1968 Pontiac GTO Hardtop

1968 Pontiac GTO Hardtop

In 1964, a group of passionate and slightly rebellious men at General Motors' Pontiac Motor Division led by John Z. Delorean built a car that not only launched an entirely new market, but also started an automotive revolution.  The car was the Pontiac GTO, and it quickly became a thing of legend.  The GTO is the car that's widely credited as the first true American muscle car, and it was built with a formula that hot rodders and racers had already been using for decades — a bigger engine in a lighter car.

For consignment, a restored GTO with PHS documentation and build sheet.  It is this writer's favorite version of the “goat” and this one is mostly original in its design save for the “Judge“ spoiler in back.  The car is a respray of the factory color with some custom touches, and in my opinion is better than factory, as it has more black and silver added to the original Aleutian blue.

Exterior
Aptly named for several reasons, the first of which is the car has had its steel panels meticulously massaged to perfection, coated with a very nicely applied Aleutian blue but with more black and silver added to it so it is a touch custom.  This paint bathes straight rust free steel panels that have a coke bottle design on the front and rear quarters.  Hidden headlights create a nearly seamless front egg crate grille, and it sports a GTO badging just below the driver's side of center.  With its recognizable Pontiac “beak” up front, and dual scooped hood everyone who sees this car comments on its wonderful color, and it is a true stunner.  Curved body panels do so very gracefully and on the back, the slow gently sloping rear glass gives the car its “pony” look.  Remember we are in the era of the coke bottle design, and this car is probably the one that named it.  A nice shiny rocker trim works its way around the car, and even makes itself thinner at each wheel well, adding a nice framing to  the 14” PMD 5 spoked rally II wheels.  These wheels are wrapped by raised white lettered BFG Radial T/A tires in 225/70R14 form.   All your competition will see if you race them is red, that of your tail lights that is, which are inset into the bumper with the Judge spoiler directly above.

Interior
Inviting you inside is a new interior in blue vinyl covering the door panels, front low back buckets, and rear bench, as well as the padded dash top.  All these chairs and panels are stitched and are very nice looking, much like showroom, with no wear or faults, just '68 Pontiac.  A very clean original design dash fronts this collection of vinyl, and houses the correct gauges, and all in working condition and inset into a wood appliqué dash front.  A small center console site between the buckets and houses a Hurst ball topped chrome shifter.  Carpeting is all excellent blue short pile looped variety and shows very clean.  The headliner is tight blue vinyl and near perfect.  This interior is just beautiful and not unlike the exterior.

Drivetrain
Take a 400ci L67 V8 that has 350hp from the factory, is numbers matching, and stuff it into a wonderfully clean engine bay and you have this example!  Top it with a factory 4-barrel carburetor and throw in a numbers matching Muncie M20 4-speed manual tranny on back that eases power via a solid driveshaft to a 10 bolt 3.55 Safe-T-Track rear axle with a 4-pinion center.  It presents with a polished air cleaner covering with 400-4 badging and chromed valve coverings.  Supple hoses and wiring, a like new master cylinder, and clean like new radiator, and the power plant area is complete and ready to make some smoke from the rear tires.

Undercarriage
Simply put, clean, mean, shiny black, and you'll love what you're “seen”.  No rust here to worry about, just shiny black straight steel and a new fuel tank, with dual exhaust and Flowmaster mufflers in like new form.  Independent  coil spring front suspension, and a 4 link with coil springs for the rear.  Power disc brakes in front, and power drums in the rear.  Now I have stars in my eyes, and a Pontiac arrow beckons me for the test drive.

Drive-Ability
Just getting in you can tell instantly you are in a quality build as the seats have plenty of padding underneath their shiny skins.  The car fired right up, idled smoothly, and was rarin' to go.  A push of your boot towards the firewall, and you are off like a prom dress.  Nice sound, and just a quality restoration with no creeks or squeaks.  All functions are working swimmingly.

The straight panels bathed in that beautiful custom Aleutian blue, iconic Pontiac muscle car design, with lots of muscle, and all wrapped up nicely ready for you to turn the key, and you will be seeing green, oh sorry… custom Aleutian blue!
