General Year Information – 1969 Pontiac Mid-Size Cars

All mid-sized Pontiacs were mildly facellfted. Two-door hardtops and convertibles now had the front door vent windows removed. The ignition key was moved from the dashboard to the steering column, and the gauge faces were changed from steel blue to black. On the GTO, the rear quarter-panel mounted side marker lamps changed from a red lens shaped like the Pontiac “arrowhead” emblem to one shaped like the broad GTO badge. Front headrests were made standard equipment on all cars.

Cars with six-cylinder engines had “OHC-6” badges on the body sill moldings. The Sprint option was available for all six-cylinder Tempests, except station wagons.

The GTO Judge option was released in December. The GTO was surpassed in sales both by the Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 and the Plymouth Road Runner, but a solid 72,287 were sold during the 1969 model year, with 6,833 of them having the Judge package.

“The Judge” name came from “Here Come de Judge”, on the Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In TV show. The Judge was to be a low-cost GTO to compete with the Plymouth Road Runner, but the package was more expensive than a standard GTO as it included the Ram Air 400 engine & more. Offered only in Carousel Red, but other colors became available. See Judge Print Ads in our Collection HERE.

Ram Air IV replaced Ram Air II in 1969. All 1968–69 #9792506 Ram Air 400 blocks have 4-bolt mains. The Ram Air IV used the Ram Air II’s camshaft duration but lift was increased to 0.52″ with the use of 1.65 ratio rocker arms. The Ram Air IV heads had 1/8″ taller intake ports & larger intake port volume. The Ram Air IV also used an aluminum intake-manifold. A-body Ram Air IV production was 1563 units. See the 1969 AMA specifications Sheets HERE.

Series 233: Tempests had a very mild facelift. A new grille and taillight treatments were created. Two-door hardtops and convertibles now had ventless side windows. Standard equipment on base models included all GM safety features, carpets, Morrokide accented upholstery trims and the OHC I-6 were standard. “Tempest” in script was placed on the leading edge of front lenders.

Series 235:  This model was now called the Custom “S” series. The front fender carried this designation in script. Standard equipment Included all Tempest features plus all-Morroklde upholstery, concealed windshield wipers, dual horns, ignition buzzer and panel courtesy lamps on convertibles. Cars with six-cylinder engines had “OHC-6” badges on the lower body sill moldings. Small hub caps were standard with other wheel and wheel coverings optional.

Series 237: LeMans models had all Custom S equipment plus a 3.23:1 rear axle ratio as standard. Also included were a Deluxe three-spoke steering wheel, “pulse” (intermittent) wipers, an interior lamp package and several seating choices: two-door models were available with bucket or notch back seats, four-door hardtop buyers had a choice of bench or notch back seats with center arm rests. LeMans convertibles had power tops. “LeMans” in block lettering appeared on the front fender tips. LeMans models featured there were stainless metal window and wheel opening moldings.

Series 239: Safari wagons had wood-grained exterior paneling and, surprisingly, concealed headlamps “Safari” was placed on the fenders in script. The Safari was its own designation but usually included in the LeMans production as it was close to it that model in overall level of trim.

SERIES 242:  As usual, the GTO line was based on LeMans with additional standard equipment features including a 350 horsepower 400 CID V-8, dual exhausts, 3.55:1 rear axle ratio, heavy-duty clutch, three-speed manual transmission with floor shifter, Power-Flex cooling fan, sports type suspension with heavy duty springs and shock absorbers, redline wide oval tires, carpeting, Deluxe steering wheel, and choice of bucket or notch back seats.

Externally, a cross-hatched grille insert with horizontal divider bars appeared and hidden headlights were now standard. The “Endura” bumper remained. A “GTO” emblem was placed on the left-hand grille and on the right-hand side of deck lid, as well as behind the front wheel openings. Tail lamps were no longer completely surrounded by the bumper and the lenses had bright metal trim. Side marker lights were of a distinctive rectangular shape, instead of the triangular type used on other Tempests.

A special “The Judge” option was released on December 19, 1968. It included one of two available RAM AIR V-8s as standard equipment. Originally intended to be a lower price answer to the Plymouth Road Runner, that was nixed and it became a more expensive special offering.
