General Year Information – 1969 Buick Mid-Size Cars Facts
The Buick Special Deluxe name was the last iteration of the “Special” name – to be dropped next year. Engine choices were almost identical to 1968, including the I-6 and 350 CID V-8. The GS 400 received the Stage 1 performance package as a factory installed option, though the Stage 2 package was still dealer installed.
New this year was the Turbo 350 Hydra-Matic transmission developed in conjunction with Chevrolet, but now available across all GM lines except Cadillac. It was utilized or available as an option on all engines under 400 CID. Significant was was installation of a column-mounted ignition key that locked the column – it was a theft deterrent.
NOTE: The Buick Sportwagon, the extended wheelbase station wagon, is NOT part of this Fact Sheet.

The Turbo Hydra-matic 350 was developed to replace the two-speed Super Turbine 300 and Powerglide transmissions. The 350 were manufactured by Buick and by Chevrolet, with the Buick version used by Oldsmobile and Pontiac. See the specs HERE.

Special Deluxe – The Special Deluxe for 1969 had a minimum of changes from the 1968 version. A trio of bright outlined Ventiports and bright housings for the side marker lamps were the most notable. “Special DeLuxe”, in script was on the rear fenders, and the grilles was changed. Among the standard features, with some mandated by new federal safety standards, were parking lamps, a left-hand outside rear view mirror and seat belts.
NOTE: The model 43327 coupe was built in California GS trim, with bright wheel house moldings, vinyl top with “GS” monograms on the roof quarters and a GS emblem on the deck lid. A functional hood scoop was included as well. The word “California” in script was placed on the rear fenders. All California GS coupes had vent windows. Production numbers were included with the Special DeLuxe coupe.
Skylark – The standard Skylark was reduced to a two model line for 1969. The Skylark featured a minimum of side trim, with a trio of leaning vertical bright bars on each front fender. “Skylark” in script appeared on the rear fenders. The grille had a horizontal division bar. Interiors were similar to the Special Deluxe.
California GS . See Special Deluxe. It has bright wheel house moldings, vinyl top with “GS” monograms on the roof quarters and a GS emblem on the deck lid. A functional hood scoop was included as well. The word “California” in script was placed on the rear fenders. All California GS coupes had vent windows. Production numbers were included with the Special DeLuxe coupe.
Skylark Custom – The Skylark Custom was the most upscale mid-size Buick It had better quality vinyl and cloth or all-vinyl interiors, a bright lower body molding and wheelhouse moldings. A chrome Sweepspear molding was optional and, at the front, a Buick emblem was centered in the grille.
GS-350. The GS 350 only was available as a Sport Coupe. Once again the GS 350 combined the Skylark’s Custom’s interior accoutrements with a GS 400 exterior. Front fenders carried neither Ventiports or vents this year, but the wheelhouse, moldings were as in 1968. A GS 350 plaque was placed on the center of the deck lid, with GS 350 monograms on the grille and door panels. All-vinyl, foam-padded seats were standard, with the bucket seats an option. Upper level ventilation, without vent windows, was a distinctive feature.
GS-400. Much like the GS 350, the most potent Buick had “400” in numerals on the hood scoop and rear quarters. A DeLuxe steering wheel was standard, along with foam-padded seats, ash tray light, glove box light and upper interior light. Interiors were all-vinyl, with a bench front seat standard and buckets optional. The Stage 1 performance package was now a factory installed option.
