Tottenham Hotspur have been knocked out of the Europa League after losing 3-0 away against Dinamo Zagreb.

Spurs went into Thursday’s second leg of the last-16 of the competition with a two-goal advantage.

But they conceded twice in 90 minutes and again in extra-time to exit the competition 3-2 on aggregate.

Tottenham and Mourinho's season has gone from title charge to humiliation in just 102 days

What happened?

The first half remained goalless with few chances to speak of, but the game ignited in the 62nd minute thanks to a fantastic long-range strike from Dinamo’s Mislav Orsic.

Dinamo pushed for the goal that would draw them level in the tie and were rewarded in the 82nd minute as Orsic grabbed his second, forcing extra-time.

Harry Kane squandered a good chance to net Spurs a priceless away goal in the first-half of extra-time, before Orsic spectacularly completed his hat-trick in the 106th minute with a fine solo effort.

Kane had another good chance late in the game, but Dominik Livakovic denied him superbly as Dinamo held on for a memorable victory.

How damaging a defeat is this for Spurs?

Jack Pitt-Brooke: This defeat makes Spurs’ path to a successful season even more narrow. Their only options now are either to win the League Cup final against Manchester City or to climb back up into the top four, making up the six-point gap to Chelsea, with a game in hand.

Without either of those it is hard to see how the club could argue that it is progressing. Moreover, elimination from the Europa League makes qualifying for Europe next year harder, which given the money it delivers, and the £1.2 billion stadium, would be a serious dent to the club’s finances.
