Looking ahead to Scottsdale 2015: Post-1973 Ferrari

Looking ahead to Scottsdale 2015: Post-1973 Ferrari 5th January 2015

In our final look at cars due to cross the blocks at Scottsdale 2015, we consider the 15 entries in the post-1973 Ferrari sector, a market that has seen a growth in values of around 20 per cent in the last 12 months.

That increase has been due in no small part to constant demand for the F40 and 288 GTO. Bonhams sold one of the latter at its December London sale for the equivalent of $2.37m, so RM’s estimate of $1,900,000 - 2,400,000 is spot-on for its low-mileage example from 1984, formerly of the Matsuda Collection.

F40 prices can be all over the place, and very much dependent on condition, specification and mileage. RM, again, is offering the sole F40 at Scottsdale (pictured, top), a 1990 car delivered new to the U.S., with just 5000 miles on the clock now and having all-important Classiche certification.  It’s estimated at $1,200,000 - 1,500,000, while Monterey-week 2014 sales results show examples sold for $1.3m, $1.4m and $2.2m.

Right now, everyone wants a 365 Boxer, preferably in an outrageous colour. As a result, Gooding’s 1975 car (red, delivered new to Italy but spending most of its life in the U.S.) is estimated at $450,000 - 550,000. Bonhams has two 512 BBis – the best-driving but least-loved version – at $140,000 - 180,000 apiece. Both were to European spec when new then Federalised on import to North America. Of the two, the 1984 black-on-black one does it for us – but those prancing horse carpets are just going to have to go…

RM’s 512 BB carb car is red-on-black and estimated at $275,000 - 325,000.

Track-only FXX: A fabulous creation - with sometimes limited appeal

Selling racing or track-only cars at auction is a lottery, given the limited market as a result of the even more limited number of things you can do with them. Still, we’re sure RM and Gooding will give it a go with the 2005 FXX Evoluzione ($1,600,000 - 1,900,000 at RM) and 1990 641/2 F1 car ($800,000 - 1,100,000 at Gooding, ex-Mansell with Ferrari Classiche).

The good old Testarossa has come on somewhat to knock on the door of the BB, and Bonhams will ask $125,000 - 200,000 for its 1990, 171 miles from new example, with Gooding’s 1991 car at $110,000 - 140,000.

It’s interesting to see the addition of a more modern mid-engined Ferrari at some of these premier league sales. Into this category falls Gooding’s 2004 360 Challenge Stradale ($200,000 - 230,000) and Bonhams’ 1984 Ferrari 308 GTSi QV, a rather attractive Prugna Metallic/Beige hide, ‘No Reserve’ car for $75,000 - 100,000.
