Hardwick!

My Aunt had a Hardwick in the 70's that was 30 inches coppertone with window and light in oven no other frills broiler on bottom. I liked the stove and enjoyed perking a pot of coffee in her corningware pot.

Great Scans Peter!

We had that same Hardwick range in a home that I grew up in for about 4 years as a kid.
My mom always talks about how she loved that range.
Love the electric scans also!
Thanks

My Mom's friend Margaret had the 40" Frigidaire, the same or nearly so as the one shown - her's also in Charcoal Gray.

Hans, were the GE's in white, or another color(s)? Guess they must have come out of an apartment complex to have that many at a time.

I notice the 24" Frigidaire is an Australian model. Does anyone know if these were sold in N.A.?

Notice that the kitchen cabinets in the GE and Frigidaire ads look the same. GE sold them under their name; did Frigidaire also have a line of cabinets? Or are they the Republic Steel brand, which I think made them for GE?

what a timely thread

Just Monday I drove to KY and picked up a GE Spacemaker from Tim. It's a beauty in the rough; but a perfect range for my farmhouse kitchen. Grabbed a set of GE cabinets at an estate sale; I'm on a roll...I sense a theme here. Westinghouse in th city, GE in the country!

24"

I had an apartment in college with a 24" Caloric gas, and it was really good. Could put out some serious heat.

A friend remodeled his condo and got a black 24" gas Premier range. Anybody know anything about them? Except for very cheap plain models, 24" ranges are hard to find it seems.

I was in Habitat Re-Store last week and they had a 36" Premier stainless "Pro Series" gas 6-burner for sale.

I would say that ad for the hardwick gas range was about 1962 or 63. The womans clothes look like the Jackie-O style of the time.

That 59 Frigidaire stove is just a work of art! I love the way the individual burners indicate what they are set to.

OMG gansky1

I had a stove like this at my last condo. It was a Magic Chef. I hated that damn stove. You could never use a large stock pot and it was always blowing circuits. By the way, I wonder how many curlers it took Margo to get her hair like that. Oh, those 70s with all its Harvest Gold, Copper Tone, Avocado Green :)

Throw in a rat-tail comb and a can "self-styling" Adorn, or V05 hairspray and that should get you where you needed to be! *LOL*

Still love the hair, dress, shoes, decor, and those fablous ranges. Not fond of those loafers, socks and cuffed blue jeans.

That Frigidaire range is to die for! How did those "heat minder" controls work? Were they reliable?

Greg great ad for the Hardwick, but when you consider how much hair spray she has in her hair she shouldn't go anywhere near a gas range. That could all be gone faster than the Hindenburg.

Premier Stove Co.

Premier Stoves is an American company based in Illinois that still produces ranges domestically. From our limited research, they make high quality, but simple ranges. I picked up an 80s Premier for $20 for my 3rd floor apartment, and the girls that live there quite liked it. It's a 30" range with either 5 burners, or you can convert the center burner to a griddle, or just put a cover on and have a traditional 4 burner model. All premiers that I've seen, even the new ones have pull out broilers at the bottom, rather than a storage drawer. Menard's carried a lot of Premier ranges, at least the one I've been to in Decatur, IL.

Gansky, we have the same Frigidaire range! I've always loved that range, and while it's in the basement area now still use it from time to time.

Mine is lacking the heat minder, but I might scavenge one from a '65 cooktop I have, if it's compatible. Unfortunately my glass panel is cracked, Way back when in '59 when my mom got it we had a glass block window right above the stove. The cold transferred from the blocks caused the glass to break on more than one occasion. After the last time my mom just lived with it. It really only has 6 years of everyday use, in '65 we moved to a new home and it had a crappy 30" Hotpoint drop in range. At that point the monster was moved to the basement and hooked up a few years later. If I recall my folks paid about $600 of it in '59, think of that in 2010 $$$!

Modern kitchens are just not designed for 40" ranges, too bad.

This turquoise color Brown is a 27" model, I think it started life in a trailer, or a manufactured home. Supposed to work, I haven't checked it.
Also, if anyone feels the need, I have the matching Admiral single door refrigerator. It works fine.

That Brown in turquoise :-) is very cool. We had friends years ago that were living in a trailer while building their own log cabin home in the hills along the Missouri river in Iowa. They had this range and a matching refrigerator (can't recall the brand now) but theirs were yellow. They had a nice fan above the range - you could see the ground outside the spinning (knives) blades! (sorry, Peter, it is a range thread after all ;-)

This Frigidaire is a gorgeous range, just spectacular - like all turquoise usually is. I had this in the kitchen until a couple of weeks ago when I switched it out with the 57 pink GE. Change them like handbags for the season? Perhaps, but they are both too pretty to choose between them...

I do have manuals for my 59 Frigidaire - thank you though!

The Wards "flameless" ranges were made by Tappan. I always thought that was one of the most stylish 30" ranges of the time. One of my grandmother's neighbors had one the just lod Interesting that the self-clean model didn't, or couldn't have a window.

Found this Maytag shot. Looks like a barkcloth pattern, doesn't it?

My Aunt Eloise had the Kenmore electric model, but in Avocado. They got it when they built the new house in '71, which replaced the one lost to Huricane Camille. Always thought it was made by Roper, but maybe it was a Whirlpool.

That's the first time I've ever seen an ad for Imperial. I have a gas countertop range and wall oven of that make from the early 1960s in my apartment. Stainless! The landlord wanted to upgrade with new appliances, I told him N-O. My stuff works just fine.

BTW, the model is wearing a classic "12-roller set" from the 60s. We hairdressers used to love 'em - in and out in 45 min.

Those SHOES!

My grandmother had a conventional Hotpoint range from about 1966 with the Teflon panels...it was a very noisy range (when walking by)...it had wire racks (duh) which fitted into wire side shelves (instead of formed porcelain-coated-steel), with the teflon panels behind. It rattled as you walked by or opened the door, but was easier to clean. Had the oven element burn out in 1993 when I was living with her--it pitted the teflon on the bottom liner. (I replaced the element). Only other weirdness...it had 5 heat burners with knobs (click-click-click) but no pilot light for the rangetop.

Isn't that the same range - Tappan (or Wards?) convection that John has on his back porch? We turned it on a year ago, that thing can really put out some heat.

Gasp

In 1976 I bought the Frigidaire Touch-N-Cook range in Avocado green. It was a dream to own and cook. With no dials or knobs the backsplash was a breeze to clean. The oven was like all Frigidaire ranges, absolute perfection. I liked the cooktop. It was easy to clean because it never got dirty. I learned you have to dry it after every wipe because brown streaks would appear from the dishcloth swipes. I had Farberware and the aluminum bottoms made gray marks on the cooktop. Corningware introduced a line of cookware that was Pyroceram with metal plates attached to the bottom. Thery worked very well but it was hard to stir puddings and sauces in a square pan. Once you got the rythm going the mass would shoot out of the corner. When I moved back to the midwest I traded the Frigidaire appliances for a Pontiac Bonneville.

The Corning was a Frigidaire product - probably a trade-off program. Ranges for Ceran tops and vise-versa. I always thought the Corian ranges were so pretty. An aunt of mine in Minnesota (not Don ;-) had one many years ago in their new house and she hated it with a passion!

Another aunt of mine bought the Hotpoint version of the GE micro-range combo in about 78-79 when she and my uncle retired from farming and built a new house in town. She was the first in the family to get a self-cleaning oven so they intentionally let a cherry pie bubble over into the oven so they could run the cleaning cycle. After about 1/2 hour, all those women decided it was time to do their needlepoint & knitting on the deck to escape the smoke in the house!

The range worked beautifully but the height of the cooktop was limited, as was the complaint with most of these. My sister had a GE double oven (no micro) and loved the range overall but didn't like the height restrictions and access to the back burners was limited even from sides a somewhat as well.

GE 1978

That same range, in white, with microwave was out in a neighbor's driveway a few days ago. The houses in this development, including the one where I live, were built in 1978. Those ranges must have been standard equipment for these houses. I've seen a couple kicked to the curb over the last few years. This place was remodeled and has a 1994 GE glass top electric.

Have had to replace the former vent/microwave above the stove and it was hard to find one small enough to fit. Most of the over the stove ones now are wider.

My Uncle still owns and uses the 2nd version of that Corning Stove, introduced for people who didn't want to have to use Corningware pots and pans, but were willing to use PERFECTLY flat ones. It is indeed a combination of a Frigidaire GM self-cleaning oven with a Corning flat top and remarkably generic controls on a very nicely styled backsplash. My Uncle and his partner were prolific cooks so I can tell you that this stove saw mucho use.

You wanna talk high quality ranges? For me, they didn't get much better than these:

If my time machine were working, I'd go back and buy that light blue 40" baby and that gorgeous 24" stove and put them together. Actually, I prefer the later lines, the Ultramatics and their ultra-retro snazzola styling, but I can't complain about any of the porcelain colors in this brochure.

I too am curious of the Monarch range. My grandparents had one when I was growing up, it had the knobs on the backsplash with an overhang if I remember correctly? It was replaced after they gave it to my parents and my dad lit it on fire. I think it was replaced by a later GE push-button model.

Cleaned up well, but the oven has some rust issues, like every other norge ive ever seen!!,I think thats why you see so few of them, but they really do bake well.

broil element

Here is why they bake so evenly, the outer coil heats with the bake element providing balanced heat, unlike most ovens where the broil element heats at half voltage, this outer coil gets red hot, result, your biscuits are exactly the same on the top or bottom,Westinghouse had the same setup in the 50s.

Norgeway:

My parents had the larger version of your range, and I want to say that it was purchased in either 1959 or early 1960. I say that for even though I was four years old in 1960, I remember moving to the new house that year, and the Norge went with us. Our Norge shared the same knobs, clock, and design as yours, though it had a fluorescent light across the top that we used to leave on when we would be away from home in the evening.

I agree about baking, as I learned how to bake with that range, and haven't had the same results since moving out on my own and owning a series of ranges. I sold my parents' house two years ago, and that range is still in use by the new owners. I would have kept it, but with five doors in my kitchen, and counter configurations, I have to have a 30" range (that, plus the fact that I have my own gas from wells on the property, causing me to cook with gas).

Seeing the photos that you posted brought back many a memory. I wonder if Norge offered youur range in gas and 30"?

Joe

'67 Hotpoint

My friend Jay has a range that looks alot like the one priced at $199 in his condo, also in Avocado. I think his lacks a clock, though. It's in excellent condition, as he hardly ever uses it. His building was constructed in the late 60's-early 70's as an apartment complex, so everything was builder grade.

That 67 Hotpoint was one of my least favorite panel styles, it just looks "builder" and I saw far too many of them in apartments and new homes of the time - mostly in avocado and harvest gold. Blech! Perhaps in white and TOL with lights would make a huge difference in its appeal.

Not sure of the year on this baby but it was on CL a while back so I went to have a look. It had been in an apartment so the picture posted in the ad turned out to be much more flattering that real-life. It's a very attractive design though, that stainless top really sets it off.

GE/Hotpoint question...

Am I correct in remembering Hotpoint as the low end product line of GE? Didn't GE buy Hotpoint in the mid 60's? If not when?

Not too clear on the lineage.

GE-Hotpoint

Hotpoint has been associated with General Electric since 1918. I don't believe it started to become considered as their "low-end" line until the late 60's. In the 50's their products seem to have been equal to or above those of GE's own line.

GE vs HOTPOINT

It seems to me that Hotpoint was a lot like Olsamobile, just as GM tried out new ideas on the Olds before Cadillac or Buick,So was Hotpoint to GE,I always thoucht Hotpoint was more Deluxe,They invented the Calrod unit, had lighted pushbuttons before GE did, rotisseries etc.

GE/Hotpoint....

Interesting. For some reason I thought they were a separate brand for some time. I saw the similarity in later models, Hotpoint in the 60's and forward always seemed like a knock off brand. I recall the Hotpoint dishwasher ads from the 50's and thought of it then as a more upscale brand.

Thanks for clarifying...

Western-Holly

Greg, is that range electric or gas? The pic isn't clear enough for me to tell. If electric, I didn't know they ever made any. It looks a great deal like the electric range we used for a short time after moving into the house I now own. It belonged to the people who moved into our old house, which only had space for a 30". My Mom and Gale traded until the cabinets and countertop were modified to accept their wider model. I always remember it having a round oven window, and wondered what kind it was. We only had it for a couple months before getting our Westinghouse back.

CROWN STOVE

paulg's profile picture
I might have part of the story on the transition of Crown Stove.
My Grandmother's 1954 Crown stove is still in the family and I was curious as to what happened to the company.
I don't guarantee that this info is absolutely accurate because data on that company is so hard to come by.
However it appears that during their heyday they were based in Cicero,Illinois. They made ranges for many years until sometime in the 1970s (?) the roof collapsed on the factory. They didn't have the ability to recover. I heard that some company bought the machining but who that was I do not know. Oh well, that's all I've got. Crown stoves are still in a lot of homes in Chicagoland attesting to their good quality it seems.

Hotpoint slide-out Teflon panels

paulg's profile picture
Silly Hotpoint slide-out panel story.
As everyone knows, my Dad was an engineer for Hotpoint. He was with Home Laundry but Range was nearby.
At any rate, when the Hotpoint slide-out Teflon panels came out the employees ended up with samples. They make great cookie-sheets as they are "L" shaped and flat.
Also for Thanksgiving we made coffee for years on a huge Hotpoint drop-in drip coffeemaker. It's the one that you would drop in the Hotpoint well-cooker. We sat it on top of our Grandmother's Crown range (now in the basement after 1963) and made gobs of coffee. (Our main stove was a Universal Cribben/Sexton gas as our 1920's house had very poor electric feed.)
The coffee didn't come out in gobs but rather it made copious amounts of coffee.
And of course we ended up with lots and lots of rejected trim pieces. I am not joking when I tell you that we made grade-school election campaign buttons out of Silhouette washer and dryer knob trim centers. LOL!

Custom-trend... more

paulg's profile picture
The story on the Custom-Trend was this..
Apparently the lady who owned the house received the Custom-Trend range from the builder in 1961. The builder built the house sometime earlier and outfitted the kitchen a trendy manner including this range in 1961. Indeed when I visited the house, the kitchen was very 1960's chic.
The range was in use from at least 1961 until about a year ago.
General Electric Service fixed it once along the way, about 10 years ago. I have that receipt. Tech installed four new Calrod burners.
Limited Edition range or experiment? Who knows? The truth may be lost to history. It's interesting that the unit worked sooo long. It is clearly built to last...

I have over 100 pages of Frigidaire, Caloric and other salesman's pages. I don't want this thread to end! I'm going to start scanning and like Gansky, post a few at a time. And then of course, there are all the vacuum pages...! Greg

Woohoo! More scans - yay! I've only scratched the surface of my "library" as well, time is fleeting and it seems there is never enough to scan everything I want to share. I'm working on some stuff for Labor Day weekend now, but I should pull out some of the range stuff too. I wonder if we should start another thread now and then (part 2, 3, etc.) as this one might be getting a bit long in the download time for some.

What do you range-admirers think?

Americana

Greg, I knew a family in Lenoir who owned Home Electric Co.,which was an Electrical cotractor as well as a GE appliance dealer, their house had every thing original still in it in the 90s, I dont know if the current owners left anything original, but they had Woodtone brown GE appliances, and the range was the first generation Americana, with a narrow glass at the front that you looked into to look in the oven, they had the roll out DW,a bottom freezer fridge, and every NuTONE built in ever thought of, I was last in that house at their estate sale,so I dont know how it looks now,but always liked that model range.

Stratolounger

You can cook and nap at the same time! These are among the best ever made. The fridge will have the cool turn table shelves and there should be some metal detailing on the freezer door. Amazing! Do you plan to put them into service in your present kitchen?

Oh yeah!!

I have a good running fridge, but it looks terrible, a 63 Hotpoint,so the GE set is going in the kitchen,im using a Norge 30 range now,but it ,like all the other Norges ive had has oven rust issues,so im going to put in the yellow set, and probably paint the kitchen a contrasting color, maybe pink or turquoise! The GE fridge does have the rotating anodized shelves, and says Combination on the door, the whole kickplate is a chrome step pedal that opens the door. I also have a nice vintage NUTONE hood to install,it also has pushbuttons!

Hans - did the family in Lenoir have a GE Americana that looked like this?

A 1963 model; she came from somewhere in the Twin Cities, and had very little use. I've rarely used it - in fact, when Don came to visit, he used it more that weekend than I have have still to this day!

They are quite the beauties. Nothing beats a GE Calrod!

That Murray range was made by the same Murray Corp that owned Easy.

RV70 frigidaire range re:reply 134

I grew up with that range.

The deep well
The fryer pan
The double oven.

I have the manual still.

YES YES YES!

Thats it,and now as I think of it, it was coppertone and not Woodtone brown.

That house!!

Was built in 63, they had a Nutone built in STEREO , the turntable folded out of the wall!!!They also had a Filtex built in vacuum,Nutone kitchen center and a fallout shelter!!! I often wonder what happened to that stuff, There estate sale was about 10 years ago, and the appliances were not for sale, but even the dishwasher looked new.
