1967 Buick Mid-Size Car Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1967 Buick Mid-Size Cars Facts

A rehash of the 1966 styling was distinguished by a new grille, and the body was slightly changed to reflect Buick moving upstream. Special and Special Deluxe still used the traditional stylized Ventiports at the rear top of the front fenders, while the Skylark did not.

All mid-size Buicks had . 1967 Skylarks included the Federally-mandated safety equipment as other U.S. market passenger cars, including a dual-circuit hydraulic brake system, energy-absorbing steering column and wheel, 4-way hazard flashers, shoulder belt mounting points for outboard front passengers, softer interior surfaces, and recessed controls on the instrument panel.

The Gran Sport featured Buick’s all new 400 CID big block, now designated “GS 400” to separate it from the new mini-muscle car the GS 340, powered by the venerable 340 CID engine, in its last year.

NOTE: The Buick Sportwagon, the extended wheelbase station wagon, is NOT part of this Fact Sheet.

The new 400 CID V-8 was a completely new engine, replacing the 1953-66 “Nailhead” V-8. (The senior series received a 430 CID version). It had a bore and stroke of 4.040″ x 3.90″ and was a completely modern design. More information on the 400-430 is available in the 1967 Buick Chassis Service Section 6C HERE.

The new GS-340  was the first GM “min-muscle car” powered by the venerable 340 CID V-8. The idea of the 340 was to give GS handling and feel along with a lower price and lower insurance too. To learn more about the GS-340, see the Buick GS 340-400 Brochure HERE.

Special Standard – The lowest-priced mid-size Buick had no bright trim, with the window surrounds plain. Standard equipment included heater and defroster, ash tray, directional signals, cigar lighter, Step-On parking brake, front and rear seat belts, front door operated courtesy light, upper instrument panel safety pad, outside rear view mirror, dual speed wipers and washer, padded sun visors, backup lamps and other mandated safety items. Vinyl and cloth upholstery was standard, while an all-vinyl interior was optional.

Models offered were 4-door and 2-door Sedans, and Station Wagon. Both the V-6 and 300 and 340 CID V-8s were available.

Special Deluxe –  The Special Deluxe was a slightly plusher Special, with bright wheelhouse moldings, full-length body side bright moldings, black-accented rear cove panel and bright metal window surrounds. “Special” in block letters appeared on the front fenders. Standard equipment was heater and defroster, ash tray, directional signals, cigar lighter, Step-On parking brake, front and rear seat belts, front door operated courtesy light, upper instrument panel safety pad, outside rear view mirror, dual speed wipers and washer, padded sun visors, backup lamps, plus a rear seat ash tray. DeLuxe steering wheel, dual side arm rests, full carpeting and dual horns. Interiors were cloth and vinyl or all-vinyl.

There were 3  models models in the Special Deluxe line: the 2-door  hardtop coupe 4-door Sedan and the Station Wagon, with the wagon only available in V-8 configuration.

Skylark – Skylark was Buick’s mid-size top line and its exterior distinction was shown by the fitment of rear fender skirts, a full-length lower body bright molding, simulated front fender vents, a ribbed rear cove panel and a grille with more horizontal bars. “Skylark” in script was placed on the rear quarters and Skylarks had no Ventiports. Cloth and vinyl trim with bench front seats were standard, except on the convertible, which was all-vinyl trimmed. All-vinyl was optional for other models and bucket seats with or without a console were also offered as an option.

The 300 and 340 CID V-8s were optional across the entire Skylark line.

GS-340. The GS-340 was a hybrid, actually numbered in the Special Deluxe V-8 series, but was trimmed as a GS. Broad Rally stripes and hood scoops were red, as was the lower deck molding. Two body colors, white or platinum mist, were offered. Specific GS-type front and rear shocks, springs and a large diameter stabilizer were included, as were 7.75 Rayon Cord tires on red 14 inch Rally-style wheels. Interiors were similar to the Special Deluxe 43400 Series.

NOTE: The California GS. sold only in that state, was a 43407 thin pillar Coupe trimmed like a GS-400 but having the Sepcial’s interior, but featuring the 340 CID V-8.  For more information, see a Car Life magazine test of this vehicle HERE.

GS-400. The high-performance Skylark now took its name from its new 400 CID V-8, trimming the longish “Gran Sport” moniker, likely in response to the GTO and 442 nameplates. Exterior appearance was subtly unique to the line with the use of twin hood scoops, Rally stripes and a Special grille. F70 x 14 Wide Oval red or white stripe tires were standard. Rear wheelhouses were open, unlike other Skylark models. Interiors were all-vinyl and standard equipment was the same as the Skylark Coupe, Convertible and Hardtop.
