Bayern Munich could not make a comeback happen.

Initial reactions and observations

  • Amazing performance from Lucas Hernandez. The Frenchman proved that Bayern can count on him next season when David Alaba leaves the club.
  • Manuel Neuer! What a legend! Fantastic match from Bayern’s captain.
  • Bayern’s defense was lucky tonight, but also Bayern managed to have a clean sheet against one of the best attackers of today’s football.
  • Lewandowski’s absence proved to be the missing link for Bayern’s attack. Although Choupo Moting played well, we can only imagine the scoreline with Lewandowski upfront.
  • The lack of good substitutions is troubling. Maybe with some better options from the bench, Bayern could have turned things around.

Full time: Bayern Munich 1 — 0 PSG

90’ — Four minutes of added time.

84’ — Javi Martinez comes in for Choupo-Moting

83’ — Very good chance for Sane, but the shot wasn’t on target.

78’ — PSG scores but apparently from offside

75’ — The ref is making some very dubious decision today...

71’ — Jamal Musiala comes in for Alphonso Davies

68’ — Thomas Muller gets a questionable yellow

61’ — Good chance for Muller and an even better pass from Sane, but Muller was in a difficult spot and the shot went wide.

54’ — Neymar missed empty goal from just couple of meters away from the goal line.

53’ — Yellow card for David Alaba. In the meantime Bayern had a few good chances

45’ — The second half is underway.

Halftime observations and analysis

  • PSG was the better team in the first half. Neymar hit the post two times and Neuer made three saves. Luckily for Bayern, PSG was wasteful in the first half.
  • The ref is officiating horribly. I have a feeling that Orsato is very quick to whistle a foul for PSG than for Bayern. He also had some bad decisions regarding advantages.
  • Bayern also had their chances, especially after they’ve scored the goal, but Bayern looked more dangerous in the previous match. But Bayern is also more cautious this time. The team isn’t rushing going forward at any cost.

Halftime!

41’ — GOAL! Choupo Moting scores and Bayern take the lead!

39’ — Neymar hits the post, again...

37’ — Neymar hits the woodwork!

33’ — Good shot from Neymar, but Neuer saved it again!

28’ — Neuer with a fantastic 1v1 save!

26’ — Bayern had two good chances in the last couple of minutes. Sane tried first and Kimmich next, but both shots went wide

10’ — First chance for PSG. Neymar shot from close range, but Manuel Neuer saved it.

Kickoff! We’re underway

One hour until kickoff: We have lineups!

Bayern Munich want another Champions League title, but they will need to fight for it. After a calamitous first leg against PSG, the Bavarians face an uphill task trying to overturn a one-goal deficit without Robert Lewandowski.

Scoring goals isn’t necessarily a problem (though Bayern could definitely stand to do better) but the defense has simply been abhorrent this season. After Neymar and Mbappe ripped the backline apart in Munich, Flick has no choice but to go for a kamikaze strategy and hope the team can get the two unanswered goals needed to go through.

Unfortunately, the return of key players like Verratti, Paredes, and Florenzi will make life difficult for Bayern, especially with all the additional injuries the team has suffered in the past week. However, with players like Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich in the XI, this team will not give up until the final whistle is blown.

It’s Bayern time.
