1933 Plymouth PC Sedan

1933 Plymouth PC Sedan

The Plymouth automobile made its debut in 1923 as a division of Chrysler that would produce lower price point automobiles that Ford and Chevrolet dominated at that time. The first Plymouth automobiles produced were a bit pricier than the Fords or Chevys, but they offered more technological improvements not available from the other two manufacturers. In 2001 the Plymouth division was dissolved.

For consignment, a 4 door sedan version of a Plymouth PC, the shorter wheelbase model, that has been modified as a street rod. Major engine improvements have been made to the V8 which has long since replaced the inline 6-cylinder engine that came with the car from the showroom.

Exterior
An all steel body that has been uncut and unmodified in any way. The original suicide doors hang straight with good gaps and the hood side panels have been removed but are included with the purchase. A black vinyl roof has been well fitted as technology at the time could not produce a large enough viable sheet of steel, and the firewall presents with its factory stampings. The paint is about 10 years old; however, it presents beautifully, and was most likely sprayed with a 2-stage system. The brilliant Torch Red color shows very small imperfections when inspected closely, however there are absolutely no major dents or scratches worth noting, as well as no areas of major body filler being used. Steel fenders and small black rubber coated running boards adorn each side. All the chrome and brite work present very nice, with little to no flaws. Overall the exterior could be improved in minute ways, but there really is nothing worth noting. 15" Truespoke wire wheels wrapped in blackwall rubber are attached on all 4 corners and a pair of spare Truespoke wheels are included.

Interior
Reusing some parts from the original car, a beautiful two tone bench seat wrapped in gray cloth, with lighter gray inserts shows minimal wear and a matching bench seat sprawls between the rear doors. The door panels are finished the same way as the pair of benches, and complimentary gray color carpeting abounds. A Lokar shifter has been added and is within the driver's reach. Fronting the dash is an aftermarket black tilt steering column topped with a leather wrapped LeCarra 4 spoke steering wheel. The dash front shows in a mirror finish of Torch Red and houses VDO gauges within a brushed aluminum oval. A good condition headliner frames the roof and wraps around to the rear of the interior roof, “B” pillars and rear window. A roof mounted console is present and holds an AM/FM radio.

Drivetrain
A dare to be different Ford 302ci V8 now resides under the hood. This mill was rebuilt by Ford and has logged a mere 4000 miles since. A single 4bbl carburetor sits atop an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and is topped by a chrome air cleaner assembly. With polished aluminum valve covers, wire looms, chrome alternator and polished AC components, there is a good reason as to why this hot rod has no hood. It's the “look”. Attached is a Ford C4 3-speed automatic transmission bolted to the back of the mill and sends power back to a Ford 8" rear axle.

Undercarriage
This car rides on its original frame, which is straight, rust-free, in overall great condition, and is painted black. This frame provides an excellent backdrop for the clean rust-free painted floor pans. A Mustang II suspension and disc brakes makes up the front. The rear has drum brakes and a leaf spring arrangement. Dual exhausts snake their way to a chromed tipped tail pipes after curving around the like new fuel tank.

Drive-Ability
It fired right up and has an amazing amount of power with that rebuilt 302ci V8 under the hood. It handled the test track with ease, good acceleration, straight quick stopping and good handling, although on tight S turns at speed the front felt a bit squirrelly. All functions were working.

This beautiful build with all its chromed and red glory, is a true old school hot rod. Having a Ford engine in a Plymouth is a conversation piece to say the least, and all details make this rod very drivable, but it has nice power, which was the builder's intent, and maybe make a little noise to awaken the neighbors on a Sunday morning drive!
