When it comes to hunting for cars, timing can be everything. I’ve had a few missed opportunities over the years, but last November, when I walked into Bondie’s Antiques to see what could be found, I was right on time. One of the vendors had just put out a shelf full of ’80s Hot Wheels in good shape and priced very reasonably.

How about a 1980 Hot Wheels Hi-Rakers ’40s Woodie for $1.50? This is the first release of the ’40s Woodie with the smooth wood panels and it’s in pretty good shape, with only a few scuffs and scratches.

The Hot Wheels Hi-Rakers Series were cars with an adjustable rear axle so you could raise them up for an aggressive rake. (I’m hesitant to raise this one up, as those plastic parts can be brittle on these aging cars.) Other Hi-Rakers in my collection include the 1980 3-Window ’34, the 1980 Dodge D-50, the 1980 Split Window ’63, the 1980 Turbo Wedge, the 1982 Vette Van, and the metalflake red 3-Window ’34 from 1983.

Other Hot Wheels ’40s Woodies in my collection include an orange Hi-Rakers model from 1981, a metalflake blue variation from the 1983 Real Riders series, a yellow version from 1987 with a regular base, the 1998 30th Anniversary reproduction of the first-casting and the 1993 Collector #217.

The Hot Wheels ’40s Woodie, based on the 1940 Ford Deluxe Woody Wagon, was first released in the 1980 Hi-Rakers series. This very popular casting has been produced in about 75 variations, most recently included in the 2015 HW Road Trippin’ series. This metalflake blue model with gray-hub Real Riders – as well as the Hi-Rakers base – is from 1983 and is another nice score from my Wichita eBay friend.

The other Hot Wheels ’40s Woodies in my collection are the orange Hi-Rakers model from 1981, the yellow version from 1987 with a regular base, the 1998 30th Anniversary reproduction of the first-casting and the 1993 Collector #217.

Other Hot Wheels Real Riders in my collection include the 1983 Super Scraper, the 1983 Turbo Streak, the 1983 Bywayman, the ’40s Ford 2-Door and Malibu Gran Prix from 1983, the 1984 Baja Breaker, the 1984 Dodge Rampage, the 1985 Bronco 4-Wheeler, the 1986 Rescue Ranger, the 1987 Baja Bug, the 1990 California Customs Custom Corvette, and the 1995 Mercedes Benz Unimog.

The Hot Wheels ’40s Woodie was first released in the 1980 Hi-Rakers series and has been produced in about 75 variations, most recently included in the 2015 HW Road Trippin’ series. This black and turquoise Collector #217 from 1993 is one of the recent St. Louis antique store finds from my friend, Chris.

The other Hot Wheels ’40s Woodies in my collection are the orange Hi-Rakers model from 1981, the yellow version from 1987 with a regular base and the 1998 30th Anniversary reproduction of the first-casting.

Though there are about 75 variations of the Hot Wheels ’40s Woodie, I only have three different examples in my collection. The casting, which is based on the 1940 Ford Deluxe Woody Wagon, was first released in the 1980 Hi-Rakers series, so early versions have the adjustable rear wheels. This orange model with textured wood panels from the 1981 Hi-Rakers series is one of the cars I picked up in my recent eBay splurge.

The other Hot Wheels ’40s Woodies in my collection are the yellow version from 1987 with a regular base and the 1998 30th Anniversary reproduction of the first-casting.

Other Hi-Rakers in my collection include the 1980 3-Window ’34, the 1980 Dodge D-50, the 1980 Split Window ’63, the 1980 Turbo Wedge, the 1982 Vette Van, and the metalflake red 3-Window ’34 from 1983.

Here’s a little tip for bidding on cars on eBay. When you find a car you really want to bid on, it’s a good idea to check out the other items from the same seller. Usually, if a seller has one nice car, they’ll have more. And most sellers offer combined shipping, so rather than paying shipping for each individual item, you’ll only pay one shipping charge. It’s a good way to save a few bucks in the long run.

The car that first caught my eye from this seller was the Tricar X8. This pointy three-wheeler which was designed by Larry Wood might have been inspired by the Blue Flame, a rocket powered car that established the world land speed record of 622.407 mph in 1970. The Tricar X8 saw its first casting in 1980, but this red version with blue and white tampo was a Kellogg’s cereal promotional car from 1985.

When I searched the seller’s other items, I was pleased to find a couple more nice blackwalls. The ’56 Hi-Tail Hauler came out in 1977 and features two plastic motorcycles in the back. This metalflake blue version of the Ford F-150 is a variation from 1982.

The ’40s Woodie was released in 1980 as one of the Hi-Rakers, cars which had adjustable rear axles. This casting continues to be a popular model and many variations have come out over the years. This yellow version with a black interior and small rear blackwalls is not a Hi-Raker and is from 1987.
