General Year Information – 1967 Pontiac Mid-Size Cars

The introduction of the Firebird ponycar and the impending body style changes for 1968 held the line to only minor styling and unseen improvements. All Tempests were mildly face-lifted with grille and rear panel treatments varying by series. It was a quiet year for the mid-sized Pontiac, though GTO performance took a step up with more true horsepower under the hood.

GTO received an improved new V-8 at 400 CID with improved cylinder heads. Tri-Power was no longer available, replaced with the Quadra-Jet 4-barrel. This was highly disapproved by Pontiac faithful. New this year was an “economy” 2-barrel, regular fuel 255 HP 400 CID V-8 for the GTO.

There were five 400 CID V-8 choices available: 255 HP economy, 335 HP (manual transmission), 335 HP (auto transmission), 360 HP “HO”, and 360 HP “Ram Air”. Series 233: The base models had new molded plastic grille bars arranged vertically, in groups of four, with wide spaces between them. Three block-shaped tail-lamp lenses set into rectangular frames were seen. The Tempest name appeared behind the front wheel opening and the rear fender had three horizon tall slits on the side which housed side markers. All GM safety features were standard plus vinyl floor mats, cigar lighters, arm rests, heater and defroster, five blackwall tubeless tires and standard type steering wheel.

Series 235:  Standard equipment on Tempest Custom models included special interior trim, carpeting, Deluxe steering wheel and courtesy lamps on convertibles. There were no horizontal slits on the rear fender sides and the nameplate behind the front wheel opening carried Tempest Custom lettering. Upper belt line and wheel opening decor moldings were used.

SERIES 237 and 239: LeMans buyers received all Tempest Custom features plus carpeting, front foam seat cushions and lamps for the ash tray, cigar lighter and glove box. Two-door models had three vertical air slots on rear fenders and had a choice of bucket or notch back bench seats with arm rests. Four-door hardtops came with cloth and Morrokide trim and short, slanting chrome  slashes on the rear roof pillar. Other styles had all-Morrokide upholstery.

A special station wagon with wood-grained exterior paneling was added as the Series 239 Tempest Safari and was finished in LeMans level-trim and appointments.

SERIES 242:  The trim along the center grille divider now went from one side of the car to the other, with a dip around the center divider. The GTO V-shaped fender badges behind the front wheel opening were moved down to the stainless sill moldings. Like the Grand Prix, the GTO had twin pin stripes along the upper belt-line region. Body side accent moldings were slightly revised. Rectangular front grille parking lamps were still used in front and the taillights now took the form of four thin rectangles at each side.

All LeMans features were standard on the GTO plus unique walnut grain dash inserts, heavy-duty shocks, springs and stabilizer bars, Red Line or whitewall tires, dual exhausts and a 335 horse power four-barrel, 400 cubic inch V-8.

Five 400 CID V-8 engine choices were available: 255 HP, 335 HP (manual transmission), 335 HP (automatic transmission), 360 HP “HO”, and 360 HP “Ram Air”.
