Always Looking – 1975 Alfa Romeo Alfetta Berlina

Here at RustyButTrusty, the Alfetta is like one of those dishes that your mother cooked on a regular basis – it probably comes around a little too often, but there’s still some joy in the familiarity, and perhaps some surprises in the little variations based on what ingredients were handy. Among the vast legions of North American Alfetta fans, there’s one version that’s like catnip, and that’s the 1975 models, which is smog-exempt in more states than any other year. There’s also the charm of the earlier hooded headlights, protruding chrome door handles, and triple-square tail lights, and a wooden dash inside. You can find this 1975 Alfa Romeo Alfetta Berlina for sale with bidding at $1612, reserve met, and 2 days left to go in Hinckley, OH.

This color looks to be AR213 verde olivia metallizzato (olive green metallic) in color, and the body is said to have very little rust, limited to the door bottoms and quarters. For an Ohio car, it’s in excellent condition, and in fact, some of the underbody shots suggest this car has never been out in very humid weather. In fact, this car looks an awful lot like a California car that nearly became a member of the RustyButTrusty fleet over 15 years ago.

What a nice little car – it’s a shame Alfa had a reputation for unreliability and of course rapid oxidation, otherwise this would have been a serious contender against cars like the BMW 2002 and 320i. This car has a new clutch and is said to run and drive well, but has rusty brake discs and needs a tailpipe. There’s a lot to like here, down to the functioning period radio, excellent rust-free floor pan and interior with minimal sun damage.

Speaking of which, here it is. It’s surprising to see one of these with non-split, original interior materials. You’ll want to do as much preventive stitching as possible to mitigate the risk of torn/split seams. The 3-spoke, dished wheel and wooden dash are classic sporting cues, and the seats are no doubt comfortable and supportive at the same time.

It’s said to have 55,110 miles, and while the condition of the car bears this out, count on 155K and focus more on the overall state than a specific number. Any maintenance history would not only help assess the condition of the car, but would be interesting to review to help understand how a car like this could be in such nice shape. Which of the Alfettisti will bring this one home?
