sold it is logical that the most important variable influencing the UCOP is pounds of weaned calf per cow exposed to bulls. With market prices the way they are today extra pounds of weaned calf translate into huge profits real quick. More available dollars in the beef cow-calf sector present some exciting opportunities for investment in herd genetics. Improvements in herd productivity through purchased females is very slow - bulls are by far the most effective way to introduce desirable traits into a beef herd. Selecting bulls based only on the need to get the cows pregnant is arguably a survival tactic that wasn’t even defensible when our industry was on its knees. Good bulls were justifiable then and even more so today. You cannot expect your herd to perform any better than the bulls you select. Moving forward and improving on what you already have should be the goal of any business. Don’t miss out on opportunity! The compounding effect of sire selection decisions is amazing. The bulls you turned out last year will contribute half of the genetic material to the calves born this spring. Quite simple really - half from the sire and half from the dam. However, the sire, maternal grandsire and maternal great grandsire together account for nearly 90% (87.5% to be exact) of a calf’s DNA. If the great grand sire was first used in 2010 and produced a crop of heifers that calved as two-year olds in 2013 there will likely be a next generation of heifers calving this spring (heifers giving birth to heifers). Therefore, in most herds a four-generation photo can be possible in as little as 5 years. I don’t think you can run any business on gut feel, intuition, or eyeballing. My mantra is you can’t manage what you don’t measure! Take a look at how your herd has been performing. Are your pregnancy rates, disease rates, length of calving season, proportion of weaned calves and weaning weights what you expect? Are your heifer replacements performing as good as or better than previous generations of heifers? Although many management decisions can influence these parameters your 30

choice of herd sires can have a tremendous affect. Bulls with larger scrotal circumferences produce more sperm, are able to breed more cows and have daughters who reach puberty sooner and have greater lifetime fertility. Science has shown that herds with the highest reproductive performance routinely purchase herd sires with above average scrotal circumferences. More calves born during the first cycle or two of the calving season means more pounds of calf at weaning time. Expected progeny differences (EPDs), genetic (DNA) markers, carcass evaluation data and indexes are other tools that should be used to help select bulls. Weaning weight (WW) is my favourite EPD as it is the most tangible for the cow-calf producer. Two visually identical bulls of the same breed with a 20 pound difference in their WW EPD are expected to produce calves that differ in weaning weight by an average of 20 lbs. The birth weight (BW) EPD should also be considered. Birth weight, WW and yearling weight (YW) are highly positively, correlated. Birth weight is the biggest single predictor of dystocia and more calves are lost at or around birth than at any other time. Remember, a big calf won’t be worth much if it is dead. Bulls with near the top of the breed WW EPDs, but with average or below average birth weight EPDs are becoming more prevalent. The calving easing (CE) EPD should also be examined and remember that EPDs become more accurate as performance data from progeny and other relatives is included in the calculation. Look at breed averages to see how your potential purchase stacks up. Indexes are also useful as they lend credence to the EPD’s – animals with the highest weaning weight and yearling weight EPDs within the herd should have the highest indexes for that trait. A useful exercise for any herd that purchases registered bulls is to look up the current EPDS through the breed association website for bulls that you have used in the past. Check out how they rank in comparison with the breed average for various traits you may be interested in. Because our cattle are improving each year a bull that was superior for a trait 10 years ago may be just average today, but more importantly the EPD information and your herd performance records may help you decide what traits you may want to strengthen. I recently looked up a very influential herd sire that was born 25 years ago and was pleased to see that he still ranked well above breed average for weaning weight, yearling weight and milk. So ... if reducing your Unit Cost of Production and maximizing your profitability interest you then using a few tools to help you select superior herd sires can pay off handsomely. Improving the genetics of your herd through bull purchases is kind of like picking low hanging fruit – lots in the basket for relatively little effort.

T

he saga began after the turn of the century.

Sidney Blair causing him to live in constant pain and confined to a wheel chair, until his passing in 1928. Sandy (Sidney A.) quit school to help on the family farm which he later operated as a partnership with brothers Lindsay and Clayton.

Lindsay and Eileen had three children; two sons, Sidney and Wilson and daughter Joanne. Sidney obtained a Masters Degree in Soil Science, and is involved in the fertilizer and Potash field, while Wilson (Bill) received a degree in Agriculture and returned to the farming industry, producing seed stock Herefords under the name of Bonaventure Farms. Joanne graduated from the University of Saskatchewan, specializing in Home Economics. Sandy and Ida had five children; three sons, Dale, Ronald and Gilbert; two girls, Betty and Heather. Dale attended the University of Saskatchewan and received a Diploma in Agriculture and returned to farming. In 1963, he married Janet Marshall, a nurse from Humboldt, Saskatchewan. They have four children; three sons Scott, Darren, Craig and daughter, Lisa. Graduating high school in Lanigan, Ron attended the University of Saskatchewan and after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, he also returned to the farming operation. In 1965, he married Connie Paproski, a graduate of Saskatoon Business College, born and raised just north of Lanigan. The couple have three children; sons, Kevin, Trevor and daughter, Lana. From the early years and through the 1940’s, the Blair families were strictly farming operations. But in 1948, Blair Brothers, Sandy and Lindsay became interested in the possibility of using fertilizer, and they purchased Elephant brand fertilizer from Cominco; this was the first rail car of bulk fertilizer brought into Saskatchewan. Ron Blair Prior to, the only fertilizer available was bagged. The fertilizer business started 45

on the farm west of Drake, and later moved into town. From 1948 through the early 70’s, it was a seasonal business that revolved around the farm. Either Sandy or son, Ron, would come in the spring or fall and run the business for three to four weeks and then go back to farming. The business later moved to the town of Lanigan, which was centrally located on the Yellowhead highway and operated under the name of S.A. Blair and Sons, with business in Lanigan.

trucking; financial solutions and growing more important each year, agronomic services through its AgIntelligence platform. “We have progressive clients that want a higher level of service on their farm. As farms have gotten larger, it has become a balancing act. It is easier to buy bigger equipment, buy more land and put up more bins, but our growing season is so short and usually crops don’t come out of the ground until the 25th of May and frost usually arrives the first part of September there’s a lot that happens in that time; bugs, worms, fungicide, wind and hail. Therefore, it’s not as easy as putting fuel in equipment and sending a guy on his way; it needs a higher level of management and help from crop recommendations to soil analysis and fertility recommendations. Our agronomists are out in those fields, scouting and looking for anything that could negatively affect that crop, including disease. Bugs are something you can easily see, but disease is something that is hard to see until it’s too late. Costs are high, my grandpa said you only have to make seven out of ten decisions right, the challenge is to decide which three, you are going to be wrong on - you need to mitigate your risk by controlling your misses”, said Kevin.

In the early 1970’s, two major things occurred – Pound-Maker Feedlot and the use of fertilizer were established. The Wildeman family along with the Blair family were instrumental in the foundation of Pound-Maker, Canada’s first integrated feedlot with ethanol. It started at a time when Barley was seventy-eight cents a bushel and no one took it at that price. Kevin states, “Brad Wildeman’s dad was very much a risk taker and a visionary. All Blair family members own shares in Pound-Maker. Dale Blair was president for a number of years; Darren Blair worked there for eight years and now sits on the board of directors.” Secondly, the use of fertilizer, for improving crop yields and pastures, would become commonplace and rapidly expand. The fertilizer business became a full time enterprise. In 1983, Sandy’s sons, Ronald and Dale purchased the fertilizer company and named it Blair’s Fertilizer. The operation moved out of Lanigan to their present location, just minutes east on Yellowhead Highway #16. Due to the success of the endeavour, Ronald took over the fertilizer part of the company, while brother, Dale handled the farming operation, assisting each other during the busy season and when needed. In 2003, Dale’s son Darren and Ron’s son Kevin formed an equal partnership and purchased the enterprise. In the fall of 2014, Blair’s completed a new office complex just south of the main plant facility. From the small beginning of selling fertilizer off the farm west of Drake, Saskatchewan, Blair’s have grown and expanded to seven full service retail locations in Lanigan, Nokomis, Watrous, Liberty, McLean, Lipton and Strongfield with over one hundred employees. Currently, Blair’s are constructing a fertilizer distribution facility in Hanley capable of handling twenty-five thousand metric tonnes, serviced by rail. Under the umbrella of Blair’s Family of Companies, they cover your farming, livestock and yes, you’re wildlife gaming needs. Blair’s Crop and Livestock Solutions make up a large component of the group of companies. Crop and Livestock Solutions supply crop nutrition, seed, crop protection, animal nutrition products and custom services from seeding to harvesting and spraying (both aerial and ground) as well as custom

The Livestock Solutions division also employs nearly a dozen people with three full time nutritionists. The Blair families raised livestock through four generations and with their involvement in Pound-Maker, livestock nutrition was always explored but not in a business aspect. Major companies focused on feedlots, hutterite colonies, dairy barns, hog and poultry operations... producers who used high volumes with low margins. The cow-calf producer was ignored simply because that kind of market was labour intensive. Since those companies did not give cow/calf producers the time of day, improvement in herd nutrition was at a snail’s pace. “So typically, most people would head into the local Co-op to pick up a bag of 1:1 mineral and then hope that the cows wouldn’t eat it, so that they wouldn’t have to buy it next year. We wanted to get into the basics of cow/calf nutrition and by sampling forages and water, try to figure out what they needed and when they needed it. In the 70’s, most operations were feeding Barley and in the 80’s, they were feeding more Barley, but in the 90’s as people moved to more forage based diets, what we forgot was that we had been feeding Barley since the 1960’s and developed all our cowherds around high energy nutrition. When we took grain out of mature cow diets, and moved to more forage based diets, we created the potential for energy and nutrient deficiencies. We knew about the palatability of hay, based on whether it was too mature or whether it got rained on, but nutritive value, we really didn’t know.

Our efforts to work with more cow/calf producers on forage and water sampling increased after working with several herds that In most cases, the movement of produce is equally important as were experiencing high rates of open cows, and even herd losses. production. The historic volume of crop production in western Canada in 2013 created a significant challenge for Blair’s customers in getting their product to market. Seeing the need to provide additional risk management for their ag retail business and for Blair’s customers, Blair’s Family of Companies established a new division called TexCana Logistics. The goal of TexCana is to help Blair’s customers and their ag retail operations in the movement of agricultural products more readily and efficiently through the agricultural supply chain in North America. Cattle producers are a proud breed, no one wanted to admit they were having challenges; however, once we started evaluating the problem, we found that the incidence of “downer cows” most typically occurred in the third trimester, when a cow’s nutrient requirements were the greatest. What we found upon sampling hay and water was in the hay there were excessive amounts of the trace mineral Molybdenum, and in the water high sulfates. Molybdenum in excessive amounts can interfere with a ruminant’s assimilation of Copper, producing Copper deficiency. Ruminants that consume high amounts of Molybdenum developed symptoms such as poor hair coat, poor body score condition, muscle weakness, reduced lactation, and in some cases, diarrhea, stunted growth and anemia. We held a meeting in Nokomis for our area cow/calf producers reporting our findings. The results showed hay samples that were largely Copper deficient, with higher Molybdenum levels and water high in Sulphates. This is significant because high Sulphate water can magnify the impacts of cows consuming a 100% forage based diet with high Molybdenum levels. By the end of the meeting, we had a lineup of producers telling us how many challenges they were having in their own herds with open cows or cow losses. Higher Molybdenum levels typically occur in forages when the water table is high and it can be exacerbated by cool, wet spring conditions. Working with cow/calf producers on this challenge to design solutions that are specific to their herd has given us a level of comfort with cow/calf operators in talking about whole herd nutrition,” said Kevin. As part of their animal nutrition business, Blair’s has also developed a division called Blair’s SportsMaster Pro. Designed for game farm operations outdoorsman and hunters, Blair’s has become a leader in providing integrated wildlife management solutions. Their team of dedicated professionals provide specific nutrition expertise for game farms or sportsmen alike. The product, “Record Rack” is a nutritional supplement designed and proven to attract Big Game while providing a balanced nutrition, maximizing genetic potential, and allows them to thrive in their environment. “Biologics” are scientifically proven Big Game food plots. Forages are exclusively bred to provide precise nutrition for deer and elk, plus being a natural attractant. These annual and perennial forages provide a stand that is harvested year after year by trophy animals in the area. Their products are marketed in outlets throughout western Canada.

The history of Blair Families and purebred cattle goes back to the late 1960’s, Ron and Dale Blair imported purebred Simmentals from Switzerland. All the boys were involved and active in the business; Scott and Kevin were board members of the junior association. They marketed bulls privately off the farm and held an annual female sale each February in Saskatoon, with fellow breeder Cy Udell of Bar U Farms from Viscount, Saskatchewan. In the late 1980’s, the herd turned commercial using the Simmental base with Red Angus. In the fall of 2006, Blairs.Ag Cattle Company was born with the purchase of thirty-five purebred Red Angus cows. Kevin states, “I have always believed that the decisions purebred breeders make around genetic progress to be such a big factor affecting the entire beef supply chain. Commercial producers depend on seed stock producers for their bull purchases and the consumer depends on the commercial cow/calf sector for quality beef. In other livestock production systems, genetic improvement has come quicker due to the use of technology and shorter gestation times. I really felt that if we utilized the tools and technologies available to us as purebred breeders and stayed committed to the path, that we too could accelerate the rate of genetic progress in the Angus breed.” It is difficult to make the commitment required to see genetic improvement through – it takes a lot of people and financial resources to stay the course. I always thought that our experience, belief and love of agriculture, coupled with our vision for where the beef industry needs to go; that we could play a larger part. When we made the commitment, I didn`t know if we`d be in the Angus business for ten or a hundred years, but I wanted our program to make a positive contribution to make it better and we were prepared to invest the resources to make that happen.” Blairs.Ag purchased thirty-five head of Red Angus to start their herd from the Jackson Cattle Company Dispersal, Sedley, Saskatchewan. Over the next eight years, their program expanded to over 450 purebred Red and Black Angus females, 50 purebred Herefords and over 250 commercial females used for embryo recipients. Shortly after the initial purchase, they partnered with Chad Haaland, Hanley, Saskatchewan and Levi Jackson, Sedley, Saskatchewan. Kevin explains, ``Instead of us expanding our facilities, we went to people that were committed to the industry and had facilities. We engaged Chad as manager of the cowherd

In retrospect ... Kevin Blair received his elementary education in Drake, high school in Lanigan and attended the College of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. After university, Kevin returned home. In 1988, he married Noreen Hay, a Maine Anjou girl from Bradwell, Saskatchewan. They have three boys, Bradley, who attended Lindenwood University, St. Charles, Missouri, on a golf scholarship and after completing his Masters degree in Finance is back working for Blair’s Family of Companies. Dustin, attends the University of Saskatchewan, majoring in Economics and Garrett is taking finance at Lindenwood University, on a golf scholarship as well. Kevin is the Past President of the Canadian Angus Association and the founding President of GROW Community of Independents, which is an organization of the eleven largest agriculture retailers in Western Canada. Darren Blair took his grade school in Drake, high school in Lanigan and attended the University of Saskatchewan where he received a degree in Agriculture. After a number of years working in the livestock nutrition business across Western Canada Darren returned home to the family business. He married Deb Maier and they have two children, Tyler, working as a Business Agronomist at Blair’s Family of Companies and Megan attends the College of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. Scott Blair (Darren’s brother) and his family operate a commercial and purebred livestock operation at Drake known as Blairswest and Craig Blair (Darren and Scott ’s younger brother) is part owner of two agriculture retail locations in Lipton and McLean, SK. Recently Craig and his son, Baxter, have gotten into the purebred business, adding to their one hundred and fifty commercial cows. When asked why they opted to be a multi-breed operation, Kevin related, “All of us and our staff believe in the beef industry and all major breeds have merit. Each breed has their strengths and weaknesses, but the commercial industry needs all breeds to be viable and maintain genetic advancement...good cattle are good cattle...it’s a combination of breeds that move the beef industry forward. What I failed to tell you during this discussion is...we implanted twenty-nine embryos and have nineteen Charolais calves coming this spring!” Where are you going from here? “Well, there are two things to being successful - vision and good people. Darren and I are fortunate to have good people, so our challenge is to make sure the vision of where the beef industry should go is where we’re heading, because it is very easy to get off on a tangent. Everyone has their own vision on where the industry should go, the trick is to be right. We believe we need to raise beef cattle in Western Canada that can live with Mother Nature...they need to be loosehided, good boned and haired-up. I tell a lot of my American friends, the reason Canadian cattle are better, and they are better, is that Mother Nature forces us to be better. We need to take our

competitive advantage – the environment, and let it be our ace in the hole. So we select cattle that produce in this environment and market them from Kansas, north. They do get some winter and we know our cattle will adapt and they don’t have to worry about Texas heat. Hybrid vigor comes from variation in a gene pool, for example when they breed Canola; there aren’t two parents the same. We need to understand heterosis and hybrid vigor. The challenge is to analyze your cows and be truthful to yourself of their faults and choose matings that will take you where you need to go. The problem in British breeds, is that we use highly maternal females and breed them to highly maternal sires, then keep the replacements and breed them to calving ease maternal bulls, with the end result being tight-pinned, light-haired, chiselfronted good for nothing cows. The challenge is understanding breeding...understanding heterosis and hybrid vigor...then having the vision and commitment to do it!”

GILMORE, Kurt William March 4, 1949 – Lincoln, Nebraska December 18, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta Kurt Gilmore, beloved husband of Maxine, passed away on December 18, 2014 as a result of cancer, at the age of 65 years. Kurt was born March 4, 1949 in Lincoln, Nebraska to parents Keith and Betty Jo Gilmore. Not long after his birth, his family moved to Callaway, Nebraska to one of the original farms owned by his paternal grandfather and the original home of his father. In his early years, he walked (on good days) with his older brother, Kent to attend the Redfern County School. The family moved to Calgary in June of 1956 so that his father could assume management of The Canadian Hereford Digest. While in junior high school, Kurt developed an interest in competitive swimming and by the time he finished high school was a nationally rated competitor. Kurt was offered an athletic scholarship at Washington State University and entered there in the fall of 1967, majoring in animal science. After one year, he decided to work for the university farm and moved to and managed their beef production test facility for three years. Between college terms, he worked two summers on the Budd Hereford Ranch in Wyoming and his future in the registered Hereford business was assured. Following graduation in 1971, he joined the field staff of The Canadian Hereford Digest, and visited breeders throughout Alberta and British Columbia. In 1980, he purchased the publication from his father. Following the death of his father in 1987, Kurt took a keen interest in the promotion and success of the Keith Gilmore Foundation which provides agricultural scholarships to worthy young farm students from throughout Canada. He served as its chief fundraiser for many years and was elected as a trustee in 2009. In 1998, he met Maxine Williams, the love of his life, which led to their marriage on June 28, 2002. They lived for five years at their acreage north of Cochrane and then moved to Calgary in the fall of 2003. They spent many wonderful and happy years together, often travelling on vacation as well as business. Kurt and Maxine loved all of their grandchildren and attended their sporting events and competitions, Christmas concerts and many family and holiday get-togethers. Those were special times when any of the grandchildren came for a “sleepover” with “Gramma” and “Poppa.” Kurt enjoyed good food and loved to cook. Maxine and Kurt loved hosting dinner parties for family and friends at their home on a regular basis. One of the highlights of springtime was always his annual fishing trip with close friends in search of Walleye at lakes in northern Saskatchewan. As official camp cook, his co-fishermen never lacked for prime rib, crab or steak with all the fixings. Kurt was honoured for his long time service to the Calgary Bull sale by the Alberta Cattle Breeders in 2009 and was inducted to the Alberta Hereford Association Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2013, he was admitted as a member to the Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll. Following the sale of The Canadian Hereford Digest to The Canadian Hereford Association in 2009, Kurt took on a new career in real estate sales with CIR Realty and worked closely with his friend of over forty years, Perry Wilkes.

Kurt is survived by his loving wife, Maxine; three children, Julie (Chad) Smith, Jeanie (Mike) Colling, and Kevin (Catherine) Gilmore; stepson, Kevin (Carrie) Williams; brothers, Kent and Karl (Alyda); sister, Karen (Norris) Graham; seven grandchildren Evan, Easten, Kaden, Avree, Sydney, Kylie and Chase; nephews and nieces Tom (Melissa) Graham, Marianne (Jeff) Shigematsu, Steven (Chelsey) Gilmore, Nicole Gilmore, and Christy (Clark) Camp. Kurt was predeceased by his parents, Keith and Betty Jo Gilmore and by his first wife, Virginia Gilmore. Funeral Services will be held at Bow Valley Baptist Church (54 West Aarsby Road, Cochrane, AB) on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. It was Kurt’s special request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Keith Gilmore Foundation Scholarship Fund, 5160 Skyline Way NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 6V1, www.keithgilmorefoundation.com. In living memory of Kurt Gilmore, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park. - See more at: http://www. legacy.com/obituaries/calgaryherald/obituary.aspx?n=kurt-gilmore&pid=173523131#sthash.HpuRpGWG.eNXsu1lg. dpuf

Cryptosporidiosis Diarrhea & Its Detection & Treatment By Roy Lewis DVM

The incidence of “crypto” diarrhea is most definitely higher on dairy farms where calves are raised in close confinement and the wet moist environment is conducive to the transmission of these protozoa. We as large animal veterinarians are detecting it more often in our beef herds in the western provinces. “Crypto” is a protozoa with a very similar life cycle to coccidia which is probably much more familiar to Canadian cattlemen. The detection can at times be difficult to establish but with newer tests and other methods I will describe look for it and you may find it even in well-managed cattle operations. Dairymen watch for it diligently and you as beef producers discuss it with your veterinarian and be especially vigilant if scours crops up in older calves that seem unresponsive to traditional scour treatments. Bringing in dairy calves to be adopted onto beef cows can be a source of infection. I always suggest just use calves from your own herd if possible. Crypto usually is caused by the species C. Parvum in cattle and it is also zoonotic meaning it is transmissible to humans so watch handling diarrheic calves as a general rule and wash boots, hands etc. Be extra vigilant cleaning and disinfecting the area calves have been in. Most human cases result from exposure to sick calves such as producers, farm dairy workers, veterinary students etc. As with all zoonotic diseases people under stress or immunosuppressed are highly susceptible. Make sure especially after dealing with diarrheic calves to clean boots and coveralls and wash your hands thoroughly. Treat the diarrheic calves last to avoid yourself carrying the oocysts (eggs) between calves. The organism is very similar to coccidia in the sense oocysts (eggs) are passed in the manure in very large numbers (up to 10 million per gram of manure). Oocysts are ingested by the calf and in completing the life cycle cause damage to the large intestine and the end of the small intestine. We see it primarily in calves anywhere from three to 30 days of age. The clue is calves seem unresponsive to treatment and the diarrhea is generally yellow and sort of foamy. The organism destroys the inner lining of the intestine so the milk comes through essentially undigested and calves dehydrate. Keep in mind half the time crypto is involved in mixed infections with the other scour organisms so you may be dealing with essentially two diseases at the same time. That is why one must use all the preventative steps in your power to avoid a scours outbreak. All the tools we have talked about in other articles such as new calving area, lots of room and bedding, good nutrition of the dam leading to high quality colostrum all help in prevention. Make sure the calves are up and sucking within a couple hours and if in doubt supplement with home stored frozen colostrum or the good colostrum substitutes such as headstart. Scours vaccinate your cows and heifers but keep in mind the good scours vaccines cover the most common causes of viral and bacterial scours in calves but not the protozoan (coccidia & cryptosporidiosis) causes. One of the real issues in the past has always been the initial diagnosis. Veterinarians in investigating scours outbreaks have often suspected crypto was involved but it was hard to prove. There are several ways to prove its existence. Fecals can be done and the labs are

62

getting better at spotting it but it like coccidia has very small oocysts much smaller than worm eggs so they can be hard to see even with a microscope. Now there is a check done with a strip inserted into the manure called “entericheck ” by Biovet Labs, which is a fairly sensitive and specific check. We learned from a recent veterinary student from Calgary (now Dr. Dayna Goldsmith UCVM 2013) attending our clinic on a rotation that “Crypto” is what they call an acid-fast organism. This means it takes up acid-fast stain so another test the vet clinic can do is smear a sample of the manure on a microscope slide stain it and like magic the oocysts become very visible when they take up the stain. This worked very well at our clinic and then you can be very confident of the diagnosis. The combination of all these three methods has greatly improved the diagnostic rate of crypto. Veterinary clinics can order the acid-fast stain. The next real issue with crypto has been the treatment or should I say lack of treatment options. The standard treatments such as electrolytes are always warranted. Vets would prescribe sulfa drugs similar to coccidiosis treatment but the best way is to cut down the number of organisms being excreted. Merck animal health a pharmaceutical company has in the last two years got a product called “Halocur” licensed for this very thing. It was being used in Canada for a few years under an experimental drug release so it has a successful tract record. In outbreaks or after a first case is diagnosed calves in subsequent calvings are put on it for seven days in a row. It controls the crypto by breaking the life cycle and substantially reducing the number of oocysts produced which then could reinfect the calf or other calves. Halocur is an oral product and given at 2cc per 10kg daily. A real important point here is to dose it carefully as unlike most products the safety margin is quite low. Twice the dose and you could get depressed calves, blood in the diarrhea and other signs very similar to the disease itself so don’t give more medication if those signs show up. Also at four times the dose can be fatal. Always treat the calves on a full stomache and don’t start treatment if they are already feeling sick. Isolation of sick calves and a good cleaning, washing and disinfection of the isolation is necessary as well. The oocysts are very resistant and are killed by high temperatures. The key is keeping the oocysts numbers down and with age resistance develops which is why you never see this disease in older cattle. There are other coccidiostats, which have been tried against cryptosporidiosis on an experimental basis with some success , and in fact Halocur was developed as a coccidiostat for chickens. Make sure with any unusal appearing diarrhea with the frothy content appearing like undigested milk that your veterinarian rules out cryptosporidiosis because the treatment is much different than the other neonatal diarrheas. From diagnosis preventative measures and treatment measures can be utilized as well as breaking the cycle with Halocur medication or other coccidiostats. Your local veterinarian would be best to help diagnose Crypto and give you the treatment options most likely to be successful in your operation. Here’s hoping a Crypto free calving season.

2014 turned out to be an amazing year, actually a record year in the beef cattle industry. Far beyond what many of us were predicting, even those much smarter than me or even Ted! With live cattle prices significantly higher, in some cases double what the same cattle sold for just a year prior. Many producers found themselves dealing with a problem they have not even thought about in more than a decade‌tax. Finally a problem This is a great time to start succession planning; you can deal with! you can now have some confidence in wanting your kids to take over the operation, believing Still many producers are holding their that they can make a decent life for themselves. breath wondering how long higher prices and Succession planning is not quick or easy and profits will last. There are a lot of farmers and usually takes some professional assistance, but a ranchers that feel this is a dream and are skeptical solid plan is needed to transition your operation to let themselves believe it has come true. I’m a for it to be successful for both yourself and your believer that it is true and it is based on shear children. Agriculture is big business and we must supply and demand, not politics or stock traders treat it as so to remain successful. falsely affecting a market, demand remains strong and supplies are low and tough to build. The In the short term planning and very near USDA recently released projections for the next future, this year’s herd sire selections must be ten years to the year 2024. They predict; farm made. Actually this falls under both short and prices for beef cattle will rise from an average of long term planning because if you retain females, $1.5252 a pound in 2014 to $1.5754 a pound in your herd sire selection will impact your program 2015 to a high of $1.63 a pound by 2017, before for generations; so you want to make educated dropping back to $1.5617 by 2024. The price selections. This issue is packed full of reputable follows the size of the beef herd, which the USDA operations, offering you many options, genetic predicts will still drop in 2015 before starting to variation and management variation for you to rebuild thereafter. Our numbers here in Canada select your bulls from. The good bulls are going have followed and will continue to closely follow to cost more this spring, not because there is those of the US. a shortage of bulls but because there is more profit in the industry, allowing more producers So breathe, and make plans for the future to bid harder and farther on the top bulls. based on a new reality in the cattle business, both short term and long term. Short term plans See you on the bull sale run! are those that involve much needed equipment updates, etc. and heaven forbid, maybe even a well deserved and long overdue family vacation, which is not a weekend branding or trip to a cattle sale. The long term plan involves updating infrastructure, expanding the ranch and cow herd. 70
