THE APPEAL
Famous for manufacturing tractors and agricultural equipment, the International Harvester Corporation also produced and sold trucks to farmers and city businesses all over the world.
Built from 1937-1940, the D-15 model stake farm truck was a dependable and rugged choice for many commercial uses.
This rare and handsome Canadian example was restored some time ago, has clearly been well maintained, and benefits from recent sympathetic upgrades such as 12-volt electrics and improved lighting to keep it reliable and safe on the road.
Well known in commercial vehicle circles, this International Harvester has taken part in various events including the HCVS London-Brighton run and in 2021 was driven 350 miles to the Newark Tractor Show loaded with a small International Farmall tractor - happily with no issues.

Built by the International Harvester Company, Hamilton, Ontario, it spent much of its life in Alberta having passed through the ownership of three families.
The truck was dismantled in 1978 (with 53,000 miles on the clock) and completely restored to it’s original specification at a cost of more than $10,000. It then pretty much became a museum-piece until 1997.
The current owner and collector shipped it from Vancouver, via the Panama Canal, finally reaching Tilbury Docks in March 2015.

THE MECHANICS
- Presentable engine compartment
- Original 3,472 cc / 213 cu in Green Diamond, straight-six, flathead, side-valve petrol engine
- 4-speed non-synchro gearbox
- Dynator alternator conversion
- Electric fuel pump
- New old stock distributor
- Single wiper arrangement ineffective and could be improved
- Fuel tank internally treated with POR15
- Renewed front and rear brake shoes with good quality riveted linings by Orca
- Replacement Dave Mac balanced prop shaft
- Hand-made stainless steel exhaust
- Slight leak from exhaust manifold
- No abnormal oil leaks for a vehicle of this age
The owner informs us that the engine “starts easily and ticks over like the proverbial sewing machine once warmed up”. It will comfortably cruise at 40 mph all day “and is not too harsh or noisy”. The steering is direct with no wander and the clutch and gearbox are fine, although the gearbox is a little rattily in first and second.
The majority of recent upgrades and improvements have been carried out by respected specialist Jeff Marshall at Fins ’n Chrome, Titchfield, Hampshire.
A previously notified fault with the Dynator alternator has been resolved. The brake adjusters will need some fettling.
SUMMARY
This relatively compact and practical D-15 truck exudes 1930’s charm, and is, in the owner’s words, “a proper farm truck”.
Overall, it is in great condition considering it’s age. The chassis and tinwork are very solid indeed, the cab is a pleasant and comfortable place to be, and the reliable mechanicals should get you there and back.
An unusual and unique vehicle, it is the perfect contender to drive to historic and agricultural events where it is bound to attract considerable interest. It could even be an ideal business marketing vehicle. Either way, this truck should be fun and rewarding to own.
