General Year Information – 1968 Pontiac Mid-Size Cars
General Motors redesigned its A-body line for 1968, with more curvaceous, semi-fastback styling. The wheelbase was shortened to 112.0 inches on all two-door models with overall length reduced 5.9 inches and height reduced half an inch. Surprisingly overall weight was up about 75 lb, due mostly to added impact safety issues. Pontiac abandoned the familiar vertically stacked headlights in favor of a horizontal layout, but made hidden headlights available on GTOs at extra cost and was a popular option.
The 230 CID overhead cam I-6 was enlarged to 250 CID with horsepower ratings unchanged. The 326 CID V-8 was replaced by a new 350 CID V-8 with horsepower ratings of 250 with 2-barrel or 320 with 4-barrel carb.
A milestone was achieved in 1968 when an all-time high of 940,000 cars were produced. It was also the first time that sales of Pontiac mid-size, pony car and specialty models exceeded the sales of the traditional lines.
