1960 Cadillac Facts, Figures, and Specifications

1960 Cadillacs exhibited a smoother , more subtle version of the styling introduced in 1959. This was the last year of the famous Eldorado high horsepower V-8.

General Year Information – 1960 Cadillac Facts

General changes to Cadillac for 1960 included a full-width grille; the elimination of pointed front bumper guards; increased restraint in the application of chrome trim; lower tailfins with oval shaped nacelles, which enclosed stacked taillights and backup lamps, and front fenders mounted directional indicator lamps.  Four-window (4W) and six-window (6W) sedans were offered again.

Technical highlights were comprised of finned rear drums, a vacuum operated automatic-releasing floor controlled parking brake and tubular X-frame construction.

Engine size and configurations remained the same as 1959: 325 horsepower for the standard power train and 345 for the triple 2-barrel Eldorado.

Car Life magazine selected the 1960 Cadillac as its “Best buy in the luxury field.” This was the last year for air suspension and for wraparound wind­shields, except on the Series 75 Fleetwood models. Contemporary road tests gas economy ratings for 1960 Cadillacs were approximately 14 miles per gallon at a steady 60 miles per hour.

The Cadillac Eldorado 390 CID would no longer sport the triple two-barrel intake manifold after 1960.  For this year. compression would remain at 10.5:1 and horsepower at 345.  See the 1960 Cadillac AMA Specification Sheets HERE.

Cadillac would drop air suspension after this year. The system was troublesome, hard to repair, and the cost discouraged most buyers.

Cadillac Series 6200:  . Series 6200 base models had plain fender skirts, thin three-quarter length body side spears and Cadillac crests and “Cadillac” lettering on short horizontal front fender bars mounted just behind the headlights. Four-window and six-window sedans were offered again. The 4 window featured a one-piece wraparound backlight and flat-top “Vista” roof, while the 6 window had a sloping rear window and roof line.

Standard equipment on 6200 models included power brakes; power steering; automatic transmission; dual backup lamps; windshield washers and dual speed wipers; wheel discs; outside rear view mirror and oil filter. Added extras on convertibles included power windows and Two-Way power seats.

Interiors were done in fawn, blue or gray “Cortina cord”, or tur­quoise, green, Persian Sand or black Caspian cloth with Florentine vinyl bolsters. Con­vertibles were upholstered in Florentine leather single or two-tone combinations or monochromatic Cardiff leather combinations.

Cadillac Series 6300:  Models in the DeVille sub-series were trimmed much like 6200s. but there was no bar medallion on the front fenders and special script DeVille nameplates appeared on the rear fenders. Standard equipment included all base model features plus power windows and Two-Way power seat. Interiors were done in Chadwick cloth or optional Cambray cloth and leather combinations.

Eldorado and Eldorado Brougham:  External variations on the Seville two-door hardtop and Biarritz convertible coupe was in bright body sill highlights that extended across the lower edge of fender skirts and “Eldorado” lettering on the sides of front fenders just behind the headlamps.

Standard equipment was the same as on 6300 models plus: heater, fog lamps, Eldorado engine: remote con­trol trunk lock, radio with antenna and rear speaker: power vent windows, Six-Way power seat, air suspension, electric door locks, license frames and five whitewall tires. A textured vinyl fabric top was offered on the Eldorado Seville and interior trim choice included cloth and leather combinations.

The Brougham continued as an Italian-bodied four-door hardtop with special “Brougham” nameplates above the grille. This model did not have “Eldorado” on front fenders or body sill highlights, but had a distinctive squared-off roof line with rear ventipanes – a precursor to 1961 styling motifs for the entire Cadillac line. A fin-like crease, called a “skeg”, ran from behind the front wheel opening to the rear of the car on the extreme lower body sides. There were special vertical crest medallions on the trailing edge of rear fenders. Cruise Control, a Guide-Matic headlight dimmer, air conditioning and E-Z-Eye glass were standard equipment.

Series 60 Special:  The Sixty Special Fleetwood sedan had the same standard equipment as the 6200 convertible and all 6300 models. This car was  distinguished by “Fleetwood” in script on the rear deck, nine vertical bright metal louvers on rear fenders, vertical crest medallions on front fenders and wide full-length bright metal sill underscores which extended to the fender skirts and lower rear quarter panels.

 

Series 75 Fleetwood: The long wheelbase sedan and limousine had auxiliary jump seats, high-headroom roof line, formal six-window styling, broad ribbed roof edge beauty panels and trim similar to 6200 Cadillacs. The limousine passenger compartment was trimmed in either Bradford cloth or Bedford cloth, both in combinations with wool. Florentine leather upholstery was used in the chauffeur’s compartment.

Standard equipment included all items found on the Sixty Special Fleetwood line.

Bore and stroke: 4.00″ x 3.875″.
Compression ratio: 10.5:1.
Horsepower: 325 @ 4800 RPM.
