Hi everyone,

I was out flea market hunting today and came across this Waltham with a very uncommon damaskeening pattern. I know that this is a rare run, but I can't seem to find much information about it online. Anyone have anything to share?

From one run of 75 total, 21j, model 1892, American Watch Co grade, ca 1900.

Refer to post #15 in the following:

The only thing I don’t understand, given that this is a very limited, 1 run of AWCo grade model 1892, is why the plain, grey, star wheel in the regulator.

Can you post a picture of the dial?

I believe you have a special watch!

Wild. I've never seen one like that before, with the markings or the damaskeening. An old list that was compiled by Kent Singer (IIRC) back in 2001, shows a run of 19J movements that are marked "Waltham Standard". The known examples stop at *625. Dang interesting watch. Did you buy it? If so, congrat's.

Great find! In total I’ve probably seen around 12 or so of these and I believe Waltham made two runs of 21 jewel Model 1892 with this script A.W.W.Co. Waltham Mass signature and swirl damaskeen, total combined production of 125 and found in serial ranges 7902901 to 7902950 and 10099626 to 10099700.

Fred,

I believe the OP's watch has an HM Jacobsen Dial. I believe I have seen this dial on at least one or two others from this run. Is this what you have seen and do you think they may all have been made for Jacobsen? We do know that Waltham supplied special watches to Jacobsen.

Most I’ve seen have had ordinary Waltham-marked double sunk dials, but one I owned had private label dial for S.T. Little & Sons of Cumberland, MD. So I don’t think all made for one retailer, but may well have been intended as something different for just a limited number of retailers.

This has me wondering/postulating if special damaskeen patterns on Waltham movements may have been produced for particular jobbers rather than specific jewelers.

Another striking damaskeen pattern is seen on some other Walthams, apparently also sold by several different retailers - Waltham special order 12 size model 94
This off-center pattern also appears on a 16-size 1888 model - Post two (or more) related items including non-horological items (one must be an American PW)

Unfortunately Waltham did not keep records of orders by specific jobbers as Hamilton did.

Thanks Fred. You have the best memory of any watch-man I have ever met....and as you well know, I have met a few.

Sure thing. It's a private label for H.M. Jacobson & Son in Philadelphia.
Nice private label dial; I'm sure it'll look better once its cleaned up and 18-size hands are mounted,

Thanks for showing it,
Kent
