Overview

The Hyundai brand has long represented bang for your buck, and that’s certainly the case with the popular Palisade. This full-sized SUV supplies three rows of well-appointed seating, with all of the latest features and technologies that drivers want in a vehicle. While some things are already great (the industry’s best warranty coverage and 3 years/36,000 miles of complimentary oil/filter changes and tire rotations), other things have been improved in the 2022 version of the Palisade: all trims now get integrated turn-signal indicators for the exterior mirrors, along with additional safety technologies (blind-spot collision avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, and safe exit assist).

Trims, Powertrain, and Fuel Economy

The four ’22 Palisade trims – SE, SEL, Limited, and Calligraphy – are propelled by a powertrain consisting of a 3.8-liter V6 (output: 291 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque) and an eight-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC. On all trims, all-wheel drive is available over the standard front-wheel drive. This full-sized SUV can tow up to 5,000 pounds when it’s set up with trailer brakes (otherwise, towing capacity maxes out at 1,650 lb.). Fuel economy as estimated by the EPA is 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway for FWD versions and 19 city/24 highway for AWD versions.

Features by Trim Level

The base SE gets the standard second-row bench seat (60/40-split with one-touch slide function), allowing it to seat eight; the third-row is equipped with quiet mode to allow those seated there to snooze. It also has heated exterior mirrors with turn-signal indicators, LED headlights with auto on/off, five USB ports, trailer pre-wiring, and a 12-volt power outlet. The SEL adds heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, a moonroof, rooftop rails, door-handle puddle lamps, proximity key, push-button start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and LED interior lighting. Captain’s chairs replace the second-row bench to drop passenger capacity to seven, although those who need the eighth seat can opt to return the bench.

Things start to get really posh in the higher Palisade trims, with the Limited getting Nappa leather seating (heated and ventilated in the first and second rows); the deluxe driver’s seat has a full array of power lumbar adjustments, position memory, and a leg cushion extender for added thigh support to relieve fatigue on long drives. Two USB charge ports are added to the third row, which is upgraded with power adjustment. The Limited also receives a heated steering wheel, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a head-up display, a wireless smartphone charger, a dual-panel sunroof, position memory for the outside mirrors, a hands-free liftgate, the Driver Talk in-car PA system, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 115-volt power outlets, and ambient interior lighting. The Calligraphy ramps up its exterior with trim-specific accents, side-mirror puddle lamps, front and rear skid plates, perforated leather wrapping for the steering wheel, and a stylish cargo-area sill plate. Most of these amenities are optional for the SEL through the available Convenience Package and Premium Package.

Advanced Safety Technologies

Given that the dictionary definition of palisade is a protective structure, it’s fitting that all Hyundai Palisade trims are equipped with the SmartSense package of driver-assist technologies to surround occupants with state-of-the-art protection. The base version of SmartSense found on the SE and SEL consists of forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, rear parking sensors, rear occupant alert, lane following assist, lane keeping assist, driver attention warning, and safe exit assist. More technologies are added to the higher-end Limited and Calligraphy: front parking sensors, highway driving assist, a surround-view monitor, and advanced rear occupant alert (these are optional on the SEL).

Infotainment and Connectivity

The SE and SEL get the base infotainment version with an 8-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), and Bluetooth for hands-free phone and audio streaming. The SEL is eligible for an upgrade package containing a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and dual smartphone connection, all of which are included on the higher-grade Limited and Calligraphy.
