No Binding. Condition: VG. Sized about 1.5 x 3 inches, printed in black ink, minor foxing. Label was attached as a bookplate of sorts to a bound volume of The Atlantic Monthly magazine, 1859. Colonel Hugh Young, b. County Down, Killyleagh, Ireland, immigrated at age 18 to Potter County, Pennsylvania, and the home of his elder brother. Having an inborn desire to be self-supporting, Young, in 1852, got work as a clerk in a general store. He entered the law office of John S. Mann, as a student, and supported himself by doing occasional jobs as draftsman, surveyor, bookkeeper, and also writing for newspapers. Throughout his long life and career, he played successively the roles of student, teacher, bookkeeper, war correspondent, editor, soldier, legislator, and banker. He wrote much and contributed from time to time papers on economic and banking subjects. He was a member of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. In 1876 he accepted the nomination and was elected to the Pennsylvania legislature. The following year he was appointed National Bank Examiner and served as such until March 1888 when he retired and established the Wellsboro National Bank, of which he became President. In 1891, he was appointed National Bank Examiner for the City of Pittsburgh and served until December 1903, when he was elected president of the Federal Bank. Young was also president of the Tioga County Savings and Trust Company of Wellsboro. A few years later his inclination for journalism led him to correspond for the New York Tribune during the warfare between the border ruffians of Missouri and the Free State settlers in Kansas. His letters from the field attracted wide attention. As a result, when the Free Soil newspaper, known as the Herald of Freedom, which had been destroyed at Lawrence, Kansas, was reestablished, Young became an associate editor with founder George W. Brown. Young continued in Kansas until after the presidential election of 1856, when he returned to PA. He had been a delegate from Kansas to the first National Republican Convention, held in Philadelphia, and had belonged to the old Whig party. When the Civil War broke out, Young took an active part in raising troops in response to the call of President Lincoln, and himself enlisted in Company F, 35th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. On September 22, 1859, Young married Lois Ann Butterworth, daughter of Appleton and Mary (Wilmot) Butterworth. Young was editor of the Tioga Agitator at the time. A twin brother, Thomas L. Young, was a former Governor of Ohio. Young was President of the Federal National Bank and despite his age at the time of his death was still chairman of the Board of Directors. He was also a director in the American Waterway and Guarantee Company of Pittsburgh. Colonel Young died on October 20, 1912, at his home town, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, in his 80th year, leaving behind his wife and three sons, Robert, Thomas, and Carl, all of Wellsboro.

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. EDMUND GOSSE A Literary landscape 1849-1928 Ann Thwaite. Secker & Warburg, London 568pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in very good condition. There is a small neat signature to the front paste down which is hidden by the dustwrapper front flap. The unclipped dustwrapper is also in very good condition and has now been covered with removable, clear protective film. Sir Edmund William Gosse CB (21 September 1849 ? 16 May 1928) was an English poet, author and critic; the son of Philip Henry Gosse and Emily Bowes. Gosse started his career as assistant librarian at the British Museum from 1867 alongside the songwriter Theo Marzials, a post which Charles Kingsley helped his father obtain for him. An early book of poetry published with a friend John Arthur Blaikie gave him an introduction to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Trips to Denmark and Norway in 1872?74, where he visited Hans Christian Andersen and Frederik Paludan-Müller, led to publishing success with reviews of Ibsen and Bjørnson in the Cornhill Magazine. He was soon reviewing Scandinavian literature in a variety of publications. He became acquainted with Alfred, Lord Tennyson and friends with Robert Browning, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Thomas Hardy and Henry James. In the meantime, he published his first solo volume of poetry, On Viol and Flute (1873) and a work of criticism, Studies in the Literature of Northern Europe (1879). Gosse and Robert Louis Stevenson first met while teenagers, and after 1879, when Stevenson came to London on occasion, he would stay with Gosse and his family. In 1875 Gosse became a translator at the Board of Trade, a post which he held until 1904 and gave him time for his writing and enabled him to marry and start a family. From 1884 to 1890, Gosse lectured in English literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, despite his own lack of academic qualifications. Cambridge University gave him an honorary MA in 1886, and Trinity College formally admitted him as a member, 'by order of the Council', in 1889. He made a successful American lecture tour in 1884 and was in much demand as a speaker and on committees as well as publishing a string of critical works as well as poetry and histories. He became, in the 1880s, one of the most important art critics dealing with sculpture (writing mainly for the Saturday Review) with an interest spurred on by his intimate friendship with the sculptor Hamo Thornycroft. Gosse would eventually write the first history of the renaissance of late-Victorian sculpture in 1894 in a four-part series for the Art Journal, dubbing the movement the New Sculpture. In 1904, he became the librarian of the House of Lords Library, where he exercised considerable influence till he retired in 1914. He wrote for the Sunday Times, and was an expert on Thomas Gray, William Congreve, John Donne, Jeremy Taylor, and Coventry Patmore. He can also take credit for introducing Ibsen's work to the British public. Gosse and William Archer collaborated in translating Hedda Gabler and The Master Builder; those two translations were performed throughout the 20th century. Gosse and Archer, along with Shaw, were perhaps the literary critics most responsible for popularising Ibsen's plays among English-speaking audiences. His most famous book is the autobiographical Father and Son, about his troubled relationship with his Plymouth Brethren father, Philip, which was dramatised for television by Dennis Potter. Published anonymously in 1907, this followed a biography he had written of his father as naturalist, when he was urged by George Moore among others to write more about his own part. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. Neborsky, Joanna (illustrator). 1st Edition. First Edition, 1st printing. 448pp. w/a great Index. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in AS NEW condition. "At once a love letter to literature and a charming guide to the books most worth reading, A READER'S BOOK OF DAYS features bite-size accounts of events in the lives of great authors for every day of the year. Here is Marcel Proust starting In Search of Lost Time and Virginia Woolf scribbling in the margin of her own writing, 'Is it nonsense, or is it brilliance?' Fictional events that take place within beloved books are also included: the birth of Harry Potter's enemy Draco Malfoy, the blood-soaked prom in Stephen King's Carrie. [] A READER'S BOOK OF DAYS is filled with memorable and surprising tales from the lives and works of Martin Amis, Jane Austen, James Baldwin, Roberto Bolano, the Brontë sisters, Junot Díaz, Philip K. Dick, Charles Dickens, Joan Didion, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Keats, Hilary Mantel, Haruki Murakami, Flannery O'Connor, Orhan Pamuk, George Plimpton, Marilynne Robinson, W. G. Sebald, Dr. Seuss, Zadie Smith, Susan Sontag, Hunter S. Thompson, Leo Tolstoy, David Foster Wallace, and many more. The book also notes the days on which famous authors were born and died; it includes lists of recommended reading for every month of the year as well as snippets from book reviews as they appeared across literary history; and throughout there are wry illustrations by acclaimed artist Joanna Neborsky. [] Brimming with nearly 2,000 stories, A READER'S BOOK OF DAYS will have readers of every stripe reaching for their favorite books and discovering new ones." [jacket copy] "Finally, a book to live by. Every day will remind me of the few things I've read and all the endless treasures I have to look forward to. How lucky for readers that Tom Nissley has turned his formidable intelligence to the history of literature."--Ann Patchett. "Brilliant, fascinating, and fun!"--Ken Jennings. "Those who know Tom Nissley simply as a Jeopardy! stud, prepare to be amazed. He's more than just a gutsy wonk with a photographic memory; as A READER'S BOOK OF DAYS establishes for all time, he's witty, erudite, and sweet-natured, and he has a gorgeous prose style to boot. Beware: read one of these pages and you're hooked."--Blake Bailey. Pristine hardcover w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding, wrapped in a bright & intact jacket. Quite presentable.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the early 1920s, when T.W. House Jr., A.C. Guthrie, and Thomas Ball came to the conclusion that Houston needed a new country club, complete with an 18-hole golf course, they formed Country Club Estates. They chose to build on land called the House tract just west of downtown. Very quickly, 300 memberships were sold, with each including one share of stock in the company. Within a year, Will and Mike Hogg, along with Hugh Potter, recognized this as a perfect idea for the bustling city of Houston. They purchased 1,100 acres, eventually creating the River Oaks Corporation. Images of America: Houston's River Oaks takes the reader from 1923 to 1970 and tells the story of one of the most carefully planned subdivisions in America. Today, River Oaks is known as an enviable place to call home. The careful planning undertaken by these Houstonians 90 years ago produced results of unmatched beauty and a quality of life still enjoyed today.
