Abstract

Slate is related to orogenic belts and occurs within all large mountain chains like the Caledonian- and Variscan orogenic belt as well as the Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belt. This section describes most of the world’s slate deposits with particular focus on Europe, Northern America and Eurasia. The term Eurasia comprises Russia, Ukraine and Georgia and is used to separate these deposits geographically from those in the Far East as well as from India and Nepal. The latter are not included since no reliable data and information were available to the author so that this remains as a future task. Due to the different sedimentological environments and tectonic positions during mountain building, distinct slate types evolved. The chapter aims to describe the regional geology always in respect to the specific slate and to its usage and not solely as a geological phenomenon. It comprises a brief introduction of the mining history of the single slate deposit, the geological setting as well as properties and products. The accompanying photographs give the reader an impression of the appearance of the slate as dimension stone.
