1968 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

1968 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

From boulevard cruising to backroad bruising, it's hard to find a better all-around performer than a Corvette. And once Chevrolet firmly established the brand as a global tour de force, it began a constant quest to achieve increasing levels of performance and desirability. No generation of Corvette emphasizes the transition from muscle car to all-out sports car better than the C3.

This beautiful Corvette with a very nice color combination, graces our halls here at Classic Auto Mall. It stands out as something very much original 1968 looking, has a numbers matching drivetrain and those nice chrome bumpers and black rockers just adds to the exterior Corvette mystique. Purchased by our consignor in 2009 used sparingly, this purported 3-owner 1st year C3 'Vette has had some recent service completed and is title verified as actual miles, however the title reads about 1,700 more miles than are on the odometer. Plus, with the removable roof panels you have yourself the closest thing one can get to a convertible without a canvas roof.

Exterior
A 984 code, Safari Yellow correct color match shows very nicely with only a few minor cracks and inclusions with the largest crack being under the rear of the driver's rear quarter panel. The sculpted body is highlighted on the front quarters by shark-like gill venting sans chrome accenting. The hidden headlight grille and a spear like hood bump is long and perfect. A black rocker cover with a strip of stainless accenting above is reserved for the rockers. On the back the curvaceous rear quarters frame the deep dish 15" Chevrolet rally wheels and red stripe tires. The rear has a split chromed bumper, roll pan tailpipes with bezels, and 4 round pristine taillights. The 2 body matched fiberglass roof panels can be removed to expose the chrome T-bar giving you plenty of wind in the hair excitement. The look and stance of this year is quickly becoming one of my favs, along with the rounded look of the 76-77 versions.

Interior
Black vinyl in this 1968 model year, covers the buckets, door panels, and dash. This creates a beautiful combination to the exterior yellow. Slight fading and wear is seen on the drivers chair in the form of stitching separation, however overall it presents in good condition. The center console is wrapped in black and uses aluminum highlighting as well as some black and a large chrome shift knob and heater slides and wheels to set everything off. Also, a wood steering wheel adds a nice touch to the overall interior. The black carpeting throughout appears to be original and shows with some minor fading, particularly in the storage area behind the seats. Nice deep inset gauges for the driver as well as the cluster of 5 in the center keep you up to date of the car's vitals along with the factory AM/FM radio to keep you up to date on the latest music of your choice.

Drivetrain
A L79 327/350hp numbers matching mill is backed by a numbers matching Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission, residing in an overall clean engine bay. This high horsepower orange mill is fed by a rebuilt Quadrajet 4bbl carburetor to keep the air and fuel in check. The rear axle weighs in as a 3.70 Positraction based on the AO stamping code. Note the rear is also dated coded, (AO 51568), to the car and is most likely the original unit. Power steering is a noted option and is much appreciated.

Undercarriage
A gander underside reveals 4-wheel disc brakes, a good condition frame and floor construction as well as a clean suspension. Suspension is independent coil springs for the front and a fully independent unit on the rear with transverse leaf springs. The exhaust is nice and clean rust free.

Drive-Ability
I took our consignors advice to heart by removing the roof panels and looking out over that long hood and listening to the music of the V8, I knew I was in for a fun drive. I liken this test drive to driving a piece of fine art sculpture, and it performed as it should on all fronts, especially the pin you in your seat acceleration which shocked even my muscle car aficionado and partner in crime. All was good on our drive and all functions worked just as designed but we did note the driver's headlight was a little slower than the passengers to rotate up.

Just a very nice looking, well sorted 1st year C-3 Stingray that runs and sounds like it did in '68. If you are in the market for a well-equipped early Corvette that's ready to cruise, do not hesitate on this one…When the shark bites….!
