General Year Information – 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Mid Size Car

The Chevelle was assembled at plants in Baltimore and Kansas City and a brand-new factory in Fremont, California. The car was styled with square looking lines in the Chevy II mold, but curved side window glass and an emphasis on width provided a distinctive look. Eleven models were available in two basic lines, called Chevelle ‘300’ and Chevelle Malibu, with the convertible exclusive to the Malibu line.

A Super Sport option was released for the Malibu line. Late in the model year, in response to the Pontiac GTO, the Corvette 327 L-76 365 HP V-8 was released. Only a few were built as pre-production and it is unknown how many survive. You can see the listing for this option in the 1964 Chevelle 327 CID AMA Specifications Sheets HERE.

Chevelle 300 models received a single body side spear molding at the belt line. V-8 cars received a stylized “V” on the front quarter pane just under spear. “Chevelle” was spelled out in block letters on the front fenders just aft of the headlights. On the rear fenders, just before the end was found a Chevrolet crest. There was no reveal molding surrounding the windows, however a chrome drip molding was placed above the doors and the front windshield and the rear window did have a stainless surround.  The rear fascia featured an elongated Chevrolet crest.

Interiors featured automatic interior lighting, armrests front and rear plus two handy rear ashtrays, color-keyed steering wheel with horn ring, foam cushioned front seat, automatic cigarette lighter and key-locking glove compartment. Chevelle 300s also had vinyl headlining, electric wind shield wipers and dual sun visors.

Malibu models received a single body side spear molding at the lower belt line that expanded enough for an insert, beginning 2/3 toward the rear. V-8 cars received a stylized “V” on the front quarter pane just under spear. “Chevelle” was spelled out in block letters on the front fenders just aft of the headlights. On the rear fenders, just before the end “Malibu” was spelled out in script just above the spear. There was no reveal molding surrounding the windows, however a chrome drip molding was placed above the doors and the front windshield and the rear window did have a stainless surround.  The rear fascia featured an elongated Chevrolet crest inset inside a chrome belt that covered the rear fascia between the tail lights..

Malibu received leather grain vinyl and fabric seating, with convertibles and wagons receiving all vinyl, automatic interior lighting, armrests front and rear plus two handy rear ashtrays, color-keyed steering wheel with horn ring, foam cushioned front seat, automatic cigarette lighter and key-locking glove compartment, as well as an  electric clock, lighted glove box and back-up lights.

The Super Sport option was available on the Malibu, however it was treated as as its own model. These cars had no lower belt trim, instead, there was a molding running along the full length of the upper body ridge and continuing along the rear fender edge, plus “SS” rear fender and rear panel badges and wheel covers specific to the model. Bucket front seats were part the Chevelle Malibu Super Sport package.

The interior was where the main SS distinction took place. Foam-cushioned front bucket seats and all vinyl throughout, special instrumentation including ammeter, oil pressure and water temperature gauges. Floor mounted straight-line shift lever for Powerglide equipped cars, and stick shift for 4-Speed transmission options. Also fitted were a DeLuxe steering wheel with bright horn ring, deep-twist carpeting. Electric clock and back-up lights were standard. If power steering were selected, a fast steering  ratio was used.

The 1964 Chevelle El Camino came in two trim levels: base which copied the 300 and Custom which emulated the Malibu. Each level copied the exterior and interior trim. Engine choices were as for all other Chevelles.

More information on the El Camino can be found in this Car Life magazine Road Test HERE.
