2006 Dodge Dakota is a GREAT Mid-sized Truck

This bodystyle was 2004 through 2011; it's very roomy, especially the full-sized back seat in the quadcab. We put two carseats in it for our young grandchildren, added nerfbars so they can climb in easily, and walla! They loved it! The backseat had ample room for an adult as well.

The front seats are also comfortable even for a large buttocks. It's a comfortable ride especially with new tires & struts. We had an automatic transmission, and low mileage (below 100,000). I only had two complaints: (1) poor gas mileage at 17-22mpg (V-8 magnum engine), and (2) the shifter on the column.

I refer to it in the past tense because an inattentive driver, crossed the median and totaled the truck. We had it less than 3 months. Now we're looking for a 2011 model. We're absolutely sold on these Dakotas.

I started out really liking this truck because it was a large midsize truck, it had pretty good towing capacity, and it was roomy. I have the crew cab 4x4. After owning it for 8 years I'm sick of it. The truck gets horrible mileage for its size. I have multiple friends who have full size and I have owned previous full size and they all got the same or better mileage. I have taken very good care of it, kept it clean, and always had it serviced, but it started rusting from the inside of the wheel wells and outside the fenders on the bed when it was only 4 years old and had 44,000 miles. I looked online and it is a common problem with this truck due to manufacturer design. The only thing I can stay I still like is that the inside is roomy enough for two kids in car seats, a golden retriever inbetween them, and me and my wife to all fit in. I still like that it has good towing capacity to pull a 24 foot pontoon or a 20 foot trailer loaded down with mulch. So for a work truck it would be a good one, but with the v6 its far under powered engine leaves to poor mileage (make sure to get the biggest engine in it) and the body defects should never have happened. Overall the truck has never had any major mechanical problems other than going through suspension quickly due to them being undersized.

Outdated, But Useful

I purchased this vehicle as the third owner and have driven it infrequently and only locally due to issues with the 2 piece driveshaft. I find the truck to be somewhat of a retro design even in 2006. It is generally well built and easy to drive and serves well to haul moderate loads. It could use some tiedowns in the bed to secure loads and do without the vision blocking head restraints in the club cab rear seat.
The Dodge Dakota has not been available since 2011, but it makes a good used truck for those needing a medium size pickup truck.

2006 Dakota- ok- not great. I think they tried to save $$ by using parts from the 1500 trucks. The suspension is stiff and jarring. The front end parts were worn out at 25000 miles. The engine and transmission were good- although the mileage was the same as a large pickup. The transmission has a flare on the 3-4 shift -- the underdrive clutch releases and the overdrive clutch engages- (you cant have both --on-- at the same time)- but you dont want it to hit neutral either. It is boyant on the expressway- kind of floats- so you have to correct the steering all the time. It drives better with a heavy load. Not for leisure driving.

Gutless V6 but dependable over 271k miles.

I'm the original owner with over 271,000 miles so far.I have the quad with a V6 engine. Plain Jane no bells and whistles. It's very dependable have never had any problems with it. I change oil every 4,500 mikes like clock work and has had regular recommended maintenance. Replaced water pump only, new lifetime shocks and hubs, many break jobs and spark plugs every 60K. No major problems is gutless but still running strong and handles nice. It gets 21 miles per gallon on highway but only 16 miles around town. just found out dealers don't take trade ins over 200k miles. So, will probably keep it till it stops. I will consider another one but a 4x4 next time as I've gotten stuck a few times.

Runs great right now. Body rusts to easy, especially the bed and doors. Have had some electrical issues. Have continuously had issues with power steering from about 100k miles and on, no matter what I replaced it still leaked.
