Jake Gerba of Finleyville took his bass guitar playing skills to the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) convention in Anaheim, California this past January. NAMM is the world's largest tradeshow for music products and pro audio in the industry and is attended by over 100,000 people each year. Gerba has made a name for himself through his Instagram account which has gained over 30,000 followers. One of those followers just happened to be the head of the Peavey Electronics Corporation, an industry leader in music gear and pro audio. Dr. Walter Weaver Memorial Chorale To be Held During Monongahela 250 Celebration Seeking Former Vocal Students of Dr. Walter E. "Buck" Weaver As part of the ‘Monongahela Area 250’ Celebration being held August 8-11, 2019, the four-day event will feature a concert tribute to the late Dr. Walter E. "Buck" Weaver Memorial. For five decades, Dr. Weaver gave private voice lessons, taught at the high school (Ringgold) level, collegiate level (CCAC) and led church choirs in Brownsville, Elizabeth and Monongahela. Dr. Weaver, affectionately called "Buck" in his hometown of Monongahela taught thousands of students over the decades. Former student Paul Spencer Adkins, opera singer who was a student of Dr. Weaver's, said, "He came out to show that singing was macho." Mr. Adkins was taught and mentored by Dr. Weaver and went on to sing professionally. Adkins' music is featured on several albums. As a tribute to Dr. Weaver who passed on in 2016, the organizers of the Monongahela Area 250 event are putting out a call to locate Dr. Dr. Walter E. On any given Tuesday you will find a group of young boys gathered in a building, nestled in the heart of Peters Township. Dressed in olive uniforms adorned with badges, this group has the unique distinction of being the first Trail Life USA troop in the area. After being affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America for 25 years and producing an impressive 67 Eagle Scouts, Troop 1393 made the decision to move to the more traditional, Christian based Trail Life USA last year. Sponsored by the Crossroads Church of Christ, led by Eric Rauscher and supported by a host of strong role models, the troop embodies the core values of Trail Life USA. Boys in the program earn badges and ranks but the true focus of the group is to instill character and leadership skills that will follow them into adulthood. Troop 1393 is an extremely active troop. The boys, ranging from K through 12, are enthusiastic about the activities in which they participate. These activities vary and include skiing, canoeing, hiking, fishing, caving, BMX riding, trips to Washington DC, Niagara Falls, iron chef contests, caroling at a local retirement home and of course camping just to mention a few. The 2019 Mousetrap car race was a recent event the troop held. It was wonderful to see such a positive and encouraging group. They enjoyed a fun-filled evening cheering each other on and making new friendships. Hosted by Shortbread City Designer Desserts, the free event was sold-out and included 70 vendors in nearly every available category. Vendors on hand, included Shortbread City, Avon, Ava Bella Baby, Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple, Earth and Stone, Wedding Ware, Paparazzi, Pink Zebra, Christina’s Cakes, Mary Kay, and many more.

West Newton Library Will Hold ‘Super Gift Basket’ Raffle Help support the West Newton Library during its 3rd Annual ‘Super Gift Basket’ Raffle event on Sunday March 24 at the Turkeytown Firehall. Cook Announces Free Onsite 2018 Property Tax/Rent Rebate Application Assistance Rep. Bud Cook’s (R-Washington/Fayette) district office staff will once again be available to provide FREE application assistance for the state’s 2018 Property Tax/Rent Rebate program at the following dates, times and locations: • Thursday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Donora Senior Center, 701 7th & Meldon, Donora, PA 15033. • Thursday, March 21, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Liberty Towers, 520 Liberty St., California, PA 15419. Eligible participants can receive a rebate of up to $650 based on their rent or property taxes paid in 2018. The program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians who are 65 years or older, widows and widowers 50 years or older, and those 18 years or older with disabilities. To be eligible, homeowners must earn less than $35,000 a year and renters less than $15,000 with half of Social Security income excluded. Certain supplemental rebates can boost homeowner rebates up to $975. The supplemental rebates are automatically calculated by the Department of Revenue for qualifying homeowners. Residents are reminded to provide all the necessary income, property tax or rental information required to process claims quickly and accurately. Applications are due by June 30. Cook also reminds residents that they need not pay a private entity for assistance in filing the forms. Washington County Farm Bureau Holding Annual Food Drive The Washington County Farm Bureau has kicked-off their annual ‘Food Drive’, benefiting your local food pantry of the Greater Washington County Food Bank. The organization that collects the most for the food drive, will receive either a monetary prize or some other form of incentive. Jefferson Hills Woman Leads Effort to Send Care Caddies to Veterans Jacklyn Girman of Jefferson Hills started ‘Care Caddy for a Veteran’ in 2016 in memory of her cousin, Army Sgt. George Mackulin. Jacklyn wanted to give back and show support to those that served our country, so she asked family and friends to sponsor a caddy by purchasing a bag from the company thirtyone, of which she is a consultant. Jacklyn used her commission from the sales to purchase toiletries and snacks to fill the caddies. When she started this endeavor, she sold and filled 70 caddies. This year the program grew bigger with Jacklyn selling 215 caddies. This year’s caddies were filled with the help of 45 people at the Floreffe Fire Hall. Family and friends were present along with the ‘Warriors of Chaos’ Veteran's Motorcycle Club, and Thomas Jefferson 9U travel baseball team and Thomas Jefferson 3rd grade metro basketball team. Jacklyn will drop off the Care Caddies to the VA Hospital and the Veterans Leadership Program where they will distribute to the veterans. She hopes to continue to grow this event each year, selling more caddies and having more people volunteer to participate in filling as well.

POP TABS FOR RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE - The Auxiliary from VFW Post 764 visited the Ronald McDonald House where they dropped off 125 pounds of Pop Tabs. Last year Ronald McDonald House made over $8,000 on those little tabs they collect.

BROWNIES FOR VETERANS - The Auxiliary from VFW Post 764 in McMurray, recently made over 400 brownies and delivered them to veterans at the VA Hospital in Oakland. The brownies were packaged 2 each in a Ziploc bags and passed out to all the veterans waiting in Hero's Hall.

DONORA HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND SMOG MUSEUM NEWS The Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum has announced the dates for their upcoming walking tours of Eldora Park and Cement City. Space is limited, so please contact the DHS and add your name to the RSVP list.

Eldora Park Walking Tours You’ve heard of Eldora Park before, but had no idea where it was. Now is your chance to satisfy your curiosity. The Donora Historical Society has scheduled their third annual Eldora Park Walking Tours for Saturday, March 30 and Saturday, April 6. Both tours will begin at 12:00 noon. These will be the only Eldora Park tours this year. The tour will start at the Smog Museum (595 McKean Avenue) with a photo and newspaper article presentation. The presenter will be Smog Museum curator and archivist Brian Charlton. The tour group will then drive three miles to the Eldora section of Carroll Township to conduct the walking tour. Eldora Park followed in the pattern of Kennywood, Luna, West View and dozens of other amusement parks across the United States. Located three miles west of Donora, Eldora Park opened in 1904 to an overwhelming throng of five thousand people. This tiny, out-of-the-way park was able to attract world renowned speakers and performers. The cost is $12 per person and you should allow two hours for the presentation and walking tour. Appropriate footwear is suggested due to potentially wet or muddy conditions on portions of the trail. Hiking or walking sticks are also encouraged. By Jill Runfola The Monongahela YMCA held a ‘Family Fun Night’ on Saturday, February 9 from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Activities included video games, dancing to upbeat music, arts and crafts, ping pong, swimming, and more. The program is a fun, relaxed event for all people, free for all members and $5 for nonmembers. “The program is run every month, from November to April, simply for families to come out and participate in the different activities,” said Angel Gullick, YMCA Program/Youth & Teen Director. “The purpose of the program is for the whole family to spend an evening together,” she added. Although, youth are still welcome to enjoy the events unaccompanied by an adult. Youth Volunteer Groups help to run the programs. Two teen leaders present on this night were David Weiner from Donora and Chloe Miller from Monessen. Belle Vernon Public Library Welcomes New Director The Belle Vernon Public Library has a new face behind the circulation desk, but not one new to libraries. Elina Filander began in midJanuary as the leader of library located in the North Belle Vernon borough building, her third time helming a Mon Valley library. “I had wonderful experiences at both Bentleyville and Monongahela,” said the new director. “But I wanted to work a little less about five years ago so I stepped away from fulltime work be a bookseller at the South Hills Village Barnes & Noble and do a few hours a week in the Children’s Room at Carnegie Library of McKeesport. I thought a hometown atmosphere made Belle Vernon sound just right.” Filander has already made some plans for future programs kicking off with a Preschool STEM-oriented Storytime beginning on March 5 at 1:00 p.m. “It’s going to feature a little science or math based activity each week along with stories, songs and crafts,” Filander explained. “People think of science as an older child’s area, but looking, sorting, and experimenting in the form of trying something and seeing what happens are all appropriate for younger kids.” The library will also be hosting a Westmoreland Library Network book discussion of the Lisa Genova novel Still Alice on April 24 with copies available to borrow earlier that month. “Nancy and Courtney, the veteran staff members have already given me some great ideas for other programs and services we can incorporate into our offering,” the director added. Carroll Twp. Police Chief To Receive Distinguished Citizen Award By Miranda Startare Carroll Township Board of Supervisors held its monthly meeting February 5 and announced that Chief of Police Paul Brand has been selected to receive a ‘Distinguished Citizen Award’ by the Boy Scouts of America Laurel Highlands Council.Chief Brand, who is well-respected in his community, was unanimously voted to receive the award to be given at the annual awards dinner on March 4 at 7:30 pm at the Monongahela Valley Hospital Anthony L. Lombardi Education and Conference Center. The awards dinner and fundraiser is open to the public. Chief Brand regularly supports the Scouts and attends the yearly event. The honor is well-deserved, according to Brand’s many colleagues and friends. Carroll Township Solicitor Herman Bigi, referring to his many encounters with officers throughout his career, described Chief Brand as “one of the best chiefs of police I’ve ever come across,” and “an exceptional police officer.” Also at the meeting, the Board approved the hiring of part-time police officer Jeffrey Toth, effective February 5. Additionally, the township will be advertising requests for proposals for the 2019 paving projects to include Hazelkirk, Orchard, and Greenridge. These larger paving projects must be completed by an outside company due to the scale of the projects, according to the supervisors.

Belle Vernon Council Addresses Vacant Positions, Roads and Upcoming Events By Jill Runfola The Belle Vernon Borough began their monthly council meeting on February 19, 2019 by stating the need to fill certain positions. Also, with the Spring and Summer approaching, the Belle Vernon recreation board was busy scheduling activities for the Mon Valley area. School crossing guard Nicole Bonacci will be resigning, and the district will need to fill the position. Cliff Gorski, Finance Committee, made a motion to advertise the opening that starts with the 2019-20 school year. In addition, council expressed the need to advertise for an auditor and said the Municipal Audit and Finance Report is due by April 1. The Mayor, Gerald Jackson added that it should be okay as long as they get the report completed in a timely manner. Mr. Rich Saxberg, Chief Council and V.P. Chairman, discussed obtaining 22 more tons of salt and 5 tons of patch for Belle Vernon area roads. He commented, “Water is coming out of places it has never come out of before, and we’re trying to keep it off the roads.” He also noted that we are about average for where we should be for salt this year and with the warmer weather there will be the need to patch roads. In other business, Rachel Wilson, BV Recreation Board Borough President, reported on some of the exciting events in store for the area. The festivities will start with an Annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 13. Other activities include a Fishing Tournament on June 15, and a ‘Bike Run’ in early July. A canoe event will be featured on July 13, and the second Tuesday in July is the city’s Kennywood Day.

New Eagle Borough Council listened to the concerns of a resident about extensive flooding on his property at the February 5 monthly meeting. Keith Richardson, a resident of Vine Street in the borough for 36 years, described the situation as a “pond” in his yard that is flooding his and some of his neighbors’ basements and properties. Richardson said that his Vine Street property has always had a flooding issue due to what he believes is spring water that local residents say was covered up many years ago. The flooding has increased in recent years, according to Richardson and his neighbors, creating saturated yards, with areas of smelly, stagnant water. Richardson stated that he has had to cut grass wearing rubber boots due to the conditions. Council listened to Richardson’s concerns and requests for a solution, such as a french drain to direct the water into the creek below the properties, and assured the residents that they will investigate the problem and decide on a solution for the issue.

Some Benefits Of Growing Older Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population (persons 65 years or older) numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great benefits to growing old. Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher selfesteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness. Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their ages. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane tickets and more. As men and women age, their social circles may begin to shrink. The health resource Aging Care says 43 percent of seniors have a persistent sense of loneliness. For many, dating is helping them find renewed companionship, selfconfidence and vigor. Despite the rush that one may feel when beginning a new relationship, it is important to put safety first. One of the key considerations is disease prevention. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that, between 2000 and 2008, there was a 45 percent increase in reported sexually transmitted diseases in Americans over the age of 40. Online dating may make seniors vulnerable to STDs. Many STDs go unrecognized and thusly untreated in the senior community. Education can help keep seniors safe. Doctors can inquire about sexual activity as they would with other age groups. Seniors should practice protected intimacy and get refresher courses on ‘safe sex’ education. Growing older may involve gray hair or wrinkling skin, but there are also many positive things associated with aging.

Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of them.

YOUR HEALTH MVH Offers a Multiphasic Blood Analysis Screening Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) will hold its semi-annual Multiphasic Blood Analysis Screening on Saturday, March 23, from 7 to 10 a.m. in the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center on the hospital campus. From one small blood sample, 36 individual tests will be performed that can detect diseases of the heart, liver, kidneys and circulatory system. At no additional cost, the screening will also include a full lipid profile. Other tests, including Hemoglobin A1C (blood test for diabetes), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), prostatic specific antigen (PSA), and Vitamin D will also be available for an additional cost. Participants will be asked to provide the full name and complete address of the physician to whom their test results will be sent. A 12-hour fasting period is required prior to testing. Persons on medication should consult their physicians. Certified medical professionals from the MVH laboratory will administer the testing. The procedure takes between 15 and 20 minutes. Light refreshments will be served afterwards. Parking is free for participants The analysis is open to the public with a cost of $30 per person. The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 26th annual banquet at The Georgetown Centre, 526 East Bruceton Road Pleasant Hills, PA on Friday, June 21, at 5:30 p.m. This year, seven new inductees will be welcomed into the mythical Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame conceived by sportswriters Floyd France and John Bunardzya. With the Class of 2019 the total number of inductees is now 255. The original Mon Valley Sports Writers Hall of Fame started in 1951 with the selection of Stan Musial and Patsy DeBerardinis Bert Rechichar. General Chairman of the Sports Hall of Fame, Steve Russell, called the selections “a representative class with a cross section of Mon Valley athletes who have honored their communities with their dedication to sports.” The MMVASHOF selection committee includes Chairman Brian Herman, Carl Crawley, Jr, Dale Hamer, Tom Jenkins, Bill Kubin, Randy Marino, Stan Milchovich (deceased), Steve Russell, Bill Hughes, Rob Harhai, Dr. Kevin Ryan and Dennis Stitch. The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame is one of 2,830 chapters of The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame made up of four geographical regions: Central, Eastern, Northern and Western. Organized with its inaugural induction class in 1963, the state ceremonial dinner rotates between four regions. The Mid Mon Valley chapter has inducted 23 members into the State Hall of Fame. REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR MEN'S CHURCH SOFTBALL LEAGUE Registration is open to teams, or individual players or a group of players wanting to play in the Men's Church Softball League of the South Hills. GASTROENTEROLOGY Q: I suffer from acid reflux and I have heard many bad things about the treatment options. What should I do?

A: Upwards of 26% of the population in the U.S. suffer from weekly acid reflux symptoms. These symptoms may include heartburn, regurgitation of gastric contents, difficulty swallowing, nausea, chest pain, cough, hoarseness and the sensation of a lump in the throat. Because of the prevalence of acid reflux, Dr. Mark Cedar Pittsburgh also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the Gastroenterology majority of patients usually end up on medications such as Associates antacids like Tums or stronger meds like Ranitidine (Zantac) or Omeprazole (Prilosec). These popular medications have generated many eye-catching headlines over the past several years and I will discuss this below. But first, we should understand the dangers of having uncontrolled acid reflux. Barrett’s esophagus is a chronic condition that I diagnose very commonly in patients with acid reflux. This occurs when the lining of the esophagus is replaced with specialized pre-cancerous cells, commonly in the lower third of the esophagus. Barrett’s occurs in 0.9 – 20 % of patients who suffer from GERD and typically does not produce any symptoms and is only discovered when a patient undergoes an upper endoscopy (EGD). An EGD is a 5-minute long painless exam performed by a Gastroenterologist where a thin flexible lighted scope is inserted over the tongue into the esophagus, stomach and upper intestine. Barrett’s can be seen in patients of any age, gender or race but is twice as common in Caucasian men with an average age of 55 years. Smoking, obesity and excessive alcohol use also increase the risk. I often find this disease in patients as young as their late teens or early twenties. The major concern in chronic reflux patients and Barrett’s is the potential for progression to esophageal cancer. Between 0.2 – 2% of patients per year with Barrett’s will develop cancer of the esophagus, known as adenocarcinoma. Typically, we recommend patients undergo EGD if they suffer from regular acid reflux symptoms, especially if they require medications to control these symptoms, and in any patients who have had even occasional reflux for 5 years or longer. Once a patient is diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus we educate them on following strict “antireflux precautions” which includes weight loss, limiting caffeine and alcohol, avoiding nicotine and late-evening snacking. All patients are started on a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) such as Omeprazole and undergo surveillance endoscopies with biopsies every one to three years. Occasionally, we find more advanced cells on biopsy known as dysplasia and this is treated with an endoscopic procedure called Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA). We do RFA in an outpatient setting during a regular EGD and is a drastic improvement over the past 15 years when prior to that the patient sometimes had to undergo surgical removal of the involved esophagus. The biggest danger of PPI therapy is their availability over the counter. Although convenient, they are often used inappropriately without seeking consultation with a physician. I end up stopping these meds nearly as often as I start them. My big concern in patients who have required long-term PPI therapy is they may be covering up symptoms of damage to the esophagus such as Barrett’s or cancer. In the past several years, concerns have been raised about side effects from chronic use of PPI medications such as dementia, osteoporosis, heart disease, vitamin and mineral malabsorption, kidney disease and interactions with other meds. All patients on PPI meds should discuss these potential side effects with their primary care physician or Gastroenterologist.

Mobile Lab Comes to MCRS as Part of STEM Education MCRS recently enjoyed a day-long visit from the Intermediate Unit 1 Mobile Fab Lab, a technical platform for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, workforce development, and business idea prototyping. Students had the opportunity to explore the entire engineering design process in authentic and real world contexts with tools that enabled them to go from concept to drawing, models to prototype, and redesign to final product. The IU1 Fab Labs gave students the tools to develop the practical and critical thinking skills they will need to be the inventors and innovators of our future. The lab serves as a motivational environment to encourage student engagement with technology.

Tanya, emigrated from England in 1991, resided in Finleyville for 22 years and now lives in South Park. Tanya has a communications, marketing, and sales background, and owns her own business, Gypsy Artistry. Monessen Native Receives School Nurse Excellence Award Angela Dastolfo, a graduate of Monessen High School, has been chosen as the recipient of the ‘School Nurse Excellence Award’ for the Southwestern Region of Pennsylvania for 2019. Her peers have nominated her for her outstanding service to the students and staff of the school she serves. Angela is a school nurse at Burrell High School and Middle school. The School Nurse Excellence Award will be presented to Angela on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at 6:00PM at the Penn State Conference Center, in State College, Pa. This award entitles Angela to be eligible for the Angela Dastolfo prestigious National Association of School Nurses 2020 Pennsylvania School Nurse of the Year Award. Angela is married to LeRoy Dastolfo, also a MHS graduate, and Chemical engineer at Alcoa. They have three children, Maria Barefoot of Johnstown, Christina Hromack of Pittsburgh , and Nicholas Dastolfo of Pittsburgh.

Slater Named to Masonic Leadership Post Right Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania S. Eugene Herritt has appointed Robert John Slater Jr., of Pittsburgh, Pa., the District Deputy Grand Master for Masonic District 47. Slater’s role is to support Masonic programs and policies, oversee operations of the 10 Masonic lodges within his district, counsel and advise members and arbitrate concerns. District 47 includes Bethel Park, Carnegie, Dravosburg, McKeesport, Oakdale, Pittsburgh and Pleasant Hills.
