[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] Memorial Day always seems to take me by surprise, just like it did this year. Otherwise I would have remembered to write this letter before the holiday, not after (like I do every year). So why do I bring it up at all, especially since there are 355 days until the next Memorial Day? Because it’s too important to ignore. This, after all, is the day set aside to remember the sacrifices made on our behalf, mostly by total strangers. I sense that Americans are more connected to July 4 (which commemorates an event more than two centuries old) than we are to this annual day that honors people who served our country in the much more recent past. Especially considering we still have a military presence in hotspots around the world. I guess things were different for ‘the greatest generation,’ the one that served in World War II. The scope of that war and the universal draft made veterans, alive and fallen, top-of-mind for every family. Now some communities are hard-pressed to think of a military family in their acquaintance. That certainly makes it easier to spend the fourth Monday in May at holiday sales and picnics instead of at parades and cemeteries. I don’t even see many flags in my neighborhood. But I’m determined to haul out mine every Memorial Day in the hope that it conveys the message that there is a place in my heart for those who have fallen in service—and it’s not limited to Memorial Day.

RAYMOND JAMES

A NAIVE 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL, against the wishes of her deeply religious family, enters into what she mistakenly believes is a legally binding marriage with a dashing navy officer. He leaves soon after their wedding night. Three years later, she’s still faithfully waiting for his return, eager to introduce him to the son he has never met. When she finds out he has married another woman, she commits suicide. No, this isn’t the latest episode of Teen Mom or Maury. It’s the plot of one of the most beloved operas of all time, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. The enduring tale of love and heartbreak, set in Japan, has moved audiences since 1904. It returns July 12 to Union Avenue Opera for a two-weekend run sponsored by Raymond James & Associates. “Madama Butterfly is one of Puccini’s most powerful scores,” says Scott Schoonover, founder and artistic director of UAO. “The music is amazing—Puccini brings the characters’ emotions to life.” It’s also one of the most accessible operas of all time, a great story about love and cultural conflict that everyone can relate to, he adds. “In fact, it was the inspiration for Miss Saigon, the enormously popular contemporary musical.” The production, sung in the original Italian with an English translation projected on either side of the stage, features a full orchestra. Lead performers include Ann Hoyt Wazelle as CioCio-San, the title character, and Mathew Edwardsen as Pinkerton, the well-meaning but insensitive American naval officer. “We first presented Madama Butterfly 10 years ago, and in honor of its return engagement, we reduced the price of season tickets to what they were in 2003,” Schoonover says. Union Avenue Opera is now celebrating its 19th season. “I came here right out of school, determined to create opportunities for all my talented friends who didn’t have jobs,” Schoonover recalls. “But it’s grown into something bigger and better than any of us imagined.” Some people think opera is a just bunch of people warbling and waving their hands around, he notes. “But UAO, with help from Raymond James, is here to change their minds,” he says. “We stage each production like an intimate play, emphasizing how the characters relate to each other and telling their stories through some of the best, most stirring music ever written.” Raymond James, a leading financial services firm, has a strong commitment to the arts. “We’ve supported UAO for years, but this is the first time we’ve sponsored an entire production,” says St. Louis area market manager Michael O’Meara. How did the firm find out about UAO? “By listening to our clients and employees!” he says. “One of our staff is on the board, and a couple have actually performed with the opera. UAO is a hidden gem on the local arts scene, offering terrific performances from local and national talent at affordable prices. We’re proud to shine a spotlight on their magnificent work.”

TALK [TOWNS] by bill beggs jr.

With a Wendy’s now operating on part of the large lot that was formerly home to Rothman Furniture, it’s development as usual along a commercial stretch of Manchester Road in Ballwin—with one notable exception. There could also be an indoor shooting range there (Rothman’s former address was 14799). Based on developments, including a June 3 public hearing featuring local dealer Hindo, small-arms aficionados could soon find a place nearby for indoor target practice. Hindo has a gun shop further west, at 15531 Manchester in Wildwood. Meanwhile, by Labor Day a U-Gas convenience store also should be up and running on the site, on the north side of Manchester and just east of Ries Road. For a California woman, the realization must have been akin to winning a lottery she hadn’t entered: Mimi McKenzie learned via the media that her father’s World War II medals had turned up at the Goodwill store in Chesterfield. Indeed, Marine Sgt. James Joseph McKenzie, a native St. Louisan who died in 1979 at age 60, was a war hero. Among the regalia with a Purple Heart is the Silver Star, his prestigious recognition for aiding men trapped by Japanese bombardment in 1942. McKenzie spent the remainder of the conflict, more than three years, as a prisoner of war. Quite the story to kick off a Memorial Day weekend: McKenzie’s daughter contacted Goodwill on May 24 to claim her family treasures. The man intent on finding the rightful owner? Lewis Chartock, Goodwill’s president and CEO, himself a Vietnam vet. Shhh! Could you kids please keep it down? This is a library. That entreaty will fall on

OF THE

deaf ears one day next month, when the Battle of the Bands finals will be held—at St. Louis County Library headquarters. This will be the fourth year raucous rockers have made a righteous racket at SLCL HQ, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd. in Ladue, as part of the library’s Art @ Your Library series. Bands can enter online through June 9 at slcl.org/teens; fans may vote online June 12 through 30 for their favorite. The three bands with the most votes, plus two critics’ choices, will compete July 13 at Library HQ. Cash prizes will be awarded for first and second place. Every other month, all 20 SLCL branches host interactive programs to introduce kids to the arts. Our first thought, when hearing about the Maplewood convenience store burglars who made off with 42 cartons of cigarettes, was how freaking expensive cigarettes are nowadays. They were valued at $1,045, which is $545 a knucklehead’s side of felony theft. At that point, whether $2.50 a pack is retail or the store’s cost, is moot. Felons who break windows with ‘a large rock’ are not prone to a BGO—Blinding Glimpse of the Obvious. Therefore, let us shout at them, in print: The C-stores, banks, and other places of business that so tempt you HAVE SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS! That

means you are on video, which is a slamdunk for prosecutors. Class dismissed. The perp was being held in the county clink in lieu of $20,000 bond. Perhaps if he gets the opportunity to spend a long time behind bars, he can brush up on his poker skills. What do they play for inside? Right … cigarettes. (Even at our stage of youth deprivation, we recall cigarettes at less than 50 cents a pack in the ’70s.) Mound City was a moniker for St. Louis back when European invaders, our ancestors, were resettling this region. Dozens of ancient mounds created by the Mississippian moundbuilding culture dotted the landscape, and over the last 200-odd years most of them were leveled … for progress. At the turn of the 20th century, more than a dozen mounds in Forest Park disappeared for the World’s Fair, in plenty of time to exploit the native population of the Philippines, proud new Pacific possession of the United States. In a pavilion was a display of humanity akin to a circus sideshow, where Filipino natives were on view for the astonishment of St. Louisans. My goodness, parasol-twirling women in crinolines must have sputtered, they have tattoos! The city’s very last mound remains at

ST. LOUIS CITY

4420 Ohio St. in industrialized South City, very near the Mississippi’s west bank. ‘Private Property’ signs warn off anyone who might want to see how commanding a view of the river Sugarloaf Mound might have. Indeed, 2,000 years ago it might have been the site of the chief’s residence. Osage Nation, whom tribal leaders believe are descended from the mound builders, purchased the property four years ago. Plans are unfolding for removal of a boarded-up house and preservation of the remaining mound, while adding an interpretive center. There isn’t much left of this mound the Osage revere. It can easily be seen from northbound I-55 at the southernmost Broadway exit, to the right, toward the river. The highway project removed much of its western face in the 1960s. About two centuries ago, a quarry carved out who knows how many cubic feet on the river side. We’re confident the Osage will help the site reclaim some of its historic dignity. May it remind us, at least, of what we have pushed aside to get where we are. No more pencils, no more books: The time has come for bricks and mortar, lumber, sheet metal … and all the other materials that will start to make good on Proposition U, the bond issue for U. City schools that voters passed in April. Things should cool down and/ or warm up district-wide, as much of the $19.4 million is earmarked for HVAC improvements. U. City High has the longest list of improvements for this summer alone, including roof section replacements, upgrades to the aquatic center, and renovations to the athletic department and dance studio. There will be upgrades to the kiln rooms at Flynn Park and Jackson Park elementary schools, and a new one will be built at Brittany Woods Middle School. (When it was hot in

Dan Belcher knows exactly how ice sculptors feel. Two hundred tons of sand were trucked in to build a beach in Kirkwood. Seventy-five tons went into the sandcastle now on display outside The Magic House, and we visited with the sculptor as he applied touches with a trowel—between thunderstorms—for the museum’s upcoming June exhibit, Sandcastle Beach. Tides aren’t a problem out here, but sideways rain can be. So what keeps it all together? Without looking up from his handiwork, Belcher pointed his trowel above to the canvas sheltering his work. “I have this thing called a tent,” he said. A dragon wrapped around the base of a castle, perhaps Smaug from The Hobbit. This is the ninth castle Belcher has built as part of the annual summer smash at the hands-on children’s museum. On the exhibit patio, visitors can stroll along the boardwalk, dig for seashells, stretch out under a beach umbrella and build their own sandcastle … that’s perhaps a little less ambitious. Meanwhile, Belcher stood up and with a spray bottle gently moistened the wing section he’d just completed. And the skies began to clear. For the time being. The great, rainy unknown must always be factored into our region’s many free arts festivals, from Laumeier Sculpture Park over Mother’s Day weekend, to Art on the Square in Belleville, Ill., to Art & Air in Webster Groves. Webster’s event, June 8, has one factor already well in hand: It’s from 6 to 10 p.m., when one hopes the day’s heat will have started to drop. One of the area’s more prestigious juried art shows, Art & Air also features demonstrations, premier musical entertainment (jazz siren Erin Bode, plus some funkier fare) and three tents where younger artists can try their hand at extemporaneous creativity. Ever seen and heard a musical petting zoo? Well, experience the 10th anniversary of the art fair on the Eden Theological Seminary campus, Bompart and Lockwood. Visit wcaf.org/artandair The county’s newest official town is largely quiet, pastoral and bucolic. County police reports from Wildwood are often kind of peaceful, too, unless they involve motorists and deer, which usually don’t turn out well (for the deer, at least). Recent reports include a runaway horse, which was returned to its pasture without incident. How pastoral. Then we come to the goats running loose somewhere along Manchester Road. Imagine the call to tell the goat owners, so to speak, that the cops ‘got their goat.’ Again. It seems the owners are known from numerous calls and were issued summonses. For what, pray tell? Our imagination runs almost as wild as goats unrestrained by fencing.

REBECCA HENDIN

If you’re planning a trip to London this summer, you might want to drop by Foyles 110-year-old bookstore on Charing Cross Road. There you’ll find All Paths Lead to Foyles, a mural by former St. Louisan REBECCA HENDIN (Parkway Central ’06). The work, composed of hand-drawn imagery and photography, celebrates the building’s status as the epicenter of London’s historic music and bookselling district. Hendin’s design was selected from 10 proposals submitted by graduates of Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts and Design. Hendin’s father, Roy Hendin, and his wife, Susan Dertke Hendin, live in Chesterfield. THE ARTWORK WILL BE ON DISPLAY THROUGH SEPT. 30.

We all have memories of long-ago family vacations. Local author Douglas Scott Brookes has turned his into a book. UP NORTH: ST. LOUIS’S SUMMER COLONIES ON LAKE HURON IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF TRAVEL, focuses on the heydey of Lake Huron beach communities between 1880 and 1950. Brookes uses excerpts from letters and diaries to paint a vivid portrait of life at the resorts where thousands of St. Louisans vacationed. He’ll read from the book June 25 at Missouri History Museum.

“ limelight ”

It’s a word we all use, taking for granted that it means ‘spotlight.’ But why ‘limelight’? Why not bask in the glow of some other citrus fruit? Because the lime in question here is not the fruit, but the mineral. Originally, limelight, also known as calcium light, was an intense, white light produced by heating a piece of lime in a flame consisting of oxygen and hydrogen. The effect was discovered in the 1820s and utilized to develop a bright light, first used for surveying and later in 19th-century theaters to illuminate solo performers. Limelight was replaced by electric arc lighting in the late 1800s, but the word lingered. Its first figurative use seems to have been a 1902 news item in The New York Times: “William S. Devery was in the limelight last evening. Tens of thousands of people...crowded the streets...and shouted the name of the ex-chief of police of New York.” To this day, people or topics in the center of attention are said to be in the limelight.

The Saint Louis Art Museum, Washington University and the government of Guatemala have a long-term collaboration in displaying Maya artifacts in St. Louis, such as Stela Eight (pictured), a sculpture with hieroglyphic inscriptions that Freidel discussed in a gallery talk last month. RESEARCH UPDATE: Freidel’s team recently discovered the tomb of Lady K’abel, a seventh-century Maya Holy Snake Lord considered to be the greatest ruler of the Late Classic period. An alabaster jar with four glyphs and a carving of an older woman helped researchers identify the crypt’s owner. WHY ARCHAEOLOGY? My father was a historian and very fascinated by archaeology. He took me to

many museums. I remember as a child living in England, between ages 9 and 12, I went to very beautiful ruins of an old abbey and was facsinated by ruins. I had the opportunity at age 17 to go to an archaeological dig, and I learned I love wilderness and working outdoors. The challenges of trying to understand human experiences of the deep past, before we had any history, fascinated me. JUNGLE LIFE: There are dangerous creatures in the forest, so I wear snake boots all the time when I am on the site. The daily challenges are mostly the heat; we have to watch out for dehydration. Archaeology as a general rule is a discipline that requires focus when things are very ordinary. In an excavation, you get one try to get it right. By definition, archaeology is a destruction process. You must record it extremely carefully, and it takes a lot of discipline to do that. That’s the main challenge in archaeology: maintaining the physical discipline, being meticulous, recording everything correctly the first time. LESSONS LEARNED: In general, Maya believed that human beings are central and pivotal to the health and well-being of the universe—they were created for that purpose by the gods. They see themselves as bearing a covenential relationship to maize, the principal deity. They know corn cannot live without them, and they cannot live without corn. When you think of corn as godlike, as something that eventually gave food to human beings, you know the world isn’t going to prosper without you. If they don’t sustain and nurture it, it will die. Guess what? That is how the world really is. I’d rather have the Maya in charge of things now than us. JUNE 5, 2013

Patients discover about half of all melanomas. That means the other half are found by another person or physician. Consequently, the American Cancer Society recommends that everyone undergo an annual skin exam by a physician starting at age 40. People 20 to 39 should have their skin examined by a physician at least every three years, more frequently if they have risk factors. Smartphone apps for skin cancer detection are good for getting people interested in looking at their skin and identifying suspicious areas. They’re helpful as educational devices, but they shouldn’t be used as diagnostic tools for skin cancers. There was a study about apps published in Journal of the American Medical Association this year. Researchers tested four different smartphone apps to determine their accuracy in diagnosing melanoma. Pictures of biopsy-proven melanomas were submitted. The accuracy of these applications was highly variable. Their sensitivities ranged from 6.9 to 98.1 percent. The app that was the most sensitive was one where images were actually reviewed by a board-certified dermatologist. The other apps used an automated algorithm to analyze the images.

Translating what you see on your own skin can be difficult and can require practice. There’s nothing wrong with patients looking at photographs online and in books, comparing them to what they see on their skin. But make an appointment with a physician to be on the safe side. Frequently, dermatologists spot something more significant than what the patient thought was the problem, which turns out to be benign. Patients are amazed when we remove something that was almost invisible to them. That’s how we how often diagnose skin cancers. But to make a confirmatory diagnosis, we frequently need a biopsy to make sure what patients are concerned about is truly worrisome. We ask patients to perform self-exams, and we train them about what to look for and show them how to examine hard-to-see areas with a mirror. But patients need to have whatever has changed on their skin examined by a doctor. If their primary physician is unsure about something, head to a dermatologist.

HEALTH&BEAUTY

[ the importance of peels ] Lighter, brighter and smoother skin can be yours with a chemical peel. Active ingredients and strengths vary. >>> jackie carr, ADULT NURSE PRACTITIONER,

AESTHETIC MEDISPA OF WEST COUNTY Facial peels, also known as chemical peels, are a good way to stimulate skin rejuvenation. They vary in strength. Some are superficial and require little to no downtime. Others require seven to 10 days of healing time. Chemical peels can help maintain a more youthful appearance, if they’re initiated early enough. People whose skin has significant sun damage, pigmentation issues, deep lines and wrinkles may derive more benefit from aggressive treatment, such as a laser treatment followed by chemical peels on a regular basis to maintain results. We recommend the eCO2 laser. Compared to a traditional laser, the eCO2 allows for faster healing with less pain, swelling and redness. Many patients achieve significant results with just one treatment. Patients who want more dramatic results may opt for two to three peels scheduled a few months apart. A peeland-bleach cream used six weeks before laser treatment helps improve laser results. Patients must avoid sun exposure before treatment and during the healing phase. With proper precautions, the procedure can be performed during the summer.

kristin green, LICENSED AESTHETICIAN, WEST COUNTY PLASTIC SURGEONS OF WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY Chemical peels are good for all skin types. They can be mild, moderate or aggressive. Even a teenager can benefit from a peel. He or she won’t need them as often as someone older—skin cell turnover slows down as we age—but peels can help with acne. I recommend a peel every four to six weeks. Without peels, skin can become dull and doesn’t reflect light as well. Active ingredients in peels target skin types and conditions. Ingredients include glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids. We can apply them in straight concentrations or as a blend. Glycolic acid is good for all skin types. It can be used in a concentration up to 70 percent, which is aggressive. Salicylic acid can be applied in concentrations of 10 to 55 percent. Lactic acid tops off at 50 percent. You won’t find any chemical stronger than 30 percent in a salon.

hair removal: is the permanent fix worth it? // “Laser hair removal is absolutely worth it, if you value your time and don’t want to spend it on shaving,” says BOARDCERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON DR. JUDITH GURLEY, who has undergone the treatment. “LHR also eliminates razor stubble and cures folliculitis, those pimply-looking bumps that occur after shaving.” Gurley has one of the newest LHR systems. Her unit has a vacuum-assisted hand piece that suctions the skin undergoing treatment. This helps numb the treatment area. “It’s quicker and so much more tolerable than older laser systems,” Gurley says. And because the platform, or piece that actually touches the patient, is larger, there are fewer laser zaps to endure. Approximately 50 percent of hair follicles are destroyed following the first treatment, with up to 90 percent destroyed after the fourth treatment. Treatments are staggered four to six weeks apart: That’s because not all hair is in the same growth phase,” Gurley says. Laser hair removal results in permanent hair reduction. “Although some small hairs will remain, they’re so fine it takes magnification to see them,” she says.

“The SPF number is important, but so is how you use it,” says DR. DANIEL RING OF WEST COUNTY DERMATOLOGY. “I think it’s more important to reapply sunscreen as opposed to using the highest SPF once a day.” Look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that will protect against ultraviolet A and B rays. “I generally recommend an SPF of 30 or greater, but it also depends upon your medical history, where you’re going, and the activity you’re engaging in,” Ring says. “Sometimes water resistance is a good feature to include.” SPF refers to a product’s sun protection factor rating. An SPF 30 blocks out 97 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, whereas an SPF 45 blocks out 98 percent. “Some people are so sun-sensitive that they need an SPF 100,” Ring says. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside and then reapply every two hours, Ring advises. “If you’re in the water and towel off, reapply sunscreen, let it soak in for a while and then continue your activities.” Typically an ounce, or the amount contained in a shot glass, is enough to cover the exposed areas of the body.

Age, gravity and sun exposure cause skin—and spirits—to sag. Make sure you use products that fight back. >> dr. joe muccini,

MIDAMERICA SKIN HEALTH & VITALITY CENTER The name of the game is collagen remodelingand defending the elasticity of the skin. For that, you need a retinoid. These vitamin A derivatives are available over the counter and by prescription. Retinols are the classic over-the-counter drugs; trentinoin is the stronger prescribed version. There are some good retinols, but my advice is to bite the bullet, and the cost, and get the prescription stuff. It will help limit aging and undo some elastosis, the saggy quality of skin as it ages. C serum, a vitamin C derivative, is another good product. It’s a free-radical scavenger that helps prevent additional damage. It’s also a necessary co-factor in collagen synthesis. It’s not enough to take vitamin C orally. You need a product that can be applied for the skin to receive the necessary concentration. Other essential skin building blocks are growth factors. SkinCeuticals products, available at our office, are excellent. Applied energy treatments like Ulthera also can make skin firmer and tighter. So can fractionated and ablative lasers.

>> dr. richard moore,

MEDICAL DIRECTOR, THE LIFESTYLE CENTER The most popular age-defying procedures we offer are injectibles: Botox and dermal fillers. Because the sun causes us to lose collagen and connective tissue, the No. 1 product used daily should be sun block. The next product I recommend is a bio-serum made by NeuCutis. It contains growth factors that form a certain kind of collagen found in a baby’s skin. We’ve seen a reduction in wrinkles and improved skin texture in patients who use it. Men have less collagen loss than women. If you stimulate collagen production in men, they’re probably going to have a better response than women. Retinols are also good skin products. And some of the peptide-containing products have shown benefit as well. But products containing growth factors are the up-and-coming ones. The best skin-tightening device is the Venus Freeze. Most treatments that involve tightening and lifting the skin result in a lot of pain or discomfort, but Venus Freeze doesn’t.

like mother...like daughter! Mother JANE | age 53 | lost 60lbs in 4 months†

Daughter MEGAN | age 32 | lost 40lbs in 3 months†

I started my weight loss program on November 7, 2012 after many attempts at other methods. This was the easiest I’ve tried with the greatest success. I lost 60 pounds in less than 4 months and have maintained that for more than three months. I have lots of energy to play with my grandchildren now. My daughters have also had wonderful success with this program.

I have always exercised and been a runner, but had trouble losing weight. I started this diet on December 5, 2012 at 171 lbs. after watching my sister and mom’s success. By March 2013 I had reached my goal weight. My best half marathon time prior to the diet had been 2 hours and 20 minutes. I did the Go! St. Louis race in April 2013 and ran it in 1 hour and 59 minutes, my best time ever!

[ WHAT WE LOVE IN…] NATURAL PRODUCTS by dorothy weiner | photo by charles barnes

IF YOU’RE A STICKLER about what you put in your body through your mouth, it only makes sense to be concerned about what’s getting in through your skin. The skin is, after all, the body’s largest organ, and cosmetics are even less regulated than food. That could explain the rising interest in natural

beauty products. These days you can find everything from natural shampoo to natural face cream. And while the list of scary-sounding ingredients might still be long, a lot of those components are vitamins and enhancements found in nature rather than suspect chemicals made in a lab.

<< THE SOAP & PAPER FACTORY SHEA BUTTER HAND CREAM

$18

Considering how often you moisturize your hands, this is one item where natural ingredients really count. The Soap & Paper Factory hand cream uses no parabens, phthalates or petroleum and includes sandalwood, vetiver and oakmoss for a spicy, earthy scent. Added shea butter and vitamins should keep hands well-hydrated.

<< SHAMPOOLIO ORGANICS VOLUMIZING SPRAY

$26

<< GABRIEL JOHN SECRET GARDEN COLLECTION NO. 7 GINGERED CLOVE & JASMINE SOY CANDLE

This brand is the creation of an Angelino with a vision (and an L.A. salon). Julio Mario Romano has developed a multistep system based on the home recipes used by his hippie mom in the ’60s. The ingredients are pure and simple: cane sugar, sea salt, camellia oil and aloe vera.

<< YON KA PARIS LOTION YON-KA FACIAL TONER

Not the standard ‘beauty product,’ a special candle can, however, make life a little more beautiful by infusing your surroundings with aromatherapy. And after all, you are inhaling its fumes, so pure soy candles are simply better. This boutique line is made in Chicago.

$41

The French line relies on lavender, geranium, rosemary, cypress and thyme in this refreshing, alcohol-free toner.

ASK THE EXPERTS

PIXIE CUT by marylyn simpson

This summer is all about the pixie cut. From Carey Mulligan’s playful pixie in The Great Gatsby to Anne Hathaway’s bold cropped ’do in Les Miserables, there’s a pixie cut to match every woman’s style. But before you jump into your hairdresser’s chair, knowing exactly what you want from a cut is key to achieving a look tailored to your style and personality. First, not all face shapes are created equal. Oval faces tend to carry pixie cuts better, according to Abby Bryan Culleton, hairstylist and owner of Abigail’s on DeMun. “Usually people who have oval faces have longer necks, and it shows that off. It really makes their features stand out,” she says. But that doesn’t mean pixies are reserved for the oval face. Modifying the pixie (or any haircut) to fit your individual aesthetic is easier than a lot of women realize. Not quite ready to chop it all off like Anne? Then create an illusion of length, like Michelle Williams’ pixie. And according to John Rodriguez, hairstylist and owner of Ethos Hair Salon, having the perfect pixie is all about balance. “The key to a good pixie cut, regardless if it’s on a tall or short person, is the balancing of the body and the person’s face. If they can achieve that balance then that pixie cut can fit on anybody,” he says. Regardless of face or personality, the pixie comes with its fair share of benefits. How many of us really have the time to spend 30 minutes a day on hair? Wash it, dry it and add your product of choice—no straightening or endless blow-drying with this cut. Once you’ve found a pixie that works for you, remember: have fun with it. It’s just hair, and it will grow out. And if you’re not completely sold on your cut, play with it, because pixies can be versatile. Grow out the sides, highlight it, or just wear it au natural—nothing says confidence like rocking a hairstyle with edge. “It’s a really fun look,” says Culleton. “I see hair all day long. To me, women with shorter hair exude confidence, and I think a lot of men feel the same way. I think it’s a very mysterious, sexy look.”

CORSICA

by dorothy weiner

ll I knew before landing in Corsica was that it had a connection to Napoleon. It is, indeed, the birthplace of the French emperor, but it is also possibly the prettiest stop of the eight ports I visited in the Mediterranean.

In fact, the Greeks named it Kalliste, which means ‘the beautiful,’ and the French call it Ile de Beaute. Still part of France (the Jesuits sold it to the French in 1769, the year Napoleon was born), Corsica is the third-largest Mediterranean island, 30 |

right after Sicily and Majorca. It has a gorgeous coastline of beaches and cliffs, and fully two-thirds of it is covered by mountains. Not surprising, it was formed through volcanic explosions, and its microclimates range from Mediterranean to Alpine. It’s certainly true that the island is steeped in reminders of its most famous native son, but there is also an incredible natural beauty about the place, as well as an interesting ambience arising from its blend of Italian and French cultures. The capitol city of

Ajaccio (a-ja-see-o) is the birthplace of Napoleon and the site of the Napoleon family crypt. The town was founded in 1492 and is charming, with a stunning cathedral; the art in its Musee Fesch boasts the best collection of Italian masters after the Louvre. To give an idea of how the Bonaparte name permeates the city’s heritage—and its current tourist attractions —both the cathedral and the museum have direct ties to the former Emperor of France. In the cathedral stands the marble font where Napoleon was baptized. The main altar, a massive mahogany

structure from Lucca, Italy, with four marble columns framing a Madonna and Child, was a gift to the city by Napoleon’s sister, Elisa Baciocchi. Rather plain on the outside— constructed of limestone painted a mango orange—inside the 16th- century church has massive oil paintings by Tintoretto’s son and Delacroix, among others. Its walls and ceilings are ornate and gilded in the baroque style. The Fesch Museum was originally the home of Napoleon’s uncle, Cardinal Joseph Fesch, who amassed a valuable collection of Italian art during Napoleon’s campaign there. The artwork is both religious and secular, all of it impressive. Adjacent to the museum is Chapelle Imperial,

STAY

[ the essentials ] LES MOUETTES HOTEL DEMEURE is an historic hotel close to the city center and all the Napoleon-centric attractions. The main house dates back to 1880, but it assumed its current incarnation in 1954, and notables like singer Maria Callas and novelist Marcel Pagnol have stayed here. Of course it has been updated, but still retains a 19thcentury charm in some if its appointments. Les Mouettes means The Gulls, and while there is no restaurant on site, daily breakfast is served on the terrace, and in-room continental breakfast service is available. So is limited wine service. This hotel is a member of both Circle des Grandes Maisons Corse and Chateaux & Hotels Collection. Prices start around 261 euros a night. SOFITEL GOLFE AJACCIO is a five-star resort with high-end amenities (no golf though; ‘golfe’ means ‘bay’). It is set on Ajaccio Bay, the charming waterfront, and boasts a thalassotherapy spa where marine products are used in treatments to remineralize the body. It has a fancy restaurant, Caroubier, and a separate bar. There are also lit tennis courts, a full gym and a Turkish bath, all available for guest use. Prices are about $350 a night and up.

PLAY

Do not miss AUSTERLITZ SQUARE, where stately palm trees lead up to a larger-thanlife statue of Napoleon at the top of a massive marble base inscribed with all of his conquests. It is an imposing sight that conveys the enormity of this man’s historical significance. THE CATHEDRALE, where Napoleon was baptized, is adorned by tromp-l’oeil frescoes and a high altar from Lucca, Italy (donated by Napoleon’s sister Eliza after he named her princess of Tuscany). It dates to the 16th century. Breathtaking is the MUSEE FESCH, adjacent to Chapelle Imperial, a museum that houses one of the finest collections of Italian masters outside Italy. You will be able to get up-close and personal with Botticellis in this collection amassed by Napoleon’s uncle, Cardinal Fesch. You can also tour the Little Corporal’s home on Place Marechal-Foch, where he was born on the second floor, Aug. 15, 1769. The rooms are appointed with reproductions, but it is still very interesting. Also very cool is the daily food market near the ferry port. It is colorful and quintessentially European, with sausages and cheese hanging in netting from the booths. This is a good place to grab authentic snacks, including chestnut beignets. And you should take a break from sightseeing to walk down the embankment stairs to the beach.

the family mausoleum built in 1857 by Napoleon’s nephew, Napoleon III, as the family tomb. Napoleon’s body, however, is buried in Les Invalides in Paris. Napoleon’s familial home, Casa Buonaparte, on nearby rue St-Charles, is open for touring. The four-story structure originally had no stairs, to make it harder for pirates to access, so residents used ladders to climb in and out. The Buonapartes lived on the second floor, which has been restored in the neoclassical Empire style, Napoleon’s favorite. Rumor has it, Napoleon’s mother, Letizia (known as Madame Mere), delivered him in the neighbors’ home, on the first floor, but went into labor while praying in the cathedral. In a city of beautiful statues, the most impressive must be the monument to Napoleon in Austerlitz Square, so named in honor of one of the Little Corporal’s 32 |

most important battles. The imposing bronze statue sits atop a granite slab with 51 stairs, one for each year of the master strategist’s life. Engraved into the sloping granite are all the places Napoleon conquered. The monument was inaugurated in 1938, in part as an anti-fascist gesture, since Mussolini laid claim to Corsica (the island had a very active Resistance movement). Until WWII, much of Ajaccio’s population still lived the shepherd lifestyle, and many the sailing one. Corsicans were among the crew during Columbus’ voyages, and some suspect Corsica was even the explorer’s birthplace. Interestingly, the word quarantine was thought to have originated from Corsica’s policy of isolating newly returned sailors for 40 days to avoid the spread of plagues. Quarante means 40 in French.

The island is known for pottery, as well as knives. Carved wood and bone objects are also indigenous, as well as preserved foods like charcuterie, dried herbs, cheeses, jams, wine and honey.

They had a citrusy dressing Parkway is fresh and innovative with a big open space (called a dining hall) and several open kitchens, each dedicated to a different type of food: pizza, sushi, grilled meats/fish, charcuterie, coffee, wine, etc. In the center of the large room is an oval-shaped bar with raw oysters at one end and sushi chefs busy at the other. During lunch, diners order the food they want directly from the appropriate station; at dinner, waiters come to the table. Menu items show originality in unusual pairings like caraway on roasted beets, cucumber puree on almond cake and slivers of jalapeno on top of sushi. Some work better than others. The Classic Caesar ($8.50) was traditional, with a large helping of crushed anchovy, and it went very well with the focaccia served gratis to the table with a yummy crushed tomato-olive oil relish. The Slow-roasted Market Beets ($8.50) was a generous serving of red and yellow chunky beets

and slivers of dried egg yolks in a hint of molecular gastronomy we would see again. On our first visit, the sushi was outstanding; the next time, it was a little less so. The Papasan ($16) is a delectable specialty roll with spicy snow crab, striped bass, avocado and cucumber topped by orange chili mayo and a sliver of jalapeno. Adding to the excitement is the lightly bubbled finish achieved by torching the roll with a hand flame. The creamy elements combine beautifully with the super spicy pepper. A finish of tobiko and ponzu add the salt and umami flavors. There are only four ‘big plates’ on the menu (salmon, scallops, skirt steak and chicken), but plenty of pizzas and pastas. We sampled the scallops ($23), three large, beautifully browned bivalves with excellent texture and sweet taste. They came on top of Israeli couscous and sauteed Swiss chard, all excellent. Then we also ordered the Spaghetti

SWEETBREADS | The thymus glands and pancreas of young animals (usually calf), considered a delicacy in many cultures. Usually sauteed, they have a creamy, almost sweet, flavor. TOBIKO | The brightly colored roe of the flying fish, which has crunchy texture and sweet taste. A common ingredient in Hawaiian and Japanese cuisine. CREME FRAICHE | Matured, thickened cream with a tangy, nutty flavor. It can be made by adding 2 tablespoons buttermilk to a cup of whipping cream in a glass container, and leaving at room temperature overnight.

alla Chittara ($12), ‘guitar string’ noodles topped with spicy crushed tomatoes and oil-toasted breadcrumbs—a simple dish that exemplifies cucina povera, or ‘poor kitchen,’ at its best. The Calabrian dish achieves intense flavors using only tomatoes, oil, chile peppers and breadcrumbs. The presentation could be improved, as the dishes look puny for the price in their small salad bowls. A starter of Buffalo Veal Sweetbreads ($13) was tasty—and nontraditional, with bits of the organ meat deep-fried and scattered around the plate like so many unrelated mounds. They came with a liberal pool of Frank’s Hot Sauce—great for dipping—and bleu cheese. Desserts had a definite nod to deconstructionism. Our Marshmallow Wild Rice Crispy Treats ($6) were dollops of house-made marshmallow sitting in chocolate sauce and coated with bits of toasted wild rice, torched by hand, imparting a burnt-toast quality. It was good, and I liked ending on a wacky note.

used to seeing. Instead of romantic partnership, this movie portrays the joys and jealousies of the bond most important in many of our lives: best friendship. Set in New York City’s dingy apartments, it follows 27-year-old Frances (Greta Gerwig), a wannabe dancer who’s devoted to her soulmate/roommate Sophie. It’s not a coming-of-age tale, because Frances has already come of age without growing up at all. Laugh-out-loud dialogue perfectly captures the rhythm of 20-something speech, and Frances’ many apartments serve as a clever organizing device. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? It’s irresistible! —R.K.

good sci-fi film as much as the next semi-closeted nerd, but the Enterprise crew never appealed to me the way lightsaber battles and Han Solo did. I have no idea where this latest installment ranks in the Star Trek pantheon. But for someone who just wants good action and some killer special effects, this movie satisfies. Seeing the inner workings of a massive starship—and the extreme attention to detail—in its full IMAX, 3-D glory is pretty impressive. Even more so when gravity gives out and all those pieces and parts splinter like twigs. It may not win any acting awards, but the story was engrossing and included enough humor to keep me on my toes. A solid summer blockbuster (despite the missing colon in the title). SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Unless you’re a die-hard fan, you can take or leave this one. But if you go, spring for the 3-D. —C.K.

COVER STORY

INNOVATIVE] CONCRETE

by catherine klene

CONCRETE HAS COME A LONG WAY FROM THE COLD, gray stuff on your garage floor. Just ask Mick Harris. The president of Innovative Concrete recently completed a 1,000-square-foot patio that evolves into elegant garden walls capped with polished seats—all made of concrete. Harris spent most of his professional life working in construction before he decided to launch his own residential and commercial concrete business in 2012. So far, Innovative Concrete has exceeded even his expectations, and he credits much of its success to the popularity of stamped concrete. This process gives surfaces the appearance of brick, stone or other interesting textures by pressing the concrete with a special stamp after it has been poured. Different colors and patterns can be combined to create elaborate patios, driveways and more. “Concrete gives you the look and appearance of a natural stone product without the cost of natural stone and without being restricted to the native stone in your area. Import can be very pricey,” Harris says. “We can mix and match colors, patterns and textures.” Dozens of color options exist, from slate gray to rust red. Harris prefers a dyeing process that mixes the color into the entire batch of wet concrete, rather than just adding it into the top layer after pouring. “Liquid integral concrete color is consistent from top to bottom,” he says. “If something gets chipped, you won’t get white spots ... The price is a little higher because of the mix, but what we save in labor

costs far outweighs the price of it.” Many clients also are attracted to concrete for its durability and its A RECENTLY COMPLETED CONCRETE PATIO WALL AND SEAT CAP. price. “Concrete is very PHOTO BY BILL BARRETT dense, like granite, but there is no maintenance like you would have with granite,” he says. “And the cost savings are considerable. We can keep our costs consistent at about $40 to $45 per square foot.” Sometimes updating a home’s look is as simple as a concrete stain. Harris and his team can cover an existing concrete surface with an overlay and then stain it a new color, revitalizing a driveway or floor. Other services include exposed aggregate, which buffs away the surface layer to reveal the texture of the rocks underneath. It is then polished and sealed, creating a unique, lustrous look ideal for countertops or accent flooring. But if a simple garage floor repair is all that’s needed, Harris says Innovative Concrete can take care of that, too. Maintenance, sealing, caulking and replacement of basic concrete surfaces are available for residential or commercial properties. “Whether a client wants something creative or just needs a repair, we have the resources available to make that project happen,” Harris says.

INNOVATIVE CONCRETE IS LOCATED AT 1620 IVY CHASE LANE. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT INNOVATIVE CONCRETE, CALL 636.529.1102 OR 314.324.4173 OR VISIT INNOVATIVECONCRETELLC.NET.

or more than a century, the elegant homes of Westminster Place have anchored their leafy neighborhood. Residents opened their doors to inquisitive guests for the 2013 Central West End Association House & Garden Tour May 17 through 19 and gave T&S an inside look.

Charm, .Urban c. 1902

Revival, .Eclectic c. 1905 St. Louis-made artwork fills this Georgian Revival house, home for 12 years to Melissa Sauter, her husband Matt and their two sons. Sauter describes their interior design as eclectic, incorporating a mixture of modern furniture with antiques found in the Central West End. They recently transformed the backyard, tearing down and rebuilding the carriage house as a mancave and installing an elaborate stone patio, outdoor kitchen, pergola and pool. “It’s meant for all the boys, so that Mom has the house to herself,” Sauter says. “It’s worked beautifully so far!” The couple designed the kitchen’s glass tile backsplash (pictured). “I figured out how many colors and different shapes I wanted,” she says. “We’d put the template on the dining room table, drink a bottle of wine and put the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle. One of our friends is a tiler, and he put it up one piece at a time.”

Shifting from the New Jersey suburbs to an urban block in St. Louis was a big transition for Joy Ellen Kauffman and her husband Michael. “We had never lived in an older home,” she says. “This was our first try at city living, that’s what drew us to this area.” The previous owner renovated this Georgian Revival house, but it has a few idiosyncrasies that require adjustment. “The stairs creak, and I know which floors roll,” Kauffman says. However, she continues, new suburban construction often lacks the details she loves in her current home, such as the beautiful crown molding, warm wood and original stained glass window. “It’s part of the charm of living in an older home,” she says. “It’s been lived in, and it’s interesting to think that other people have lived here. This has a lot more character.”

.Restored c.Romanesque , 1893 Updating this Richardsonian Romanesque house required restoration and renovation, according to owner Doug Koch, who purchased it nine years ago. “It having good bones, we thought we could make it what we wanted to make it,” he says. “Although there have been days you’re trying to fix something nobody knows how to fix, it can be a labor of love for that reason.” Original oak floors, pocket doors and radiators preserve the home’s historical flavor, but, Koch says, “The house is lived in, it’s not a museum piece.” He removed the butler’s pantry to open and modernize the kitchen, whose tin ceiling he repainted copper, and the adjacent ‘Louisiana room,’ whose name he believes may be related to its former use as a servants’ space.

Karma, .Artsyc. 1904 Terrie Robbins and her husband Arnie feel a deep connection to their home of 16 years. “The whole house has really good karma,” she says. “We love it and we think the house loves us. We feel fortunate that we have some time with it, and that it will someday move on to other loving owners.” Designed by Mauran, Russell & Garden, the residence has a twin on Portland Place that was built a year later. The gardens, which include zigzagging boxwoods, roses, herbs, hydrangeas and apple, magnolia and ginkgo trees, were featured in Better Homes and Gardens magazine and on the 2002 Missouri Botanical Garden tour. Artwork inside includes a large standing vase from Turkey (pictured), a Chihuly painting, glass sculptures by Jim McKelvey of Third Degree Glass Factory, and a painting by Chuck Connelly, the artist depicted in the Scorsese movie New York Stories.

.Antiquec. Showcase , 1899 The cheerful living room belies the state this Federal-style residence was in when Richelle Weisbrod and her husband Michael bought it 10 years ago. “We went down to the studs and replaced all the systems up to the street,” she says. They found a surprise under the living room wallpaper. “Somebody had drawn all over the walls, probably in the ’40s. There was Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse.” In her decorating, Weisbrod sought to balance historical integrity with personal significance. “I had a lot of antiques that were my mother’s and my grandmother’s,” she says. “It was a perfect showcase for so many of our beautiful things.” One such piece is the coffee table (pictured left), made from marble Weisbrod’s grandfather rescued from the Union Station men’s room in the 1940s. Fire pits extend your landscape well into the evening .

peachy keen]

Peach season has arrived. The sweet taste of a peach is one of the signature tastes of summer. Take advantage of the season and look for fresh-picked peaches at your local farmers markets or groceries. Thankfully, many supermarkets have seen the wisdom of carrying local fruits and vegetables, harvested fresh in their own areas.

KNOW YOUR TYPE

Peaches are divided into two categories describing whether the flesh comes away from the pit. Cling peaches are so named because the flesh clings to the pit, whereas the flesh of freestones tears away from it. If you can’t wait for that first summer peach, choose the cling variety. These peaches tend to ripen earlier in the season, making them some of the first you’ll see in the market. Freestone peaches ripen later and tend to be on the softer, juicer side.

STORING YOUR BOUNTY

For the best results, purchase peaches close to the day you want to enjoy them, as you’ll find peaches ripen quickly. They actually do best at room temperature on the kitchen counter, but they also can be stored in the refrigerator crisper for about five days.

10.15ct. Antique Serapi Room Rug, circa 1890

Look for a deep yellow to golden hue and red blush to the skin of yellow-flesh peaches. White-flesh peaches have a paler hue, with a pink blush to the skin. Don’t choose peaches with green around the stem—this means the peach isn’t ripe, and it won’t become sweeter as it changes color. Feel the fruit to determine firmness. Look for peaches with just a bit of give. Also, inspect the fruit for bruising, avoiding those peaches. Peaches also are one of those fruits you should choose based on fragrance. Smell the fruit near the stem. The stronger the scent, the riper it is.

Peach trees will do just fine in the St. Louis area as they’re best suited for zones 5 through 8. When choosing a tree, consider space limitations. For the home orchard, I recommend semi-dwarf and dwarf sizes. You’ll have plenty of fruit to enjoy, and harvesting is much easier than from standard-size trees. Peach trees are self-pollinating so you won’t need more than one tree, but I encourage you to plant a range of trees that produce fruit at different times, to prolong the growing season. P. listing price | $5.75 million listing agent | margie kubik of gladys manion real estate FIERY SUNSETS MAKE EVERY EVENING A SPECTACLE at 2271 Talon Court, where the Rubensteins have lived for the past five years. It’s the family’s third home in St. Albans. “I like the fact that it is a small community with a country club lifestyle and a private school for our children to attend,” Jeniffer Rubenstein says. The nearly 4-acre property’s most striking characteristic may be its position on a Missouri River bluff overlooking the town of Defiance PHOTOS BY STEVEN B. SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY and the rolling hills of wine country. “We think we have one of the nicest views in the state of Missouri,” Rubenstein says. “We get the most incredible sunsets.” Husband Mark agrees. “It looks like the river goes right underneath the home,” he says. “Every morning we wake up looking at the gorgeous view and looking at the Missouri River right beneath our home.” Rubenstein likens the house to a French chateau. “Most of the home is done out of stone and slate and hardwood,” she says. “We have a waterfall feature in the front of the house where you pull in.” Most rooms are decorated around something antique.

All six bedrooms are suites with their own bathrooms, and the master bathroom has a two-story shower and steam room. “You could definitely have a party in our shower,” she says. “Our kitchen is a chef’s kitchen: It has two dishwashers, and it’s wide and open.” A wine closet in the kitchen eliminates the need to run downstairs to search for the perfect bottle. The lower level of the three-story carriage house serves as storage space and a storm shelter, the middle level is a four-car garage, and the top floor is a onebedroom guest house. “Friends and family come and stay, and it reminds you of a little bed-and-breakfast,” she says. Inspired by an Irish pub, the home’s lower level is finished in hardwood and has a feature unique even for a town as sports-crazed as St. Louis. “We had a muralist in our house for 10 months, painting a picture of every Hall-of-Famer in the St. Louis Cardinals on the wall,” Rubenstein says. The home has gained some notoriety with local media, too, with Sauce magazine using her kitchen for a photo shoot of Gerard Craft cooking, and Great Day St. Louis doing a segment on the lower-level mural. Charity fundraisers also have made use of the space, as have lucky guests. “Our home is set up for entertaining,” Rubenstein says. “I’ve had some really incredible parties there— masquerade parties, weddings.” She’s even had horses and carriages wandering the grounds for an event. Looking to downsize, Rubenstein says they’ll miss their home, gated community and, of course, that view. “It’s great for family,” she says. “We’ve definitely utilized every part of our home.”

TOP BROKER/SALES ASSOCIATE Barbara Wulfing has done more than $500 million in sales since starting her career in 1973. The German-born dynamo, who’s been at Janet McAfee for 10 years, came here as a child and lived with her grandmother while attending school. She and her husband reside in Clayton and cherish visits from their two out-of-town daughters and three grandchildren. I was a stay-at-home mom whose kids were getting a little older. Real estate looked like something I could do part time. I sold $1 million worth of property my first year on the job. I can’t really tell you why; I surprised myself. When I first started working, my husband offered to pay my income taxes. He soon changed his tune! I will never forget my first sale. With shaking knees I called on a couple who lived in a south St. Louis apartment. I sold them their first home, off Spoede Road, for $43,000. It felt amazing, but I had a lot to learn. I wasn’t even sure if I filled out the contract correctly. My bosses said, ‘Don’t worry about that—just keep selling!’ My hobby is golf, though I don’t get to play as much as I like to. My favorite deal ever was helping to acquire the ground for the Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Mo. When people ask for the secret to my success, all I can say is I’m very persistent, and I’m willing to work all hours—nights, weekends, holidays and vacations. I listen to my clients. I rely on my many years of experience for creative solutions to problems. I also have an extremely knowledgeable associate in Pam Thuston, who’s also a broker, and a great back-up team at McAfee. And I owe a lot to my former boss, Jimmie Manion, on whom I can always rely for wise advice. He and I still partner on deals occasionally. This is a great business and it’s fun, but you’d better have a lot of time to devote to it. I don’t recommend it to people who have tiny children. Even if you have help and an understanding partner, it’s not easy. To unwind, I love the symphony, Opera Theatre and The Rep. I try to golf and ski whenever I can. I used to play tennis, but I quit. I can’t keep up with the young players. My workday seldom ends before 7 p.m. Luckily, my husband cooks. Otherwise, he would have starved to death by now!

HOMEWORK DEAR HOMEWORK, When we bought this 1978 traditional, two-story house six years ago, it was an ugly brown brick box. We’ve made quite a few changes, now it’s time to tackle the front entrance. The stamped concrete with brick edging is chipped and cracking, so it needs to AFTER go. We’ve had ideas, but can’t seem to choose the right one to give our traditional home an updated twist. We have considered adding a porch, removing the ‘wing walls,’ DEAR GET US ON THE RIGHT TRACK, You have made logical and impactful upgrades to your home. I think the painted replacing the front door and purchasing new windows. As it’s the first impression, brick has added a freshness that gives the house a late Georgian/Regency feel. we want it to be a great one! My first suggestion is that your landscaping needs a significant amount of ———GET US ON THE RIGHT TRACK evergreen planting to avoid a bare, washed-out feel during winter months. I would also remove the two dogwood trees near the entry, which will grow to hide a large portion of the handsome, symmetrical façade. More involved modifications might be to use replacement windows with more mullion divisions to feel more ‘period,’ and perhaps the addition of a prominent central gable to give the very long façade a sense of height. Finally, I would suggest moving your fountain to center on the front doors. This will reinforce the symmetry and importance of the main section of the façade. In the end, the house feels like a charming mini-mansion in the country. It already looks good, but with a few modifications, it could look great. BEFORE ———HOMEWORK

CREVE COEUR CREVE COEUR ICE ARENA >>

Whether you need to practice your triple Axel toe loops or work on letting go of the railing, Creve Coeur Ice Arena is West County’s go-to place for frosty fun. Kevin Whitworth, president of St. Louis Rockets Hockey Club and coach of his son’s team, remembers using the outdoor rink that preceded the arena and being among the first to skate in the new facility. “I remember playing there as a little guy,” he says. The Rockets, a youth league for kindergarten through high school, uses Creve Coeur Ice Arena from August through March. “During those months, the Rockets are at Creve Coeur probably seven days a week,” Whitworth says. Teams travel through the region to compete, making the arena a representation of the league. “It’s not just a rink to us, it’s part of our house,” Whitworth explains. “It’s not just a community rink, it’s a Midwest rink. There’s a lot of people who have been in from Chicago, Peoria, Michigan. We had the mayor come out one time; he was the official puck-dropper at center ice.” CREVE COEUR ICE ARENA The Creve Coeur Figure Skating Club also calls the facility home. Everyone else can get some ice during public skating hours and hockey passing-and-shooting workshops. The rink’s only drawback, according to Whitworth: “You gotta dodge the golf balls during the summer.”

LAKE SCHOOLHOUSE >>

Empty wooden desks in three neat rows fill Lake School’s only classroom. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln gaze down from portraits at the silent space, where children in eight different grades once gathered to study. From 1897 until 1925, families from the town of Lake, Mo., sent their little ones to learn in the white clapboard building, which was moved to its current location in Creve Coeur in the 1960s. LAKE SCHOOLHOUSE Chesterfield was once composed of several small historical towns, including Hog Hollow. During the last third of the 19th century, the town re-christened itself Lake, then constructed a community schoolhouse in 1897. According to tour guide Judy Dierberg, kids living within a 4-mile radius traveled on foot or horseback to attend. They had two recesses and a lunch break during their seven-hour school day, and put on annual Christmas and end-of-the-year programs. On Valentine’s Day, each girl made a box lunch to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, who got the privilege of enjoying his meal with its cook. Girls also made desserts for the autumn pie social. The schoolhouse closed in 1925, when a new, two-room brick school opened. A shop owner bought the building at auction and used it for storage behind his business. It was donated to Creve Coeur in 1966, restored by a mayoral committee and rededicated in 1968. An American flag with 45 stars stands at the front of the classroom between the water bucket and pot-bellied stove. A mannequin wears a dress once owned by a teacher from the period, while another one dons an eighth-grade graduation gown. Modern children love to visit the schoolhouse, a place they find both familiar and strange. “The main thing kids love is LAKE SCHOOLHOUSE to ring the old-fashioned school bell,” Dierberg says. MALCOLM TERRACE PARK

MALCOLM TERRACE PARK >>

Hoping to spot an eastern bluebird? Want to hear the drilling of a red-bellied woodpecker? Grab your binoculars and sit very still in Malcolm Terrace Park, reputed to be one of the best places around to bird-watch. Spring brings warblers, vireos and flycatchers to St. Louis, and some of these feathered friends flock to the 25 quiet acres off Moseley Road, south of Ladue Road. Birders can wind through the park on unpaved nature trails, or enjoy the peace at Serenity Grove, a thicket with a burbling rock creek. For those looking for a more social way to enjoy a sunny day, the unassuming park has a sand volleyball court, picnic pavilions and a playground.
