• A banded Chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz), infused with iron and aluminum; the twisting, turning banded patterns  resemble finely woven lace
• Believed to have formed during the Cretaceous Period 65-90 million years ago
• This stone was believed to have been prized by the ancient indigenous Mexican peoples as a powerful amulet
• Agate was given its name by the Greek philosopher and naturalist, Theophrastus, who discovered the stone along the shore of the Dirillo River in Sicily which in Ancient Greece was known as the Achates / Ἀχάτης

• The name Dendritic comes from the Greek "dendron" δενδρον, meaning tree, due to the resemblence of the dendrites to the branches of a tree.
• Dendrites form when water carrying high concentrations of maganese and iron oxides move through open fissures or cracks within a crystal. Under the right conditions these elements are deposited within and create branching tree like patterns.

• A type of chalcedony - a microcrystalline variety of quartz, this stone is geologically similar to dendritic agate and moss agate differing only in visual appearance
• Earliest folk traditions used tree agate, moss agate, and dendritic agate interchangeably
• Tree agate is typically an opaque, whitish variety of dendritic agate with green, brown, or black tree-like inclusions
• Inclusions in tree agate frequently consist of iron or manganese oxides or chlorite
• Primary sources of tree agate are Brazil, India, and Uruguay

• Due to its trace lead content, do not use for gem elixirs or ingest in any form!  Although not typically absorbable through skin, mildly acidic water or solutions can dissolve the lead and prove toxic if taken internally over time
• Named for the Amazon River, this mineral has never been found there— the closest sources: regions in Brazil and Peru, yet not found even within the Amazon Rainforest
• A potassium feldspar (microcline), its color originally believed to be caused by copper, more recently has been found to be the result of trace amounts of lead, rubidium, thallium, divalent iron, and water
• As early as 5200 BCE, cultures in Northern Africa including Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Indus Valley had been cutting this stone for use in beads and other carvings
• Found in King Tutankhamun’s tomb, including as a scarab ring, as well as inlaid in his famed funerary mask

• A naturally occuring type of quartz crystal, ametrine is a combination of amethyst and citrine with distinct areas of yellow and purple.
• The vast majority of genuine ametrine comes from the Anahi mine in eastern Bolivia, so much so that the other name for this crystal is bolivianite.

• The variety of Bloodstone found in South Africa has typically larger inclusion patches of iron oxide (Hematite and/or Pyrite) and features grayish to white Chalcedony in addition to the green.
• Sometimes called, Seftonite (a moss green variety of Chalcedony) / and erroneously Setonite (due to a misspelling that went viral);  it is also known as Vulcan Jasper, named for the Roman blacksmith god of the forge, fire, and volcanos.
• Bloodstone from India is also known by its old-world name, Heliotrope (from Greek ἥλιος, hḗlios “Sun”, τρέπειν, trépein “to turn”) as it was believed that if placed in water while reflecting the sun, the color of the stone would turn blood-red; this variety is the classic Bloodstone: dark green Chalcedony with small spots of red iron oxide.

• Asterism or the star-like effect in some stones, is caused by a dense network of fine inclusions aligned with the gem’s crystal structure— when properly cut, it will reflect/refract light in the form of a 6-pointed star

How to care for your Shungite:
This stone is extremely fragile.

• Do not expose to liquids, oils, solvents, or salts— freshwater only is okay.

• Primary source of this stone is the Zazhoginsky mine in Karelia, Russia; typically contains 30% carbon, 57% silicates, and 13% other materials
• Russian Tsar Peter the Great, ruled from 1682 to 1725, was well aware of the benefits of this stone and was known to use it for its purification and health benefits; used by the Russian army as well as in health spas and therapeutic treatments
• A sacred spring near Lake Onega in Karelia was considered sacred and long revered for its “Living Waters” known for its healing properties; when investigated further, it was found the waters flowed forth from a bed of concentrated Shungite
• Lake Onega, from prehistoric times, was found to be an important location where people flocked over the ages for its treasured waters— unusually pure; the lake bed in that region was found to be embedded with Shungite deposits 

There are 3 basic types of Shungite:

• (Type III) Regular Shungite or Shungite Rock is typically classified as having between 30% - 50% carbon.  Grayish-Black in color, easily shaped and carved.
• (Type II) Black Shungite - typically contains between 50% - 80% carbon.  A higher carbon content gives greater beneficial effects in purification, filtering, and protection.  Black in color, this most often found type of Shungite is frequently shaped and carved.  Petrovsky Shungite, a higher grade of Type II Shungite, named for Peter the Great, is typically 70% - 80% carbon.
• (Type I) Elite Shungite/Silver Shungite also known as Noble Shungite - 90% or greater carbon content.  Less than 1% of all found Shungite falls into this category.  Very brittle and fragile, it is never shaped or carved and almost always used in its raw form.  The most prized of this variety is 98% or greater in carbon content and exhibits a silvery metallic luster on its surface.
