What's New for the 2019 BMW 8 Series?

Once produced throughout the 1990s, the 8 Series—a sleek, sporty grand tourer with the body style of a two-door coupe—is making a comeback during the 2019 model year. Officially named “M850i,” the 8 Series Coupe gets a radically revised version of the award-winning 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, which outputs 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The V8, which comes with auto stop-start technology to prevent it from idling, is pinned to an 8-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for the choice of greater driver control over gear shifting. BMW’s all-wheel-drive system (xDrive) is standard on the vehicle, which has a 0-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds.

There are two rows of Extended Merino Leather-trimmed seats in the cabin of the BMW 8 Series to accommodate four people. The front row consists of a pair of 20-way power multi-function seats that include power adjustment functions for shoulder and thigh support, 2-way manual lateral adjustment, and a memory system. Both seats face a leather-wrapped sports-style steering wheel. For comfort and convenience inside the vehicle, the M850i includes a micro-filter ventilation system, keyless entry, a vehicle and key memory system, a Live Cockpit Professional system that comprises a 12.3-inch digital instrumental display and a 10.25-inch central-information head-up display, auto-dimming rearview and drivers-side exterior mirrors, a universal garage-door opener, a Wi-Fi hotspot that includes a 3 GB or three-month trial (whichever ends first), two USB 2.1 ports for charging portable devices, Apple CarPlay smartphone integration for a one-year trial, iDrive 7.0 for infotainment integration, Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone operation and data streaming, 20 GB of multimedia storage, voice-activated navigation ability, HD Radio technology, a one-year trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 16-speaker 600-watt Harman Kardon surround-sound system.

Also standard is the Connected Package Professional suite for functions and services that include real-time traffic information, stolen vehicle recovery, remote door unlock, on-street parking availability, and the BMW Connected app to use from your smartphone. Restraint and cushioning in the event of a crash are provided by a pair of front impact airbags, two front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and a pair of roof-mounted side curtain airbags lining both rows for head protection. Other safety features on the BMW 8 Series include dynamic stability and traction control, brake fade compensation and drying, anti-lock braking, automatic high beams, a surround-view camera with 3D graphics, park distance control, LED daytime running lights, the Active Driving Assistant suite (which includes blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation, and lane departure warning), BMW Assist eCall for automatic collision notification, the Active Protection System to automatically prepare the car for mitigating injury upon detecting imminent accidents, and an anti-theft system.
