Did Dark Olive ever change?

My Dad's truck, which he had since 1970, had always been this color. Matched the interior too I believe, so not likely a repaint that early in its life.

It was always a bit unique though. It seemed to have a lot more blue in it than the Dark Olive trucks I always see.

Any ideas? Sorry, the photo is not the best. It's a 1968 GMC 910. Weird truck - 307 but every HD suspension option. Power steering but manual brakes. No radio, but it had a lighter.

Re: Did Dark Olive ever change?

From the picture and your description I'd say his truck was 505 Dark Green (non-metallic) and not the 70 up 506 Dark Olive poly (metallic). 505 was not a common retail color, but a lot of fleets used it forever.

Re: Did Dark Olive ever change?

Thanks Tim! Your photo looks precisely how I remember it, so I think you've answered it. Speaking of fleet trucks, every big block truck I ever saw in Canada (which would be about 3 of them) was purple, having originated with some fleet.

In my photo, I don't recall a lot of US trucks having just that lower beltline molding. Is that normal for a '68?

Also, is it odd for such a base model truck to have the stainless side molding?

Re: Did Dark Olive ever change?

Figured that was it! 505 is a nice color just not flashy. Hard to find a picture that "looks" true color.

The upper trim was not offered prior to the 69 MY, Thus lower bodyside molding (narrow) was all you could get.

A lot of base trucks have a little dressing. Its an easy up sell on a lot unit.

YES it is! To me its the perfect color for a K20/K2500. If we are wishing a 71 K20 stepside Cheyenne Super with parchment bucket trim.

Re: Did Dark Olive ever change?

It was also called Woodland Green over the years. this color is one that did not change in all the years and is still available (in fleet color selection). The truck in my avatar has it, i have had a '40, a '54, a '65, several 67-72s, a '79, and a '92 all in this color. It's the classic truck color. this is the green you will see on parks dept. trucks, Mayflower, and many other fleets. Omaha Orange is another fleet color that has been there throughout, sometimes in the regular selections

Here are a couple examples I have:

Re: Did Dark Olive ever change?

Tim, is that green the same as Brewster green from the old days? My 3100 was Brewster originally and it looked just like that last pic of the napco 57?

Re: Did Dark Olive ever change?

I'm not sure what they called it in different years. I see Dark Green used in 67-72, but brochures used more "colorful" names. there were two darker greens in '57, so not sure which was this one. I have seen a few newer trucks this color, very few. Most fleet vehicles are going white with a hit of company colors in the vinyl stickers. It's sad to see. I love the old fleet truck pride and brand recognition out on the road. Just another good thing gone

I would love to have a k20 with fresh 505 or 506, they would be hard to beat. I think forum member CG's truck is 505 i can post one of his pics later.

Forum member Erls truck was a green lwb stepside 4x4. I think it was 505.

Re: Did Dark Olive ever change?

My k/20 is the same 557 medium over dark as 70 cst's truck. The dark Olive Has become one of my favorite factory colors. Dark blue and hugger being a couple others I love.
