1964 Dodge Facts, Figures, and Specifications
For Dodge’s 50th anniversary, the Dodge Mid-Size line styling was smother and more cohesive than the previous year. The model lines did not change. It was a year of refinement.
1964 at Dodge – A New Look
Dodge styling was enhanced in this year. Significantly, the 426 CID V-8 was offered as a “Street” package. It was a larger RB block version of the Hi-Po 383. The 426 CID Hemi would arrive mid-year, supplanting the Ramcharger wedge.

General Year Information – 1964 Dodge Mid-Size Car
NOTE: The 1964 Dodge Dart and Polara are categorized in our Fact Sheets as a mid-size car due to its shorter 119 inch wheelbase. It was now called the “Standard Size Dodge”, versus the Series 880 that sat on a 122 inch wheelbase that it shared with the Chrysler Newport, Chrysler 300 and 300K. The 880 Line will be covered in its own Fact Sheet.
The Dodge Dart was a compact car and is not covered in this Fact Sheet.
Once gain – A New Look
For 1964, Dodges were totally restyled once again. It is considered to be one of the most attractive early 60s Dodges. Smooth styling was the keynote and every line seemed to flow into the next. The grille began as small chrome moldings around the outboard headlights, narrowed slightly at the inboard headlights and featured a vertical bar theme. From the windshield back, the 1964 Dodges shared bodies with their previous models, except at the “C” pillar of two-door hardtops, where it was wider at the top than at the bottom, much like the sister Plymouth models.
Historical
This was the Golden Anniversary year for Dodge – celebrating 50 years of production. “Anniversary Gold” (Code Z) paint was an option offered to celebrate the event.
The year 1964 was significant for Dodge for several reasons, mainly for the reputation the marque was gaining in the performance market. The awe some Ramcharger was setting records on the nation’s drag strips. Roger Lindamood, driving the incredible ‘Color Me Gone’ Dodge 330 two-door sedan took the NHRA Top Eliminator title at the Winter Nationals Drag Races that year. Ramcharger powered Dodges also garnered the top four positions at the Super Stock Invitationals in York, Pennsylvania, and a Ramcharger equipped rail dragster set a new national NHRA record for AA/D (unlimited displacement rail dragsters) of 190.26 miles per hour.
Meanwhile, in response to the heated competition in NASCAR, the Corporation introduced the famous 426 CID Hemi head V-8. These engines were available for competition use only, in Dodges and Plymouths. The “Hemi” immediately replaced the Ramcharger III as the engine to beat. Conservatively rated at 410 horsepower with a four-barrel or 425 horsepower with two-barrels, the actual output was more in the neighborhood of 500 or 550 horsepower respectively.

The 426 CID Ramcharger III V-8 replaced the Ramcharger 426 II. HP ratings were the same at 415 HP at 5600 RPM with 11.0 and 425 HP with 12.5 compression. Cast, equal length headers were a new feature as well as further improved cylinder heads. See the Dodge Ramcharger Brochure HERE.

A 426 CID Street Wedge block was made available beginning in 1964. It was directly related to the 383 CID single 4-barrel high performance V-8, but based on the high-deck “RB” block. Rated at 365 horsepower, it was immediately adopted by the buying public – a total of 6,359 Chrysler products were built with 426 cubic inch engines for model year 1964. Standard Equipment: triple tail lights, full carpeting, vinyl-covered sun visors, dual horns, back-up lights, full horn ring, foam padded front seat with fold-down center armrest, dome light, rear pillar lights on 2 door hardtop, oil pressure gauge, glove box lock, cigar lighter, turn signals, armrests – front and rear, individual ash receivers in both rear seat armrests.
This option Is offered only on the Polara convertible and 2-door hardtop models. Special “500” exterior trim, complete with medallions and special wheel covers. Inside: all-vinyl bucket seats, padded dash, center sports console that houses a special selector for Torqueflite automatic transmission or a floor-mounted shift lever for the 4-speed manual transmission when the car Is equipped with either option.
Standard Engines: Only V-8 engines were available. The 318 cubic-inch V8 was standard.
