1939 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

1939 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

Tired of going to all those car shows and looking row after row of the same rodded Fords? You can almost become lulled to sleep with the redundancy of it all. Well, fold up your chair, and put those walking shoes on, because you will have to walk a long way to find another one like this one.

For consignment, a 1939 version of the Bowtie Master Deluxe in non rodded original restored condition. She's is a finished project, but with the design and technology from 1939 all buttoned up and ready to turn the key to both go and show.

Exterior
With its lovely design of the front V shaped grille flanked by bullet style cased headlights and rounded fenders which stand guard on either side of the pointed and rounded hood, we are firmly in art deco territory, which was all the rage since the mid 30's and continued well into the 40's. That grille is presented beautifully with its horizontal ribs curving to the fenders. A nice Chevrolet badge is on the front as well. The front bumper frames the bottom and has stood the test of time retaining its shine and vertical art deco push bars along with yellow glassed driving lights for some extra pop. At the other end of the Buck Rogers rocket styled hood ornament is a split front windshield. The doors with well minded gaps, not unlike the rest of the steel body, are bathed in black which shows as an older respray but retains its shine. Up top the roof is looking nice and smooth. On the running board sides which cozy up to rounded front and rear fenders which the rear ones meet up with the trunk line and form the rounded aero back of this machine. Small bullet style taillights are hanging off the sides of the rear quarters. Just a few faults in the paint throughout and a snazzy red pinstriped spear runs along the beltline of the car. Chevrolet badged moon caps highlight black steel wheels and thin white wall tires.

Interior
Nicely preserved mohair panels cover the doors and serve as a background for the shiny bakelite knobs, levers, and cranks. A rounded art deco styled front bench covered in more tan mohair and sporting some buttons and tan piping stretches from door to door. This bench is very nicely preserved and has a split back for easier access to the rear bench that has 2 cushions for the seats that are removable. The dash uses wonderful art deco styling of rectangular instrumentation with a neat green background. Brown and tan steel mix to make the shapely dash which is fronted by a big cream bakelite steering wheel which is missing its chrome horn ring and a modern AM/FM/Cassette stereo is mounted below the dash in front of the passenger. Green carpeting is noted throughout and above is a nice mohair tan headliner.

Drivetrain
Opening the hood we note a 216.5ci inline 6-cylinder with a 1-barrel carburetor on the side. This engine appears recently restored and looks quite proper with its gray finish. On the back is a 3-speed manual transmission sending power to a 4.22 geared rear axle.

Undercarriage
The steel has a coating of surface rust on untreated members but is structurally sound. The flooring and body hangers are solid as is framing. Drum brakes are on all 4 corners and suspension is independent coil springs for the front, and leaf springs for the back. A single exhaust system takes care of the spent fossils, and we note the clutch inspection cover is missing giving a very industrial and steampunk look to the underside.

Drive-Ability
This car fired right up and performed beautifully. No problems on the functionality front, and the interior is comfy in its mohair state. A pleasure to drive and it was nice and relaxing to just have a simple stroll around our often imitated but never duplicated test track.

All in all a nice older restoration of a car that was well cared for and enjoyed. A true original showing well in our hallowed halls and standing the test of time.
