1966 Ford Falcon Futura

1966 Ford Falcon Futura

This year you get all of Falcon's famous thrift and handling ease wrapped up in a brand-new package! America's all-time economy champ still saves you money every day, every mile. But look how Falcon's changed! Beneath this bold, new long-hood/short-deck design lies one of the toughest cars on the road. Beefy, integral body-frame structure makes Falcon stronger, more durable. Longer wheelbase, wider treads and numerous suspension improvements make it ride like no other compact. Inside Falcon's bigger too, with more room than ever for six. For '66 there are 10 brand new Falcons to choose from. Heading the list is a snappy, new Futura Sports Coupe. Bucket seats, deluxe wheel covers, a sporty accent stripe and the lively 200-cu. in. Six are standard on this one. For plenty of comfort and luxury, there are the Futura 4-Door Sedan and Club Coupe with plush interiors, wider door openings and greater shoulder room. The Falcon 4-Door Sedan and Club Coupe – two of America's lowest-priced cars – feature good looks, comfort and convenience. And to round out the line there are five versatile wagons. For consignment a Falcon Futura with a replacement V8, a Holley carb and a factory 4-speed. This is a somewhat rare car due to the fact that it's a 4-speed car from the factory, and thanks to our conscientious consignor this not oft seen model has been well preserved during his 30 years of ownership. This one is a driver, but presents nicely, and drives fab!

Exterior
Bedecked in 25 year old respray of dark green metallic this car has no rust, however, signs of prior bodywork at the bottom of the doors are starting to make a peek-a-boo. The paint presents very well and is miles deep. Take a deep dive into the fit and finish and you will be impressed. If you squint closely, you can see traces of the Mustang in the Futura, as you should since they're both penned from the same chassis, but the Falcon not having quite as exaggerated long nose, short deck line. A stainless rocker trim runs from wheel well to wheel well and ends at the rear wheel well which highlights the wheel arch molding perfectly. The back panel of this car utilizes turbine style round tail lights with integrated round reverse lighting, which flank a shiny badged Falcon script within an aluminum rear trim panel. Both bumpers are pristine as are the side badging and shiny aluminum grille assembly. 14" chrome Cragar wheels and raised white letter BF Goodrich tires are on all 4 corners.

Interior
Swinging one of the doors, it immediately shows off with its black metal top sill, black vinyl panel and black cloth insert which is highlighted by a gold trimming. A handle and a window crank in shiny condition are in this sea of textural and visual eye candy. A front low back vinyl split bench seat in black with tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters have a black piping separating them. This carries through to the rear seats, where see a bench version, in showroom condition. A chrome Hurst shifter with obligatory T-handle rises from the center hump and is perfectly point for shifting gears. The dash front in black with chrome trimmings and brushed aluminum matte finish panels houses the factory round gauges which are flanked by the wiper and heater slides on each side. An original radio which still works, is seen in the dash and on top we note a crack free padded dash topper. Slightly faded back carpet covers the floors, and an original steering wheel, well preserved, fronts this dash.

Drivetrain
A replacement engine, which is a circa 1968 302ci V8 is seen sitting in a nicely preserved unrestored engine bay. Within this mill is a Manley camshaft and handling the fuel and air mixture is a Holley 4bbl carburetor atop an Offenhauser intake manifold. Ribbed aluminum valve covers are on for the dress up as is a K&N chrome air cleaner assembly. A 4-speed Toploader manual transmission is on back and a Ford 8-inch TracLoc rear axle with 3.50 gears puts the power to the pavement.

Undercarriage
All cleaned up and obviously garaged most of its life, this car has no rust, is very sound structurally with a mix of patina, road dirt and factory undercoating. Handling the ride is an independent front with coil springs suspension, a leaf sprung back suspension, and drum brakes all around. A dual exhaust with headers and glasspack style mufflers end in polished pipes peeking out in the rear of this car, but underneath are just fiiiine-O-mite!

Drive-Ability
A super quick starter, smooth idle while she warms up, and we're off! Nice power and pickup, fine handling and no inoperable devices to speak of, a truly fine ride, and it truly is a blast to drive with the 4-speed on the floor.

To sum it up, a nice example of the 66 Falcon with the Futura option added along with a factory 4-speed manual. Well cared for on the exterior and interior fronts and all around a great solid driver and cruiser. Come and get it!
