I didn't have any great expectations when buying this touch up paint... My car is still relatively new and it had about ten little pock marks, little spots where paint had chipped off from flying rocks or whatever; so my goal was mainly to stop the spots from turning into spreading, unsightly rust. I got this quicker than expected which was great... it comes with towelettes to remove wax, which was good... no problems there, worked fine... 4 stars. The primer pen was easy to use, went on very well... 5 stars. The paint wasn't an exact match, but close enough, and it went on relatively easy and about as smooth as could be expected, considering that it's coming from a pen... I'll give it 4 stars.
So why an overall 2 stars? The clear coat. Everything went quite well, and up to the point where I was getting ready to put on the clear coat, I was really quite satisfied with how everything was looking... I was pleasantly surprised, really. But then, the clear coat. Dear god, the clear coat. It had the consistency of super glue... the first few dabs and strokes were okay, but then it literally just started acting like super glue, becoming thick to the point where it was tacky and actually would start to "thread"... strands would literally form as I pulled the pen tip away from the car surface and then blow in the wind like a spiders silk... it was impossible to put the stuff on in a smooth manner... I tried shaking the pen again, thinking maybe it wasn't mixed well... nope. I tried to prime the pen tip more, pushing it in and out... nope. The clear coat got harder and harder as I tried to use it... again, it was as if they put super glue into the clear coat side of the pen. The otherwise totally acceptable spot paint job went from a 4 star look to a 2 star look... blotchy. My only hope is that after the 5 day curing period that I can wax the blotchiness out of the spots.
So, do I think that I solved the problem of stopping the paint chips from rusting out and becoming bigger problems? I hope so? Yeah, clear coat is used to make the car look shiny and more attractive, but it more importantly protects the underlying paint from the outside world... I'm sure that this stuff has certainly delayed any rust from forming, but I can't be sure of anything beyond that.
