he phone call finally came through. Craig Jackson had agreed to grace the cover of our annual “Execs & Their Rides” issue! And he was bringing two of his super-hero automotive friends with him: the ‘Cuda and the Hornet. This was going to be foolproof! Right?? If you need to turn back to the cover to check whether the young lady lounging on the Mercedes is indeed the patriarch of Barrett-Jackson, let me save you some time. She ain’t. There we were—the photographer, Craig (who has the uncanny ability to glower and grin simultaneously), a nervous editor, and the drivers who’d delivered these muscular stars of the upcoming auction. And all of us kept glancing up at a single black cloud scudding playfully over the parking lot of Barrett-Jackson’s Airpark headquarters. The photog squeezed out a quick six shots to check the lighting and composition. The cloud exhaled four mini-drops onto my forearm. I prayed for a millisecond that a passing bird was just relieving itself. Three more drops fell, welcome as acid. “Bring ‘em in!” Craig roared and beckoned hugely to his peeps, who sprang into action and whisked the muscle cars to a safe, covered haven. It’s not like I blame him. Those two vehicles are worth millions. Of dollars. Each. You can check them out on page 18. Lucky for me, Craig had recommended I contact his friend and customer Addison Brown to be included in our feature. None of us knew at the time she would end up front and center, but the fact is, we didn’t get our cover shot of Craig … and even he can’t deny that this particular cloud had a silvery red lining.

From dealerships and detailers to race shops and restorers, the Scottsdale Airpark harbors a vibrant aut omotive industry—much of it symbiotic to the Barrett-Jackson Collec tor Car Auction, a WestWorld fixture since 1989. You could say motor vehicles are one of the Airpark’s defining characteristics. By the same token, we believe the “chariot” each of us chooses to navigate the world reveals a little something about our business and life-wo rk philosophies. We asked six successful area execs about what the y drive, and what drives them.

Craig Jackson Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. 7400 E. Monte Cristo Ave., Scottsdale

E

stablished in 1971, Barrett-Jackson provides products and services to classic and collector car owners and automotive enthusiasts around the world. The company produces “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions” in Scottsdale, Las Vegas, Palm Beach,

Fla., and Orange County, Calif. More than 270,000 people attended the last Scottsdale event, which recorded more than $92 million in sales. Barrett-Jackson has also raised over $8.7 million for national and local charities through its auctions. Mark your calendar for the next Scottsdale auction: Jan. 13-20, under the iconic white tent at WestWorld.

Clark Gable’s 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe will be offered at the BarrettJackson 2013 Scottsdale auction. The star is said to have cherished the coupe for the five years before his death in 1960.

Do you own these cars or are they simply auction items? I own the Hornet and the other I own the clone to it—I have the ’70 version of the ’71 ’Cuda that’s painted purple, or what we call “Plum Crazy.” At what point do you stop taking them out for a casual spin? Once they’re in the $2 million to $5 million range, they’re just too valuable. I still drive mine, but just to exercise them. I have plenty of modern cars to drive. I drive the Bugatti Veyron all the time. It’s the world’s fastest production car—it does 253. We saw you parking The Green Hornet at the Scottsdale Polo Championship. Do you have the same enthusiasm for horses that you have for horsepower? I like stuff I can thrust the throttle on and it’s really responsive. I jet ski at a million miles an hour. I just like stuff that goes fast. But if you are going to do an equestrian event, polo is probably the funnest one. They do get after it. My daughter is an equestrian. Does living and breathing cars 24/7 ever get old? I never lose that passion for cars. I can’t read books anymore. I like everything that’s fast. I like fast cars, fast boats. I’m an adrenaline junkie; I love the style of the cars; the uniqueness. Even in modern cars, I won’t drive just a cookie cutter. Typically I like driving something unique; so do my customers. I live the same lifestyle as my clientele, and that’s why we’re successful. We’re not just auctioneers. This business was started by car people for car people.

What would you say to Airparkers who still haven’t experienced the Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson Auction? I get told all the time by people who come for the first time—usually they get drug there by somebody who is a car fanatic—they can’t believe it’s so much more than a car auction; it’s a lifestyle experience. First of all, the sheer size of it is awesome—the tent in the main auction arena seats 12,000 people. You get that many people energized with that velocity of money, and adrenaline is in the room. But it’s fun for the whole family. I start off with family-value day, and then there are all the different parties, and the fashion shows on the property, the shopping tours. It really is about celebrating the better things in life. People fly in from all over the world to go to Barrett-Jackson. For people who live here locally, they should take advantage of it. How does the auction impact the city in general? The sporting event at BarrettJackson is spending money, and that’s great for the city of Scottsdale. The people who come spend a lot of money outside of the event. I have all sorts of customers that buy all sorts of businesses. I only find out about it later. They love coming to Scottsdale and the lifestyle of Scottsdale. Which part of the event do you enjoy most? Running the actual auctions is my favorite part. It’s a rush being up there on the block. We’re firing on all cylinders.

We’re live on TV. Last year I probably collapsed for a week afterward. I was done. You stay on for 10 days, and by the time it’s over, you are just done. When you moved your offices from downtown Scottsdale five years ago, why the Airpark? We’d outgrown our showroom on Scottsdale Road, and the Airpark is very convenient to WestWorld. I own a piece of

land out by WestWorld, and that’s where I’ll ultimately build our permanent corporate headquarters, which at a minimum will be a headquarters and showroom combined. Bob “Go Daddy” Parsons is also a selfconfessed speed junkie, and he’s right down the street. Do you guys hang out? No, but I’d love to have him come to the auction this year. He’s bought up all the motorcycle dealerships. [laughs]

hen we caught up with long-time Scottsdale banker and Airpark resident Michele Greenberg, she was still sporting a few scratches from the grueling gladiator marathon she’d tackled over the weekend. wryly notes, it’s a mixed blessing the Texasbased institution’s squeaky-clean record doesn’t make headlines. Comerica now has 18 Valley locales, with plans for further Arizona expansion next year. How does the 2009 Malibu compare to your first ride? My first car was a 1986 Chevy S10, brand new. I got it for my 16th birthday. I had that truck for 10 years, and still miss it. This is a little more practical. It’s a Chevy—I’ve always driven Chevys—it’s very comfortable and gets good gas mileage. How did you get into banking as a career? In 1989, my mom knew a banker in Yuma who needed a reliable person, and she introduced me. I got the job, and that just snowballed into 24 years later. What inspires you to excel? My mother. She is amazing. She can do it all with a smile on her face and never complain. She helps everybody, talks to everybody, knows everybody. I am the way I am because of her. She inspires me to be the best that I can possibly be. She’s an artist, now retired, and still teaches painting to the winter visitors in Yuma. You’ve begun hosting mixers at Comerica’s Airpark branch this year. What’s the philosophy behind the events? I think a lot of people don’t realize what comprises the Airpark—that there is everything here, from law firms to IT to manufacturing, child care and restaurants. In a 5-mile radius you can get everything you need—this is your target market— and I want more people to know that. How are the mixers structured? We partner with our clients. Our last

one, “Get Fit with Slim & Fit,” was just open networking, and everybody brought canned goods to donate to Vista del Camino Food Bank. Because I know everyone I invite, I do the introductions and then leave people to start talking. We don’t even talk about the bank. I’ve also organized two “Appy Hours.” What are Appy Hours? I actually trademarked the name. They’re educational networking events for people with iPhones, Androids, laptops. We talk about which apps are good to use for your business. We did the first one at Zulu Caffé at the Scottsdale Airport and had 85 people. Everybody put cards in a basket, and we asked them what is your favorite app. Dropbox and Evernote were top picks. If anybody wants information on the next Appy Hour, by the way, they can email me at mgreenberg@comerica.com.

What do you love about your work? I love that I get to help people, because we are a hybrid of a big bank and a community bank. We’re not just a place to deposit your money. We go out of our way to get involved in the community and connect our customers with people they can do business with and trust. We have built that reputation. What would you like Airparkers to know about Comerica Bank? Our decision makers are local. Whether it’s a yes or a no answer, it’s going to come locally. With the “big boys,” you are never talking to a decision maker, and I think people today want more from their bank. They want advice; they want to know should they short sale, should they file bankruptcy. And we try to be more than just a bank. As our tagline says, “We’re a Main Street Bank. Not a Wall Street bank.”

he first company to bring handheld GPS into golf, GolfLogix is headed by Scott Lambrecht, a Seattle native who graduated from Arizona State and hasn’t left. With more downloads than any other golf app, GolfLogix has nearly 2 million members enjoying its platform. In 2009, smartphone technology led GolfLogix to develop and capture the app market with a program providing precise GPS distances. Within weeks, the app was listed in the top10 most requested sports applications in the iTunes Store. Tell us about the 1965 Cadillac Coup de Ville. This was my first Cadillac ever. I got it from a widow in Sun City about 10 years ago with 18,000 original miles. That fueled the passion, and now I have four classic Cadillacs: a 1941 Fastback, a 1970 triplewhite convertible, and a 1959 flat-top— that’s the crazy one with the biggest fins ever made on a car.

What is your everyday ride? This is what I drive every day—I rotate them. The beauty is I live in Pinnacle Peak, so the commute is seven minutes and I’m not putting a lot of miles on them. How do you explain your Caddy fever? I think they are from an era where America was at its greatest in a lot of ways. A lot of people like muscle cars, but the Cadillac has the creature comforts. Even my ’65 coup has A/C and power windows. Now we know what you drive. What drives you? As far as our business goes, I’m really passionate about helping the masses play better golf. I think golf is a difficult sport and has been through some rough times, and anything we can do with technology to make people enjoy it more is great. What were some 2012 highlights for GolfLogix?

24 | Scottsdale Airpark News November 2012

Scott Lambrecht Founder/CEO GolfLogix 15685 N. Greenway-Hayden Loop Scottsdale

We launched a big partnership with Golf Digest: At the end of every round you play with our app, you get a free, personalized magazine with the content you need based on how well you played. What’s on the horizon? The mantra for GolfLogix in 2013 is “Easy, fast and fun.” So many apps these days have made things too difficult for users, which is why we’re almost reversing some of our technology—we’re making buttons bigger and fonts bigger, and making everything easier and more fun. We have 2 million members, but there are almost 50 million players around the world, and many of them play just for fun. I want to cater to them as well.

Tell us more about the G8. What are your target markets? Those in private security and executive protection—usually for high net-worth people or families that need an extra layer of personal protection at home or while traveling. How is the G8 a more “defensive” device than, say, a stungun? This product is really intended for people who simply want to defend themselves and not necessarily cause injury to the other party. As an example, when we work with women and we ask about personal safety, they typically tell us, Paul Hughes “I don’t want to hurt the Chief of Operations, Sales other guy. I just want them Guardian 8 Corp. to go away.” And that is the 15230 N. 75th St., same response we get from Scottsdale personal security. They are not there to arrest anyone. At its core, this product is pepper spray, but around that, we’ve added electronic features. The [laser spotter, strobe light and sonic sounder] are there to give ample warning before having to take action.

think about it. Just protect yourself, and the unit will take care of the other things you should be doing.

What about the G8’s recording capability? That is about protecting the operator’s integrity. In the private security space, it is vital to be able to document what happened. Also the more accurately you can describe what takes place out there and can present it to other parties involved, the further it compels people who are stirring up trouble to leave the area.

Where does your own drive to succeed come from? I think it’s just something that was ingrained in me from my Marine boot camp days. Whenever someone tells me that “I can’t,” that’s a pretty good kick in the pants to go out there and do it.

These are serious multitasking devices! Does the G8 do anything else? Our product pairs with your cell phone: When you use it, you’re already calling for help. You don’t have to consciously

How is the product being received by prospective customers? Very strongly. We’ve done three major industry trade shows, and we’ve garnered over 700 people who are asking to test it [as a precursor to buying]. We’ve spoken with corporate clients for Disney, Lockheed Martin—huge names. How do you like being back in Scottsdale? It’s fantastic! We really are thankful that the city of Scottsdale helps us on a number of levels—making contacts, finding this office location. We really enjoy the vibrancy of the Airpark area. In fact, the proximity to the airfield was one of the top-5 reasons we chose this location. Even though we don’t fly aircraft, we wanted to be near people who are active, who are doing things. It’s important to the mentality of the company.

What can we expect from Guardian 8 in the coming year? We’re launching our product in the first quarter of next year. Also we’ll be reaching deeper into the community’s talent pool for engineering, design and marketing help. We’ll not only be reaching further into Scottsdale’s consulting base, but we’ll be hiring here as well.

r. Daniel Shapiro has been practicing cosmetic surgery in the Scottsdale and Paradise Valley area for more than 19 years. A past president of the Maricopa County Society of Plastic Surgeons, Shapiro is the recipient of many awards. including Phoenix Magazine’s “Top Docs” Award, and is a popular source for local media. He also lectures for manufacturers of advanced techniques and equipment such as Zeltiq Coolsculpting and Ulthera. The doctor’s practice is based in Paradise Valley at the Shapiro Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Dr. Daniel Shapiro and Skin Klinic, but recently he’s develNorth Scottsdale Dermatology oped a partnership with North Scottsdale (Partnership) Dermatology. 14275 N. 87th St., Scottsdale What drew you to the Bentley? I’ve had pretty much all the different sports car—Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis. But my wife gave me the two-kid rule, and now I have to be able to travel with my 8 year old and 11 year old in the back. I really like the Bentley and the attention to detail. It’s not especially flashy, but it’s got great performance so it’s not a boring car. It’s stylish and understated. 2012 Bentley Continental GT How does it compare to your first car? Photo by Adam Moreno My very first car in high school was a Datsun truck, so I think it’s a little bit more stylish. Through the years, I think my biggest problem is keeping the cars. I kind of lose interest rapidly, but that’s gotten better over time. What drives you to go above and beyond? I think for me, it’s investigating the newest proven technologies and using them to exceed people’s expectations. That’s what really gets me. I try to be a leader in the field. In a town crowded with cosmetic surgeons, what does it take to rise above the competition? It’s all about the results. Plastic surgery is like a bell-shaped curve—it’s like high school. There are all the people in the middle and then there are the people at the top. It sounds arrogant, but it’s the truth. But delivering each and every day, that’s how you stay on top. Tell us about your partnership with North Scottsdale Dermatology. We’re combining our areas of expertise, and we’re very excited. It’s an interesting business plan. I see so many patients that have signs of aging, and it’s not always a surgical thing ... You see these kinds of combined practices a lot more in other big cities, not so much in Phoenix, so this is a new model for the area. What are some of the most exciting cosmetic procedures these days to watch for? I do so much facial work—lot of face lifts and rhinoplasties— but I also do some special noninvasive treatments, one of which is VASER Hi-Def liposelection, which directs ultrasonic waves of energy through unwanted fat to remove it. I am the only person in Arizona that does this procedure. We also provide some noninvasive treatments for facial aging. Ultherapy, for example, uses ultrasound to tighten skin and deep layers of the face.

ddison Brown’s passion for cars started with her drag-racing father. He taught her to identify a car by the engine, to drive a stick, and to watch the Speed channel religiously. After earning her degree from Arizona State, she jumped into the world of classic automobiles. Married to another car enthusiast—Scottsdale commercial real estate broker and entrepreneur Walt Brown Jr.—Addison now heads up Brown’s Classic Autos, offering an array of services in auto sales, consignment, inspection and marketing.

about it. If I were a car, this would be me. It has everything I want in one car. It’s got a vintage look—it started as a German military vehicle—twin turbo engines, a rare bright bold color, and still has the off-road suspension and differential. I can take it off-roading, and I can fit the kids in it. [10-month-old Cooper, and stepson 13-year-old Wally]

What made you fall in love with this vehicle? It has 615 horsepower, 675 pounds of torque, and is special ordered in factory red. It’s one of one. I just love everything

What’s the history of Brown’s Classic Autos? We’ve been open for over a year, but I started dabbling about four years ago. It was just was kind of a hobby, turning

some cars and making some money and having a lot of fun. We decided to get serious about it. We’ve worked really hard, and it’s gone really well. My husband’s father had a used car lot in Albuquerque, so he’s got a nose for the right buys. Where do you find your inventory? I look all across the country, and what I’m looking for is not just a classic car but a unique, special, rare car. Sometimes I’ll find a rare one that’s just a rust bucket, and that’s a more fun job than just freshening up a vehicle that the seller has already put a lot of time and money into. Do you do the refurbishment in-house? I have a bunch of different contractors. For the most part, all of the mechanical, electrical work I do in-house, and I bring

the contractors in so I can supervise the work being done. I have a whole mechanic area built out. The paint and bodywork has to go to a body shop. My detailer is in the Airpark. Tell us about your pending move to Acoma Drive. We outgrew our space over by Go Daddy, and this building came up for sale. It couldn’t have been more perfect— it used to be The Stables, a car storage company. It’s finished exactly the way I need it to be. I’m hoping we’ll be in there by January. What is your involvement with the Barrett-Jackson auctions? I am a customer and a client, so I sell and buy. I started out mostly with my

husband buying. Before I met him, he was a VIP at Barrett-Jackson and bought a lot of cars. I loved the auction but didn’t have any money, so I was a volunteer usher. You do what you have to do, right? [laughs] Now I’m sitting there in VIP hoping nobody recognizes me. Anyway, Barrett-Jackson does an outstanding job of getting you the value of your car. They attract a really big buyers’ pool. And every now and then, you hit a jackpot, and two people in the room really love the car, they both want it, and they’ve had some drinks—and you set a record. And you’ve had that experience? At the Vegas auction, I sold a 1970 Shelby GT 500 Coupe for $220,000, which was a world record for that specific make and model. It was my first auction. I had my 10 month old with me, and I think he was my lucky charm. What is it like being a woman in the automotive world? It’s definitely a male-dominated industry. Women tend to stray away from heavy machinery, especially the muscle

cars and hot rods I’m dealing with. It’s hard for women to be respected—what I do personally is I try to balance making sure I know enough about the car and at the same time don’t offend a man who thinks he knows a lot—so I ask a lot of questions even if I know the answers. There are a lot of personalities involved, a lot of ego, and it takes a really strong person to be successful in this industry. I try to make [being a woman] work to my advantage. They want to tell me about the cars; they enjoy it. Do you race? Anything and everything. Offroad, track, I will jump at anything with wheels. What drives you to excel? My family, my sons. It’s important for me to set a good example that mom and dad get up in the morning, go to work, and work really had. We have a lot of fun, but they see we don’t have fun for no reason. I include my boys in everything. I take them everywhere. On weekends, we go to car shows, to look at cars, to the interior shop, and they love it.

t’s November, the start of the two-month season of holidays known for libations and celebrations, enjoyed in homes, at office parties and most particularly the city’s hundreds of bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants. Imbibers and teetotalers alike may find Scottsdale’s history with the drink a bumpy ride (by a designated driver, of course). Scottsdale was originally settled by a Baptist minister and others who opposed the sale or consumption of alcohol. It was their collective desire that Scottsdale remain a “dry” town, and they voted for prohibition long before the rest of the territory/state or nation did. The Arizona Territory’s Anti-Saloon League was founded here circa 1897, and many temperance events were held in Scottsdale during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Townsfolk celebrated with lemonade and tea; liquor was not openly available until after Prohibition was repealed in 1932. Rumor has it, however, that moonshiners found ample hiding places for their stills in the vast areas of undeveloped desert and mountain ranges surrounding Scottsdale, particularly on the road toward Payson. As an unincorporated settlement until 1951, records of liquor licenses granted are hard to come by, but the Arizona State Business Directory of 1936 lists Hamer’s Café on Main Street, operated by Ralph Hamer, as a restaurant with liquor. The Scottsdale Tavern also began operating in the late 1930s, located south of the townsite on the northeast corner of Scottsdale and Thomas roads.

Sometime in the 1940s, what had been the Kubelsky’s Boston Store became the Saguaro Tavern, which then became the celebrated Lulu Belle when Bobby and Evelyn Foehl took it over circa 1954. After more than four decades as a dry town, followed by the Depression and World War II years when a handful of cafes and taverns served beer and booze, Scottsdale’s post-war population and tourism boom created a thirst for bars, drinks with dinner and stores selling alcohol by the can and bottle.

Here are a few sips of Scottsdale’s swizzling history:  Elizabeth Arden opened the Maine Chance resort spa exclusively for women on the southern slopes of Camelback Mountain in 1946. Rich and famous ladies (First Ladies, movie stars, celebrities) enjoyed pampering, gentle exercise and healthy dining on “spa cuisine.” Some came to “dry out” from a lifestyle of too many nights on the cocktail circuit. The resort closed in the 1990s.  Ping Bell and Claudia Ogden opened a bar and restaurant on the northeast corner of Main Street and Scottsdale Road in the late 1940s, calling it Ping Bell’s. Local artist Lew Davis designed a logo for the bar, a pink-hued pony. Charlie Briley worked there, bought the bar from the owners, and renamed it the Pink Pony. It became the community-gathering place, where many deals were sealed (including the 1955-era notion to build a stadium and host a Safari Resort’s French Quarter Bar

Anderson went on to open Dale Anderson’s on Marshall Way, as well as The Other Place and The Quilted Bear on Lincoln Road—all known as great places to eat and meet.  The town’s first bank opened on Main Street in the early 1920s and closed during the Great Depression in 1933. The building was recycled into the Rusty Spur Saloon in the 1950s, using the former bank’s vault to store its liquor. It is on

Scottsdale’s historic register and has been a popular post-ride watering hole for the Hashknife Pony Express and Parada Del Sol riders.  Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Scottsdale restaurateurs who offered a “saloon” capitalized on the West’s Most Western Town theme. Pinnacle Peak Patio and Reata Pass opened in the far desert north of Scottsdale in 1957 and 1958 and still serve us today. The Red Dog Saloon

opened on Scottsdale Road in the late 1950s, complete with a larger-than-life nude portrait of Rosie above the bar. We also had the Crystal Pistol and Handlebar J’s (still open, and originally Wild Bill’s) at Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard, and Rawhide’s Golden Belle Saloon, just to name a few.  Trader Vic’s opened on Fifth Avenue in 1962, ushering in the “tiki” era for Scottsdale. Many home-grown baby boomers remember taking their prom dates there, celebrating engagements and bringing important clients to toast with Polynesian-themed drinks served in decorated ceramics.  As resorts became more luxurious during the 1950s and 1960s, most featured nightclubs with live entertainment and ballroom dancing. Paul Shank’s French Quarter was among the best, but the Hotel Valley Ho, Executive House Arizonian (now Firesky), Mountain Shadows, Carefree Inn and others offered a varied nightlife.  Los Olivos and the Corral family have been serving margaritas (perhaps the

During the Phoenix Open, golf fans flock to the Birds Nest, probably the most popular temporary nightclub in the country.  Sumptuous champagne brunches were all the rage in the 1970s and ’80s, most popularly hosted by Monk’s Garden on Camelback, Del Webb’s Mountain Shadows, the Chaparral Room at Camelback Inn, Palm Court at Scottsdale Conference Resort, Chez Louis on Scottsdale Mall, and the Hyatt Gainey Ranch’s Golden Swan.  Among the first restaurants to open in the Scottsdale Airpark was the Hungry Tiger on Butherus Road. It later became the Dallas House, which had a permit to offer off-track betting. When Bill and Ann Arthur opened the Thunderbird Suites at the Scottsdale Airport in 1985, Bill decorated the Silver Wings bar with his lifetime collection of Air Force and aircraft memorabilia.  Folk-singing cafes and Country-Western nightclubs rose in popularity in the 1960s and ’70s. We had the Tuba City Truck Stop (Dolan Ellis); Wild Bill Moses (Waylon Jennings), which still operates as Handlebar J’s on Shea; Jed Nolan’s Music Hall on Civic Center Mall and others. Arizona’s Official Historian Marshall Trimble performed with folk group Gin Mill Three at the Cross Keys during the early 1960s.  When voters passed the Smoke-free Arizona Act in November 2006, smoking was banned within restaurants and bars (and public places) throughout the state, and the majority (particularly bartenders and wait staff) breathed in relief.  Many of us have our favorite “Cheers”-style bar, where everyone knows our name, but long-time Scottsdalians have had to say goodbye to many of their favorites: Beeline Tavern, Enrico’s, the Bird Cage, Chris Carson’s Black Angus, Fireside Inn, the Old Corral, Green Gables in Phoenix, Pischke’s Paradise, BB Singer’s, the Playboy Club on Central in Phoenix, Reuben’s near Scottsdale Fashion Square, the Black Sheep, J. Chew’s, Joe Hunt’s, Anderson’s Fifth Estate, Der Steiner, the Jungle Room at Casa Blanca Inn, The Saguaro Restaurant, the 19th Hole BBQ on Shea, the Black Rose, The Outpost (and Mimi, the songstress), Oaxaca on Pinnacle Peak Road and many more. The music ends, and the young man who just purchased a Harley-Davidson motorcycle swings the stick. A loud crash of mallet meeting metal echoes through the building. Not your typical motor vehicle purchase. But the new Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale at 15600 N. Hayden Road isn’t your typical dealership. Owner Bob Parsons, the founder of web domain company Go Daddy, is known for his overthe-top parties, philanthropy and customer service. He’s living up to that reputation at his latest business ventures that include neighboring GO AZ Motorcycles. Parson’s “1st Annual Bob’s Biker Blast” on Oct. 20 celebrated his purchase of the Harley dealership and the opening of a training facility with live music, refreshments and an unveiling of the first commercial motorcycle simulator (see photos p. 44). It can be a weekend outlet.” A purchase often marks a milestone in the buyer’s life, Healy says. “They just got divorced, they put the last kid through college, they had a Harley before they had kids and now they hop on one and ride coast to coast. Every motorcycle owner has a story from the heart to tell.”

She says increasing numbers of women are preferring the motorcycle driver’s seat to the passenger’s. One of Healy’s protégés is neighbor Janeen Dutcher, who bought her first Harley in August from the Scottsdale dealership — a pearl-colored 2012 Switchback she calls “Pearla.” “I’ve wanted one since I was 17,” says the 46-year-old executive assistant for the town of Carefree. “I didn’t want to be one of those ‘what if?’ people, and I haven’t stopped smiling since I got Pearla. I love her. There’s a feeling of independence, inner strength,

It’s so much fun and a different experience from sitting on the back as a passenger.” Dutcher says the only hard part was telling her mother, whose boyfriend had been killed in a motorcycle accident. She reassures her mom with safety lessons, helmet and reflective gear. Since the weather has cooled, she says she’s finally had a chance to wear her jacket. “It has vents and a leather black Harley scroll with reflectives. The matching gloves have reflection as well, and I’m going to get a couple of reflective stickers for my helmet.” Safety is critical for riders, Healy says, which is one reason the Parsons-owned Scottsdale dealerships built a new outdoor training facility and contracted with

his Bob “Go Daddy” Parsons party was b-b-b-b-bad to the bone as thousands turned out at the “1st Annual Bob’s Biker Blast” on Oct. 20 to see classic rock mega legends .38 Special and George Thorogood at Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale and GO AZ Motorcycles. Parsons, who acquired both dealerships, has grown the business and is now giving back to the motorcycle community. The all-day event featured the grand opening of the demo and training track, and public demonstrations of the first-ever commercial application of a motorcycle simulator developed for the U.S. military. Non-motorcycle riders paid a $20 donation to Phoenix Children’s Hospital to see the event, which is expected to return next year. 

CATERING FOR THE HOLIDAYS!

Ciao Grazie Pizzeria Opens in DC Ranch Ciao Grazie, a concept created by renowned Valley restaurateur Franco Dalu, recently opened its second location in Canyon Village, 18835 N. Thompson Peak Parkway. “We’ve had a great experience with DMB since joining Main Street at Verrado in 2009,” said Dalu.

Ciao Grazie’s inventive menu draws on Dalu’s Italian heritage and European pedigree as a chef at the Ritz Carlton in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Grand Hotel Eden in Switzerland. The focal point is authentic Italian pizza, made to order from fresh ingredients with homemade mozzarella and tomato sauce, crispy-thin pizza dough and locally sourced toppings. The pies are cooked to perfection in a wood-fired oven. Ciao Grazie’s menu showcases fresh variations of the restaurant’s popular wood-fired salmon, chicken, beef kabobs, paninis and homemade desserts. The contemporary, urban space is complemented with antiques and a bar hewn from native rock. “Our vision was to take a modern environment, and ensure that it is comfortable and family friendly,” said Dalu. “We are especially proud of our expansive outdoor patio and stunning views of the neighboring McDowell Sonoran Preserve.” Topping off the experience, Dalu offers a hand-selected collection of more than 100 red and white wines from small boutique wineries. Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., with Happy Hour daily from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Canyon Village is a commercial hub offering a restaurant and luxury offices next to The DC Ranch Village Health Club and Spa. Nestled at the base of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in DC Ranch. More: www.ciaograzie.us. 

Thompson Peak Hospital

Celebrates 5 Birthday! th

New orthopedic-spine unit planned

cottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak Hospital, the Northeast Valley’s only hospital north of the Loop 101 freeway, is celebrating its 5th birthday by announcing it is adding a new 28-bed medical-surgical unit for orthopedic and spine surgery patients. Located at Scottsdale Road and Thompson Peak Parkway in Grayhawk, the hospital opened Nov. 5, 2007, with patients literally waiting at its entrance. When the doors officially opened, the first patient had already arrived for an MRI exam and the first emergency patient arrived shortly afterward. The 64-bed hospital includes semifinished square footage that allows for addition of bed capacity to meet community

needs. The new orthopedic-spine unit is expected to open in early 2013. Scottsdale Healthcare Thomson Peak Hospital is a growing center for joint replacement, spine surgery and a variety of sports medicine procedures, said Kim Post, hospital administrator. “While these procedures have a decidedly high-tech approach, they’re accompanied by the caring touch of our dedicated staff,” she said. Addition of new beds comes on the heels of the hospital’s recent accreditation as a Cycle III Chest Pain Center, meaning the hospital meets or exceeds Society for Chest Pain Centers criteria for patients needing angioplasty, a procedure to remove blockages in coronary arteries that can cause heart attack.

Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak Hospital’s Ambient Experience MRI and CT reduce anxiety associated with imaging procedures. It is the only system of its kind in Arizona.

Dr. Farshid Sadeghi (urology) and Dr. Jennifer Simone (gynecology) are among the surgeons using the daVinci robotic surgical system at Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak Hospital.

“Being able to offer this potentially lifesaving service is a huge benefit to our neighbors in the Northeast Valley, who can count on Thompson Peak Hospital for nearby, expert care when they experience chest pain that may be a sign of heart attack,” said Post. A leader in minimally invasive surgery, Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak Hospital is home to the high-tech daVinci surgical robot, as well as the MAKOplasty robotic partial knee replacement system. The daVinci enables prostate, gynecologic and other surgeries to be performed precisely through small incisions so patients recover faster with less pain and shorter hospital stays. MAKOplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that allows orthopedic surgeons to resurface damaged bone and precisely place new knee implants while preserving healthy bone, ligaments and tissue. A women’s health and healing unit supports the needs of women receiving treatment for gynecological cancers including ovarian, uterine and cervical cancer. “Many of these patients are going through a physical as well as an emotionally difficult time. This unit helps with their journey. It’s not about the bricks and mortar as much as it is the staff and the way they

treat patients. From the nursing staff to the operating room team, everyone here is phenomenal,” said Dr. Mike Janicek, director of Gynecologic Oncology. Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak Hospital earned a first-place Environmental Excellence Award from Valley Forward Association’s for its peaceful outdoor healing garden. The hospital is also offers Arizona’s only Ambient MRI/CT system that combines calming lighting, projected scenic images and surround sound for patients during these diagnostic imaging exams. Research shows the system results

in a 25 percent to 30 percent reduction in the need for sedation in patients who may be nervous about undergoing these procedures. “Our staff, physicians and volunteers are truly amazing. I grew up in a small town and there’s that same sense of community commitment here. The surroundings are very inspirational. It’s so peaceful and relaxing with a sense of calmness, which is ideal for patient care,” said Post. Scottsdale Healthcare is the largest employer in Scottsdale.  More: www.shc.org.

The Major Retirement Planning Mistakes Why are they made again and again?

M

uch has been written about the classic financial mistakes that plague start-ups, family businesses, corporations and charities. Aside from these blunders, there are also some classic financial missteps that plague retirees. Calling them “mistakes” may be a bit harsh, as not all of them represent errors in judgment. Yet whether they result from ignorance By Gavin Tolan, or fate, we need to be aware of them Williams Financial Inc. as we plan for and enter retirement. Leaving work too early. The full retirement age for many baby boomers is 66. As Social Security benefits rise about 8 percent for every year you delay receiving them, waiting a few years to apply for benefits can position you for greater retirement income. Some of us are forced to make this “mistake.” Roughly 40 percent of us retire earlier than we want to; about half

of us apply for Social Security before full retirement age. Still, any way that you can postpone applying for benefits will leave you with more SSI. Underestimating medical expenses. Fidelity Investments says that the typical couple retiring at 65 today will need $240,000 to pay for their future health care costs (assuming one spouse lives to 82 and the other to 85). The Employee Benefit Research Institute says $231,000 might suffice for 75 percent of retirements, $287,000 for 90 percent of retirements. Prudent retirees explore ways to cover these costs—they do exist. Taking the potential for longevity too lightly. Are you 65? If you are a man, you have a 40 percent chance of living to age

85; if you are a woman, a 53 percent chance. Those numbers are from the Social Security Administration. Planning for a 20- or 30-year retirement isn’t absurd; it may be wise. The Society of Actuaries recently published a report in which about half of the 1,600 respondents (aged 45-60) underestimated their projected life expectancy. We still have a lingering cultural assumption that our retirements might duplicate the relatively brief ones of our parents. Withdrawing too much each year. You may have heard of the “4 percent rule,” a popular guideline stating that you should withdraw only about 4 percent of your retirement savings annually. The “4 percent rule” isn’t a rule, but many cautious retirees do try to abide by it. So why do some retirees withdraw 7 percent or 8 percent a year? In the first phase of retirement, people tend to live it up; more free time naturally promotes new ventures and adventures, and an inclination to live a bit more lavishly. Ignoring tax efficiency & fees. It can be a good idea to have both taxable and tax-advantaged accounts in retirement. Assuming that your retirement will be long, you may want to assign that or that investment to it “preferred domain.” Many younger investors chase the return. Some retirees, however, find a shortfall when they try to live on portfolio income. In response, they move money into stocks offering significant dividends or high-yield bonds, which may be bad moves in the long run. Taking retirement income off both the principal and interest of a portfolio may give you a way to reduce ordinary income and income taxes. Account fees must also be watched. The Department of Labor notes that a 401(k) plan with a 1.5 percent annual account fee would leave a plan participant with 28 percent less money than a 401(k) with a 0.5 percent annual fee. Avoiding market risk. The return on many fixed-rate investments might seem pitiful in comparison to other options these days. Equity investment does invite risk, but the reward may be worth it. Putting college costs before retirement costs. There is no “financial aid” program for retirement. There are no “retirement loans.” Your children have their whole financial lives ahead of them. Try to refrain from touching your home equity or IRA to pay for their education expenses. Retiring with no plan or investment strategy. Many people do this—too many. An unplanned retirement may bring terrible financial surprises; retiring without an investment strategy leaves some people prone to market timing and day trading. These are some of the classic retirement planning mistakes. Why not plan to avoid them? Take a little time to review and refine your retirement strategy in the company of the financial professional you know and trust. 

Penske Museum for 10 More Years

O

n Oct. 8, a visitor strolled into the slick, shiny lobby of the Penske Auto Museum and walked into a little piece of history, becoming the official 200,000th visitor to this understated mecca for racing fans. The lucky lady, who received a checkered flag signed by the current Penske driving team, was visiting the 10-year-old Airpark museum as part of her trip from Albuquerque. Racing fans typically make the Penske museum part of their stay in Scottsdale. And a glance at the gleaming collection of the 19 history-making vehicles on display makes the attraction clear. Penske Racing holds the most wins in Indy car history, with 163 victories, 208 poles and 12 national championships. When it comes to the Indianapolis 500, Penske has won 15 times, including four wins by driver Rick Mears and three with driver Helio Castroneves, who is hungry to join the elite four-time winner club. (Castroneves won ABC’s 2007 Dancing with the Stars and also competed this season of Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars.)

Museum welcomes 200,000th visitor, launches Coffee & Cars event for fall By Emily Soccorsy

Within the glass–enclosed walls of the museum, visitors can gawk at 10 of the 15 winning cars. “They’re all still in working order, too,” says Patrick Hozza, the motorsports specialist who oversees the museum. “That’s a lot of what Penske is known for.” In addition to the Indy cars, visitors will also find an array of vehicles with historical significance. Standing guard near the entrance is a Porsche RS Spider, the piece of curvaceous crimson luster that won a 2008 Sebring endurance race with Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Emmanuel Collard as co-drivers. The Porsche stands as a reminder that Penske Racing’s presence in the sport knows few limits. This was the first overall win for Penske at Sebring and the first time in 20 years a Porsche would claim victory at that race. Just down the aisle is a vehicle better know for its ability to pirouette: Danny Sullivan’s famous 1985 “Spin and Win” car. Halfway through the 1985 race, Sullivan’s car spun out right

penskefeature in front of Mario Andretti, miraculously avoiding collision, then went on to win. It was the fifth Indy 500 triumph for Penske. Hozza points out several nearly identical white-and-orange Indy cars named Castroneves. “This one is a favorite of mine,” Hozza says, his eyes drifting a bit. “I worked for 10 years as part of his pit crew and traveled with the team.” This is the car Castroneves drove to his first Indy 500 victory, and it evokes memories for the former pit crewmember. “I miss race day,” Hozza says. “I miss it from the green flag to the checkered flag.” What he doesn’t miss is the pressure of the pit stops, where fractions of a second could translate into precious loss of status or even a lost race. Still, the Penske pit crew Hozza worked on holds the record in pit competitions at the Indy 500, honors that he attributes to preparation, practice and precision.

7125 E. Chauncey Lane, Phoenix 480-583-4444; www.penskeracingmuseum.com Hours: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Mon.-Sat.; Noon-5 p.m. Sun. The museum opened a decade ago on property owned by Penske Automotive Group, and home to Lamborghini of North Scottsdale, Bentley Scottsdale and Land Rover North Scottsdale on a parcel that was sold after the horse property, Chauncey Farms, closed. A 29-acre parcel directly across Scottsdale Road was bought in May 2012 for $10.2 million by developers planning several additional automotive dealerships. Considered the crown jewel of the Penske dealership chain when it was purchased in the late 1990s, it was deemed the perfect place to display the veritable crown jewels of Penske Racing's illustrious history.

“That’s the whole thing about Penske,” Hozza says. “The preparation they put in to do these pit stops is incredible.” A little piece of Roger Penske’s own racing history is also on display in the “NASCAR Corner” of the museum, with a replica of the 1963 NASCAR Pontiac

A museum-goer looks over Rusty Wallace’s NASCAR.

Catalina Roger Penske drove when he won the NASCAR Riverside 250. Penske raced from 1958 to 1965, when he purchased a Chevy dealership. He quit because of Chevy’s policy that no principal dealership owner could also be a race car driver, due to the danger of the sport at the time. Next to Penske’s Pontiac is Rusty Wallace’s 2005 NASCAR Dodge Charger, in which he scored his last victory before retiring. Visitors who have made it to Scottsdale but haven’t yet had the chance to travel to the Indy 500 will appreciate the chance to walk on hallowed “Brickyard” ground. Original clay bricks from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway pave the walkway between the museum’s back door and the Land Rover test course behind the site. These same bricks mark the start and finish lines at Indy. Standing nearby is a stark reminder of the risks drivers take when they buckle into their cars. Mark Donohue’s Porsche IROQ is on display. Donohue raced in the inaugural IROC series in 1973 and 1974, and won the first race in this white Porsche. A recent similar Porsche driven by Donohue recently sold at auction for $875,000. “But this one is not for sale,” Hozza says. Donohue died in 1975 of a cerebral hemorrhage after his tire blew during a practice session at Vost-Hugel in Austria and caused his car to crash into the catch fencing. Visitors will also find several Indy pace car replicas, a Penske’s Formula 1 car, as well as images commemorating each of Penske Racing’s Indy wins.

A stroll upstairs reveals near 360-degree views of the mountain ranges flanking the Valley, as well as a bevy of trophies won by Penske Racing. There are also exact quarter-size scale models of nine of Penske’s first 10 winning Indy cars. “Every little nut and bolt you see is an actual nut and bolt,” Hozza explains. A gift store trophy room offers Indy bricks for sale.

Museum Cafe

The Penske Museum Café is also located upstairs and provides sandwiches, salads and light fare and is open to the public on weekdays. Hozza notes customers having their car serviced anywhere on the property are welcome to enjoy the café while waiting for their vehicles, and Wi-Fi is available to all. Throughout the fall, the Penske Museum will be hosting Cars & Coffee every third Saturday of the month, an event where the museum opens it’s massive glass front doors, offers coffee and invites specialty car collectors to bring their vehicles. “People who have cool cars come, and people who live cool cars come,” Hozza says. If Saturdays prove to busy to visit, the free museum is open every other day, with staff available to guide tours of the museum or answer any questions. The museum also hosts private events. “We invite people to come and visit,” Hozza says. “If I had a quarter for every time our visitors have told me we are the best kept secret in Scottsdale, I would be retired by now.” 

So You Want to Crowdfund Your New Business? Definition of crowdfunding: noun [mass noun] the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet: musicians, filmmakers, and artists have successfully raised funds and fostered awareness through crowdfunding. — Oxford Dictionary

58 | Scottsdale Airpark News November 2012

Some of the most dramatic statistics demonstrate the expanding use of crowdfunding for artistic projects. Take, By Jonathan Frutkin, for example, the The Frutkin Law Firm incredibly successful K i c k s t a r t e r. c o m , which alone has raised more than $250 million in funding for creative endeavors this year. Every penny of the money came from Internet users who believed so strongly in a proposed art project they actually contributed money to see it come to fruition. To gain some perspective, the entire budget for the federal National Endowment for the Arts is only $146 million. Crowdfunding, in many ways, is becoming more powerful than fiscal choices made by the government. But Crowdfunding is also all the rage for business. After all, what’s better than advertising a new invention, having the world pre-order and pre-pay, and using all that money to manufacture and deliver the product? You simply post information (including an informational video) on a website where interested consumers may “invest,” often in the form of preordering a product. KickStarter, for instance, impounds the purchase price until a predetermined amount of money is committed to the project. The website then releases the funds to the inventor, keeping a small service fee. Granted, the person investing in the project takes on considerable risk. First, there is no guarantee the product will actually be developed or delivered. A number of problems can occur—from concept to prototype to actual product manufacture. It may turn out that the great innovative product envisioned by the inventor will be derailed by engineering challenges. Or the materials required for the product may end up costing more than anticipated. And in some rare instances, the product developer may simply decide to pocket the money, leaving those early customers with no real recourse. Chances that the product will actually be delivered on time are practically nil. It is almost always the case that the initial order will require much more development and

JOB MATCHING: testing than the entrepreneur expects. This means delays of six months to a year are not uncommon. Compare this to a normal product roll-out schedule. Usually a series of prototypes are made to develop the proper tooling, material mix and process. Then after some period of testing, a full production run can begin. However, for most entrepreneurs with cutting-edge products, the manufacturing process is unique by definition. So the combination of a new product, usually inexperienced entrepreneur, and massive influx of orders inevitably leads to disappointing slippage in delivery dates.

The Key to Lowering Labor Costs & Increasing Performance Levels Call TTI for a demonstration of our Job Matching system.

Risk to Entrepreneur

The real risk is to the product entrepreneurs and their brands. Remember that the investors in a crowdfunded business tend to be more technologically advanced and much more active on social media. Online product reviews and inclusion on Facebook and Twitter feeds often drive sales more than traditional marketing. Technology marketing guru Geoffrey A. Moore points out that those most likely to promote disruptive products are early adopters. These types of products are more than just an enhancement of an existing product; think more “iPad” and less “a better mousetrap.” There are many other types of crowdfunding, including equity investing and charitable giving opportunities. However, the use of the Internet to reach interested individuals (and equity funds) is a growing area that businesses in the Airpark need to be aware of. Even Congress has recognized that crowdfunding creates employment. The 2012 JOBS Act promotes crowdfunding opportunities for equity investment in small businesses without the need to hop through the traditional extensive regulatory hoops erected by the SEC. The expectation is that 2013 will be a banner year for crowdfunding small businesses. 

Speakers of the day will share inspiring stories about rescue pets who in turn rescue people. Meet Sadie and see her demonstrate her talents as the country’s best accelerant-detecting canine. Sadie has helped the Phoenix Fire Department go from the lowest-rated arson detection unit in the country to the highest-rated one. The morning emcee will be Nick Lowery, a 17-year veteran of the NFL and a former All-Pro place-kicker with the Kansas City Chiefs. He has earned numerous awards and honors including the Byron “Whizzer” White Humanitarian Award; Bill Gallo Sportsman of the Year Award; U.S. Jaycees Ten Outstanding Young American Award; Kansas City Spirit Award; Outstanding Young People of the World Award; and Governor’s Leadership Award. Making a special appearance is Jessi Colter, a singer, songwriter and entertainer whose influences echo across music genres. Jessi is also known for her collaborations with her husband, Waylon Jennings. She created such greats as the No. 1 hit “I’m not Lisa,” followed a year later by the success of the album Wanted! The Outlaws, a collaboration with Jennings, Willie Nelson and Tompall Glaser that sold a million copies. Her best-known duets with Jennings are “Suspicious Minds” and her soothing composition “Storms Never Last.” Polanski founded the organization four years ago, alarmed by the number of pets abandoned in foreclosed homes. “Our mission is to be a resource for real estate professionals and other members of the community who discover abandoned pets,” she says. “Options are provided for pet owners who are faced with difficult economic circumstances while promoting the spaying and neutering of all pets. Currently, we are at capacity with our services and we are in need of growing our nonprofit to continue to meet the increasing demand in our community.” Lost Our Home asks you to fill a home with warmth this holiday season by giving the gift of a second chance to a furry friend and the joy a new pet brings to a home. The funds raised at the event will directly support the organization to assist more abandoned pets and financially struggling pets and parents around the Valley. Facebook Contests

ave you considered using a Facebook contest to promote your business? These days, it seems just about everyone is giving away something on Facebook. iPad or $100 gift certificate, anyone? How about a free vacation or maybe even a closet makeover? Facebook contests are a great way to generate buzz, encourage brand interaction and attract new customers. But how do you get started, not to mention get results?

L&J Motor Vehicle Services,

With more than 1 billion people using Facebook worldwide, it’s no secret that the social media tool is a great way to connect with customers and grow your business. Facebook contests can increase the number of people who “Like” your business, and even more important, contests can provide valuable customer information for marketing your business long after the contest has ended. Here are nine best practices that will make your Facebook contest a success.

#1: What Do You Want to Get Out of the Contest?

First, determine what your company hopes to gain from the contest. Ask yourself a few questions: What do you hope to achieve? Do you want to increase brand awareness or highlight a new product? Are you hoping to increase the number of Likes on your page? Do you want to boost user engagement, gather user feedback or develop advocates for your brand?

Bottom line, have specific goals and don’t run a contest just because everyone else is doing it.

#2: Which Type of Facebook Contest?

There are four basic types of contests you can run on Facebook: sweepstakes, essay, photo, and video. The type of contest you run matters because each one appeals to a different audience. Video, photo and essay contests will give you lots of content for your page, but they also require more effort from a customer. A sweepstakes contest is easy to enter and you can set it up so you get a few key pieces of information from your customers. Classy Closets is a Scottsdale Airpark-based closet company that designs storage solutions for closets, garages, home offices, laundry spaces, bedrooms, etc. When the folks at Classy Closets started their latest contest, they wanted to use social media to target different audiences, which made their Facebook page a key ingredient in creating the right “voice.” They held an essay-based contest in which entrants submitted stories about why they were the best candidates for a $10,000 Dream Closet Makeover. Because the essay format requires a little more effort on behalf of the entrant, Classy Closets incentivized people by offering an additional 100 mini-closet makeovers to be randomly awarded throughout the course of the contest.

#3: Know Facebook’s Policies and Guidelines

When it comes to contests, Facebook has an extensive list of “do’s and don’ts.” For example, you’re not

allowed to use a Facebook feature such as the Like button to enter or vote. Another surprising rule is that you must notify winners via email, snail mail or phone call before you congratulate them publicly on Facebook or send them a Facebook message. And you can’t include calls to action such as “Don’t forget to vote” or “Tell your friends” on your Timeline cover image— and the list goes on. However, the chief priority when initiating a contest on Facebook is that your customers are happy. By keeping the contest simple, the rules clear and the updates frequent, you can avoid the pitfalls typically associated with poorly managed promotions. Violating any of Facebook’s rules will result in your contest (and possibly your page) being shut down. Save yourself a headache and familiarize yourself with Facebook’s contest and promotion rules.

#4: Choose a ThirdParty App to Run the Contest

Facebook explicitly requires businesses to run a contest on a third-party application, so which one should you choose? There are lots of companies that provide contest support, but keep in mind managing a Facebook contest (even on a third-party app) requires time and human social media savvy so be sure to pick an app that is easy for you to use. Here’s what to look for:  The app should be flexible. If it’s not customizable, the app might not give you the results you’re after.  The price should be right. Some third-party apps are free, while others can cost thousands of dollars a month. Obviously using an app that’s low-cost or free reduces your risk if the contest doesn’t deliver the results you’re after.

marketingtoolbox  The app should be embeddable or have “Anywhere” capabilities. Many third-party apps only work on Facebook. Look for one that allows you to install the contest on your website too.  The app must have mobile capabilities. Why? Because nearly 600 million of Facebook’s most active users access Facebook from a mobile device. That’s an increase of 67 percent over last year! Why not make it easy for mobile Facebookers to get to your contest?

#5: Pick a Relevant Prize

While an iPad is nothing to sneeze at, you’d be better off using contests to showcase your own products and services. After all, people are coming to your page because they are interested in learning more about what you offer. The prize you offer doesn’t need to break the bank, but increasing the novelty or value of the prize you offer will likely increase the quality, participation and buzz factor for the contest overall. Classy Closets Dream Closet Makeover contest offered one Grand Prize valued at $10,000 and 100 Second Prizes valued at $350 each. Both the Grand Prize and the Second Prizes were exciting enough to encourage more than 1,600 entries over the course of one month.

#6: Keep it Simple

What’s the secret to running a successful campaign? Make it easy to enter. Yes, there are lots of examples of super-creative contests that attract plenty of attention, but there are even more examples of innovative contests that flop because they’re too complicated. Ask for less information while still getting what you need. In some cases, this might be just the entrant’s name, age and email address.

marketingtoolbox With just three steps, Classy Closets made their contest extremely easy for their fans to enter. The contest app also needs to be easy to find. Title the app something that communicates what the contest is and link to it often so people know exactly where to go to enter.

#7: Tell the World About Your Contest

#8: Consider Facebook Ads

Investing in Facebook Ads can be a great and affordable way to increase the reach of your promotion. Facebook Ad spaces are small, so it’s essential that your ads are simple to understand and eye-catching. Facebook Ads make it easy to target users who share your interests and demographics, and they’re also a way to reach beyond the people who already Like your page.

#9: Finally: Don’t Forget to Follow Up

Your promotion is over, the prizes have been awarded … and now you’re done, right? Not so fast. You ran the promotion so you could gather information about your customers, so spend some time to decide the best way to utilize the information you’ve reaped. The best third-party contest apps will do all the work for you by exporting customer data into a database; some will even export the data directly to your email marketing software so you can instantly contact new customers and integrate them into your marketing outreach. Make sure you follow up and let them know that you’re listening so they’ll be motivated to keep engaging with you. Ultimately they’ll be even bigger fans of your business. 

If you’re hosting a contest on Facebook, use all the other tools in your marketing toolbox to get the word out. Put it on your website, promote it on Twitter, include it in email newsletters and send out reminders. Many of the popular contest apps have “social tools” built-in to help you spread the word through multiple social media platforms with just one click. Be sure to market your contest by integrating it into your other company marketing efforts that may or may not be online. Consider mentions on receipts, in newsletters, on signage and during radio ads.

ADVICE FROM WEISS November Business Horoscope By Weiss Kelly, PMAFA Whether you’re a small-business owner or have other career aspirations, insights into how the planets influence your work month can help you plan for maximum performance and project success. Editor’s Note: Weiss is putting herself out there with the prediction that the results of the presidential election will not be resolved until after Nov. 20. This month’s horoscopes reflect this time of indecision. ARIES (3/21-4/19) You’ll put in extra hours and effort the first week. In addition to November’s intensity, conflicts in relationships may need prompt resolutions. Better address them before the 6th, as nothing will be finalized until later in the month. Allow yourself options, and use downtime for review. TAURUS (4/20-5/20) High anxiety reigns from the 7th to the 15th. Along with the usual delays, be aware that negotiations need careful handling. The big cliffhangers this month cluster around the market, loans and taxes. The good news is that home construction and related suppliers/businesses come alive (especially in June 2013). The month ends with more stability. GEMINI (5/21-6/20) Your sights are set high this month, but you may have to slow down a tad. Hold off buying that tech toy until the end of the month. The New Moon on the 16th is favorable for making a new start or implementing a plan, while the Full Moon on the 28th bodes well for your personal success. CANCER (6/21-7/22) This month should bring a kind of relief. All home-related industries show great promise. You may be caught between two opposing obligations. Get clear about this before the second week. If you haven’t resolved conflicts by then, go with what feels freeing. You need time for renewal around the 25th. You can end the month with success!

LIBRA (9/23-10/22) Part of this month’s stress is due to $$ commitments. Midmonth is your wakeup call. You see the light at the end of the tunnel by the third week. The next 2.5 years call for a conservative approach. If starting a business or career, patch broken goals and come up with new constructive skills. Devote the last two weeks to getting organized! SCORPIO (10/23-11/21) You’re my favorite sign to write about this month. A major planet entered your sign in October and will remain there for the next 2.5 years; it’s putting you to the test and bringing out your best. You’ll be learning and building a new future, career, ability—and most of all, a new you. Though you may feel impatient, you’ll grow the first half of the month. Go ahead and socialize. Financial opportunities could open up the last week. It’s all good. SAGITTARIUS (11/22-12/21) Keep to yourself at month’s start. If travel is indicated, make arrangements early on. Important decisions or meetings could be canceled. A state of confusion and noncommitment surrounds you until the last week or so. Collaborative efforts take extra time and may curtail your freedom through the 26th. CAPRICORN (12/22-1/19) Establishing a professional group commitment is essential to your success these next few years. Relationships of all kinds get a boost this month. Internships and entry-level jobs are favored. Make inquires or do research, but don’t expect an immediate response until later in the month.

LEO (7/23-8/22) On the 16th, you’ll be working a bit harder. Expect to move forward on an important project or deal later after the 26th, when confusing situations may be inconvenient but are easily handled. It’s good business sense to attend networking events.

AQUARIUS (1/20-2/19) Now that vacation and travel are out of the way, responsibilities increase. Despite feeling a bit restricted (second to third week), you can still make progress if you’re willing to put in the effort. In fact, you can accomplish whatever you set out to do, particularly after the 27th.

VIRGO (8/23-9/22) Although November’s happenings are unpredictable, you can trust your intuition and analytical ability to be on the money. The coming critical weeks offer big insights into the potential of your business. Take your time making decisions on the 20th-21st. Get all the details worked out and implement a plan at month’s end.

PISCES (2/20-3/20) Disruptions could throw roadblocks into your work plans the first week. What may seem to be easy may end up hard; avoid problems by preplanning and getting backup. Plans change, and at least one long-held opinion is revised. Your work brings a sense of security for the next two years. 

HEARD MUSEUM NORTH FEATURES NAVAJO PHOTOGRAPHERS, CONTEMPORARY INDIAN ART

Contemporary Navajo photographers and American Indian artists of the Southwest employing a variety of media display their art this fall at the Heard Museum North Scottsdale, at the Summit, 32633 N. Scottsdale Road. On loan from the Navajo Nation Museum in Window Rock is “Through the Lens: Diné Photographers,” an exhibition of work by contemporary Navajo photographers. This marks the first time ever that a show curated by a regional museum of American Indian arts/culture has traveled to the Heard. The exhibit shows the many ways Navajo photographers celebrate the beauty and comment on their home, their land and contemporary life. The photographs will also provide an opportunity to explore the similarities and differences between Navajo culture and mainstream culture via themes such as rites of passage, sports, family and love of the land. The exhibit is on display through Nov. 25. In the ongoing “Choices & Change: American Indian Artists in the Southwest,” art is shown to be the bridge between a past rich in tradition and an ever-changing current and future culture. Jewelry, sculpture, pottery and paintings from the Heard’s collection show the innovations and the differences in the artists’ personal creations. Also in the main gallery is a restored mural by the late Charles Loloma. Info: www.heard.org/north. 
