Toyota has announced a revised Land Cruiser for 2010, with a single 3.0 litre diesel engine option in the UK.
If you want a tank that will go anywhere – dressed up as a full size SUV – you choose the Toyota Land Cruiser. No other off-roaders – including those from Land Rover – have quite the reputation the Land Cruiser has for go-anywhere ability. And bullet-proof doesn’t even start to describe the Land Cruiser. After the apocalypse all that will remain will be cockroaches and Land Cruisers.
But times move on, and Toyota has decided a modest facelift and a re-vamp is called for, and they have released details of the changes for their most iconic model, which will launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week, and go on sale in the UK in December.
There are a number of styling tweaks inside and out to keep the venerable Land Cruiser fresh, including a revised dash and trim and tweaks to the bumpers and lights. But the biggest news – at least in the UK – is that the Land Cruiser will come with just one engine option – the 3.0 litre D-4D diesel with a five-speed auto-box. This 171bhp unit will come packaged in a five-door body and will deliver 34.9mpg and 0-60mpg in around 11.5 seconds. Other markets will get a three door option and an alternative engine – a 4.0-litre V6 Dual VVT-i petrol engine.
Toyota has sorted then suspension for better feel and on-road comfort, and fitted KDSS, which adjusts the roll bars for optimum handling. The body has been stiffened and the air suspension on the range-topping LC5 version gets a choice of three damper settings. The Land Cruiser also gets Multi-terrain Select, which automatically controls power and braking to optimise performance for different types of off-road surfaces and feeds views from around the car to the in-dash screen from four cameras.
The 2010 Land Cruiser comes with three rows of seats to seat up to seven (option on the LC3) and a whole raft of storage spaces. Front and rear AirCon is included, as is high-end audio and a built-in hard drive.
The Land Cruiser is a one-off purchase. You’ll never need to buy another as it will outlive you. So if you want to go anywhere you may as well get the latest version with all the toys.
It won’t get you there very quickly. But it will always get you there. Wherever ‘there’ is.
