In the last decade, I got this photo of Evening Star and B. No. 250 and others like it.  Little did I know at that time

 . . . what I had dismissed as scuttlebutt, that things were not sustainable.

Enter RCM 250.  Some of you know the connection, the one that’s been there for a few years already now.

I’m not sure I understand the substance of the change(s) announced in articles like this and this.

 

The transition was gradual, but 

 

what’s on the surface looks good.

Winter dawns and dusks can be the best, like this one creating golden water for Miss New York.

The 2000 Brooklyn had Vane livery then.

Haggerty Girls, attached here to RTC 60 and with Grace D alongside, was likely the newest tugboat in the Reinauer fleet.  Note the bulbous domes of Ellis Island to the right.

The 2006 Manson dredge Glenn Edwards was in town.  Currently, it’s in Florida.

Wittich Marine’s 1977 Iron Mike ranged the boro now and again.  I’m not sure if this boat is still around.

Brendan would have about a decade of work ahead of it yet.

The 2012 Evening Star and B. No. 250 made their way east.  Star is now Rose, Jordan Rose.  In the distance, that’s a Genesis Marine unit.

Then, as is still the case, the 1951 Twin Tube was the boro’s premiere delivery service.

Meagan McAllister still had the red/white striped stacks.  Currently she’s Charles James.

And some waterways in the boro could be as congested as the roadways around the watery boro.  Note three tugboats with Cheyenne to the left, Kimberly Turecamo forward, and Gramma Lee T assisting in Four Sky.

Laura K heads out for the next assist while Robert E. works another vessel to its berth.  Mare Pacific and another tanker line up along the opposite shore.

I really enjoy putting together this monthly feature, opening the archives from a decade back to see what I did and saw.  I just happened to walk past South Street Seaport that morning and caught Lettie G. Howard returning from repairs in Maine.  See more from the set here.  She turned 130 in the Great Lakes this year.

The 1977 McAllister Sisters continues to carry that only name she’s ever had.  Two changes, though, are she’s lost the upper wheelhouse and she’s moved to Baltimore.

It’s the time of year for clamming in the sixth boro.  I’ve not seen Dutch Girl yet this year, although I believe I spotted Eastern Welder . . . the nearer boat.

The 1997 Ever Decent was scrapped in Alang in 2020;  the 2012 Evening Star has become Jordan Rose and continues to operate through the sixth boro.

This Mount Saline in Port Newark has been replenished several times, and its granules may have kept you safely on the road.

The 1963 Crow, high in the water here, would never again move on its own power and was scrapped in 2015.

These two Thornton boats–Gage Paul and Bros— are gone as well, one scrapped and one growing into undersea habitat deep in a Caribbean trench and will likely never be seen again.

The 1951 Twin Tube here squeezes in between the pier and Balder as Balder discharges more Chilean salt.  More on the surprising contents of Balder‘s belly here. She may now be laid up as Ventura in West Africa.  Check out the harbor supply boat on her mission that day here.   Twin Tube continues to operate in the boro.   

I don’t know what has become of the 1954 Ticonderoga;  she may still be behind Prall’s Island.

I don’t have any updates on this government boat, said to date from 1929.

The 1966 Patrick Sky has long left the boro.  Summit Europe is now Myra and is anchored near Istanbul.  Indeed, the sixth boro is connected to the rest of the watery parts of the planet.

Houma, Long Island Jakobson-built for Texaco, lasted from 1970 until 2017.  

This Frederick E. Bouchard (1975) is now Mary Emma, currently working in the Gulf of Mexico.

This Shannon McAllister, currently in Narragansett Bay, came off the ways in 1991 as Alice Winslow

James Turecamo was launched in the Hudson River in Cohoes in 1969,  not far from where she still works.  Stolt Aquamarine, launched 1986, was scrapped at Alang in 2016.

Escort came out of the Jakobson yard in 1983;  the past few years she’s been Northstar Innovator, which I’ve never seen. 

Hunt Girls is another 1983 model;  after a long time on the hard in Tottenville, she recently came out as Henry Girls, which I’ve yet to see as well. 

As a supporter of “long shot” cases, I long thought the 1887 NY Central #13 would make its way back into the water.  Unfortunately she was scrapped in 2017.

And finally, from a decade ago, the still Alice Oldendorff came into town laden with Nova Scotia rock, assisted by Robert E. McAllister, ex-YTB-803, as USCG 25659 cruises past. Alice is now Algoma Verity, a veritable hard-working aggregate hauler now sailing near the Bahamas.

A decade ago, the split-hulled trailing suction hopper dredger Atchafalaya was in the sixth boro.  These days in 2023 the 1980 vessel in the St. Johns River of the Alligator and Sunshine State.  I don’t believe it actually worked in the sixth boro.

The west side walkway made for a lot of photography on my part in spring 2013, like Asian King here making the turn at Bergen Point with assist from Gramma Lee T Moran. The 1998 RORO today goes by Liberty King and is located between Hokkaido and Honshu.  Gramma Lee is working in san Juan these days.

Evening Tide is currently in chrysalis state in Brooklyn. 

Pretty World had to be “dead-ship assisted” into port 10 years ago.  The assist tugs (l to r) are Margaret Moran (I think), Marion Moran, and Gramma Lee.  The 2007 tanker now goes by a much more prosaic Central and is in port off Ivory Coast. Marion Moran is now Dann Marine’s Topaz Coast

Maersk Ohio is currently in Norfolk. 

The US-flagged Maersk ship is assigned on the northern Europe run. 

Superior Service is now Genesis Vision, currently in Lake Charles LA.

The 1971 Fred Johannsen, usually mostly up the Hudson, came down in April 2013 to do-si-do back upriver with Taurus, now Hay’s Joker

Ellen McAllister is still Ellen McAllister.  But from this angle, a proto-drone view from the Bayonne Bridge, she appears more rotund than I usually imagine. 

Marion Moran focuses on giving the 1996 HanJin San Francisco an extra amount of shove to round Bergen Point. I believe 4024 teu container ship has been scrapped. 

And finally, North Sea is now Sause’s Kokua, now working around Maui.

He saw and took this photo of Osprey  in Vallejo CA in November 2022.

Osprey above is 125′ x 38′ and propulsion power of 6140 hp .  Sun Spirit below is 122′ x 37′ and the same hp as Osprey.  Ring any bells?

The first half of January 2013–a decade ago–was one long gallivant, taking in New Orleans to St Louis to Pittsburgh and then back home.  In the spirit of these retro posts, let me start here, shooting right off the Algiers ferry. Barbara E. Bouchard is now Dann M’s Turquoise Coast, which I’ve not seen.

No stroll in the night life of Nola is complete without a stop at Igor’s Checkpoint Charlie, combo bar, music venue, and laundromat!!

Following the river by car, we next stopped in Baton Rouge, and among the dozens of boats, enjoy this one–Ned Ferry–with a sixth boro connection:  It was built in 1959 Pittsburgh for Pennsylvania Railroad, which in 1968 merged with the New York Central to form Penn Central.  In 1974 it was sold to Crescent, which repowered and rebuilt it . . .  Find more in Paul Strubeck’s Diesel Railroad Tugs Vol 1.

The river is quite busy;  here Creole Sun works on a fleeting job.

Richard‘s pushing a set of tank barges. You might imagine I’m toying with a Mississippi River cruise this year.

American Pillar is a good example of a line haul boat:  195′ x 54′ and working with 10500 hp.

Fort Defiance Park in Cairo IL is a good place to see the Ohio and the Mississippi River refuse to mix for a while.  Note the difference in water color.

I never mentioned that my car was broken into in East St Louis in summer 2021;  Malcolm W Martin Park right across the way is the place.  I left a review on tripadvisor in September 2021 here if you scroll through.

Leaving St Louis in 2013 we made a stop in Kampville to catch the ferry across the Illinois River.

 

Then it was a lot of dry until we got to the Monongahela River at Belle Vernon PA, and the port of registry on these boats tell you where the nearest port (to the north) is.

This monthly practice of looking back a decade gives me an opportunity to dust off a specific part of the archive in tugster tower.  Besides sneezing sometimes because of the dust, I also feel amazed about the amount of change, small changes maybe but significant it seems. 

Evening Mist has become Everly Mist, and is in a new endeavor.  Palva is now Laurentia DesGagnes operating on and out of the Saint Lawrence River where I saw her a few years back.  Only Eastern Welder in the background remains.

I made a few trips out to Greenport a decade ago, and walking through a shipyard saw this vessel from Suffolk Count Department of Health and its unusual top deck exhaust.  Is that still around?  I’m guessing it might check water quality on shellfishing areas . . .

Bebedouro (1974) and Atlantic Conveyor (1985), now both dead and scrapped.  Brendan Turecamo still works here all day every day.

Rebel (138′ x 46′) is still on the NJ side of the sixth boro, waiting for an opportunity to get back to work.

Viking (132′ x 34′) has been cut up.

Annabelle Dorothy Moran was on her delivery run, making her way to the Chesapeake/Delaware Bay area, where she still works. Those range markers are no longer in place on the Brooklyn Heights bank of the sixth boro.

John B Caddell was nearing the end of this shore leave, heading for her final one.  Note Sarah Ann tending the crane barge and WTC in the distance not yet completed. 

Commander, a WW1 USN vet as SP-1247, was still showing its rotondity.

Joan Turecamo, a late Matton product, was still in the boro.  Now she winds her way around the curves of the Lower Mississippi. 

Sarah Ann and others of the Donjon fleet kept me up most of the night in December 2012, as she stood by a barge carrying WTC antenna sections that  were lifted onto Manhattan . . .

across a blocked west side highway . . . lowered onto a vehicle with dozens of axles . . .

and trucked inland

In other night photos, quite rare on this blog . . .  it’s Clearwater lifted onto Black Diamond barge with Cornell standing by.

I hope you enjoyed this backward glance as much as I have.  I might have to get out and do some documenting of nighttime events on the sixth boro this December.

I won’t tell you the name yet, but here are some hints:  she carried the same name for 40 years and it was changed only in this fall.

More clues:  106′ x 35′ and 5100 hp.

This is a deviation from her new livery, but if you’re not ready to paint, slapping on a sticker might be a quick solution.

Her previous name was used once before in 1952 by her previous company.  That 1952 boat was reefed off NJ in August 1996 after going through a half dozen names here.

And here you have it:  tugster readers, meet The Beatrice.

I can’t say if more than unusual number of changes are in fact happening these days, or if my radars are set to detect change.  In either case, I privilege novelty on this blog, so here we go, the first of the series.

April 2016 this was Ellen S. Bouchard alongside Bouchard Boys.

Also in 2016,  Ellen S. was in a crowded channel meeting another fleetmate, Evening Light.

From yesterday coming through Hell Gate I saw this. Name the tugboat pushing B. No. 282?

here slowed down because of the work over near Blount-built William Brewster and the Manhattan side 79th Street bridge.

She’ll round the bend at the Battery and head up to Albany.
