1929 Ford Model A Pickup

1929 Ford Model A Pickup

The Ford Model A can be found in many iterations: coupe, to a roadster, to a sedan to a pickup.  Henry Ford had a solid base in the Model A and appeased the masses with various options on that frame.  Also, as with many older versions of cars, so many visual customization modifications have been done, that the original showroom look has been long gone.

In the case of this car though, mostly original intent as well as actual visual parts to this build have been retained.  The beneficiary of a restoration finished up in 2020 and built to be driven, this truck presents nicely.  It shows wonderfully with very nice paint, some wood ad ons for the bed and for an 80-year-old truck, it's looking better than showroom new.

Exterior
With its utilitarian body design, straight panels bathed in pale green and nice fenders covered in black it all comes together as a pickup.  Overall the paint has nearly no faults, allowing this truck to fall into the shower and driver category.  A fully restored wooden bed with metal overlays shows a few minor signs of its prior working life with a few dings to the front bed bulkhead.  Bed floor matching oak planks grace the upper steel sides of the outward canted bed and add extra cargo capacity.  Not that you'll be hauling any hay bales or produce, just show winning trophies.  Simple 19-inch black wire wheels can be seen through to drum brakes painted black and chromed hub cover.   A black vinyl visor and top is seen over the cab and a vinyl textured roof is present and in good condition.  The easily recognizable chrome shrouded grille and fender mounted and tie bar attached headlights lead the way.  A shiny chrome twin bar bumper hovers below and on the driver's right we note a glossy black horn.  Louvered hood cowling is near flawless for the center hinged hood and highly polished caps cover the fuel tank and radiator.  Just a thing of pure beauty.

Interior
The smooth saddle colored vinyl door panels cover the doors and have shiny window cranks and door pulls to brighten them up.  A like new saddle vinyl bench stretches across the small cab.  In the center of the pale green painted metal dash is the Ford “mask” style gauge cluster, and to stage left is the original steering wheel which is in very good condition and holds the timing and hand throttle adjustment levers.  On the floor is a simple rubber floor mat that is fairly clean.  Utilitarian beauty at its finest.

Drivetrain
Believed to be the original engine lurking under the cowls, we see a restored in olive green 4-cylinder in 201ci form pump out 40hp.  A 1-barrel carburetor is atop, and a 3-speed manual transmission is on the back.  3.77 gears are in the banjo style rear axle.

Undercarriage
All nicely restored with only minor surface rust in sight on the rear axle and front suspension.  Black paint is on solid frame, running boards, body hangers and crossmembers.  This nice black makes for a well-done undercarriage that is meant to be used and about the only real flaw to note is some road dirt spatter here and there.  An intact single exhaust system is installed.  We note transverse leaf springs on both ends for suspension as well as mechanical drum brakes.

Driveability
Once one knows the tricks to starting a Model A it's a breeze, and I'm well versed in this operation.  This truck drives like a truck!  No power steering, power brakes, and simple suspension, which is part of its charm, and is certainly not meant to be negative.  A pleasurable drive was had around the Classic Auto Mall test track.

Overall in great condition thanks to a well thought out and executed restoration and meant to be driven and enjoyed.  An early farm truck by early Ford manufacturing, now offered here in all its glory at the Classic Auto Mall.
