The Dark Sky – It’s Lights Out at Dark!
We practice a “Lights Out” philosophy here at West Bay Acadia to protect our critters and plants. Nature depends on the Earth’s daily cycles of light and dark to govern life sustaining behaviors. We are a Dark Sky Campground. Lights out is only for outdoor lights. Campfires and laughter are encouraged!
Try it while you are here.
- Grab your flashlight and take a walk around the roads of the campground. See if you can spot any night-time critters!
- Get comfortable and gaze up at the stars. Take a silent journey into wonder and awe
- Improve your night-time photography skills. Even an iPhone can take great pictures after dark.
Awaken Your Appreciation of the Night – Hear the quiet…
We saw the Northern Lights in late September! How exciting!!!

Sunrise on Cadillac Mountain | First Light
Each day before dawn, hundreds of pilgrims make their way to Acadia National Park’s highest point, eager to claim being the first to watch the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain.
From October to early March, the sun strikes Cadillac Mountain first; at other times Mars Hill in Aroostook County claims the first-light crown. Cadillac Mountain is one of more than 20 mountains on Mount Desert Island, and at 1,530 feet, it’s the highest point along the North Atlantic seacoast. It’s worth the trek to witness the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain.
