Abstract
During the service life of an airplane, the achievement of 1 million flown hours is considered a major milestone that has to be celebrated. In this article, this milestone will be celebrated for an iconic airplane that is unique in its revolutionary configuration the three-lifting-surface concept, combined with the pushing propeller configuration. It will be shown how the three-lifting-surface concept works, how this feature has an impact on aircraft drag reduction and how this positively affects speed performance and fuel consumption. Detail of the airframe design and manufacturing assembly will also be provided as these are a critical issue to maintain tight tolerances to guarantee the accomplishment of target aerodynamic design requirements.

The author wishes to thank all the engineers, pilots, employees and workers who have hardly worked among the years on the P.180 program of former Rinaldo Piaggio Company and then of Piaggio Aero Industries Company. Some of them passed away, some others are retired. Without their contribution, this major achievement of 1 Million Flown Hours would have not been possible. Moreover, the author wishes to thank all the people of the today Design Office Department and of all other Piaggio Aerospace Departments who have taken up the baton of this enormous legacy and are still engaged in a day-by-day continuous effort of further improving the aircraft and continuing the Company operations.
