SAN ANTONIO - “It’s the greatest thing since sliced bread!”

That's what people have been saying since Oct. 8, 1929 in San Antonio when Butter Krust bread began selling sliced loaves.

William Louis and Emma Frances Solcher Richter opened the first Richter's Bakery in downtown San Antonio in 1882.

In 1912, W.L. Richter expanded business again when he bought the Butter Krust franchise. Eventually, a modern plant had to be built to accommodate increased demand. By 1920, Richter had built another plant across the street, which was able to produce 110,000 to 150,000 loaves a day.

The Richter Bakery would sell the traditional unsliced loaves, along with the sliced bread, which became an instant hit with San Antonians. This was just a little over a year that the the first automatically sliced commercial loaves were produced on July 6, 1928, in Chillicothe, Missouri.
