2007 Ford Mustang GT California Special Coupe

In mid-February 1968, the California Ford Dealers began to market a factory-built, limited-edition Mustang, called the GT/CS, or "California Special".  The hope was for a targeted production run of 5,000; however, only 4,118 were made, including 251 units that were remarketed in Denver, Colorado, as "High Country Special '68".  Production ran for only 5.5 months from mid-February 1968 to early August 1968.  This was all in response to the new pony car competition for the upcoming 1968 model year from the Camaro, Firebird, Javelin, and even from Ford's Torino and Mercury Cougar.   The state of California, alone, was responsible for the sales of 20% of all Mustangs and Thunderbirds in the country, which gave the regional dealers there the clout to ask for and market their own Mustang.  Lee Grey was the Southern California district sales manager for Ford and he was looking for something unique to spark the sales of Mustangs in Los Angeles.  Ford dealers had tried promotions like the "1967 Rainbow Colored Mustangs", as well as by adding accessories and options to dress up cars for public view.  The objective was to make the Mustangs sold in California unique and to look "custom" made, thus differentiating them from the standard models available elsewhere.  As a tribute to the 1968 California Special, Ford added a limited production factory GT/California Special in 2007.  The GT/CS option adds 2 tone seats, (Dove or Parchment inserts), unique floor mats, side stripes, side scoops, 18" polished aluminum wheels, rolled exhaust tips, a faux gas cap, (with words "California Special"), lowered front bumper/valance and unique rear bumper.

Exterior
Redfire Metallic bathes this kewl Kalifornia kruiser and is nearly perfect still looking factory.  This West Coast dream machine features some throwbacks such as the hockey stick cove, B pillar GT50-esque ducted rear quarter windows, fastback styling, menacing inset round foglights and of course the galloping steed on the blackened grille center.  A nod to the California Special history is seen in the form of a black side tape stripe that gently fades into the Redfire at the rear of each door.  A faux hood scoop is on but the heart of this pony is fed air by a JLT cold air intake.  On back, a spoiler in body matching Redfire and the triple tail lights take us back to the 1960's styling that is now iconic.  Dual exhaust creates the zoom zoom sound and tinted glass makes it look more menacing, although it really needs no help in this department!  Just immaculate in this presentation.

Interior
I wish I was special, you're so F+*@in special, and so is this immaculate interior in Dove gray and Black.  Starting with the sporty door panels and moving inside to the Black leather bolstered and Dove Gray inserted high backs, some power, some manual for the adjustments and both being heated.  These sporty chairs are fronted by a snazzy faux carbon fiber covered dash with icy blue readout instrumentation.  Deep rounds just like the late 60's styling are in and are flanking a digital panel in the center with the fuel, water temp, oil pressure and battery gauges.  In the dash center is a multi disc AM/FM Shaker 500 stereo which attempts to drown out the sound of the under hood monster, but fails!  Also chrome trimmed eyeball vents and climate knobs and buttons for the front seat heaters reside in this dash.  These items melt into the central console which has a Pro 5.0 short throw shift lever, cup holders and a padded topped armrest/glovebox.   In back are 2 more leather bucket seats in 2 plus 2 form and have plenty of bolster padding so hold on, and belt in.  Clean black carpeting is on the bottoms and above is a perfect gray headliner.

Drivetrain
The 4.6-liter 3 valve V8 engine produces 300hp and possibly a little more with help from a JLT cold air intake and 3 tune equipped SCT flash tuner.  EFI feeds the fossils and a 5-speed manual Tremec 3650 transmission and a Ford 8.8 inch 3.55 Trac-Loc rear axle spins the rear tires.  JBA long tube headers and Ford Racing exhaust aids the big exhale but the exhaust system is sans catalytic converters.

Undercarriage
Clean, mean, and pristine, with all the latest tech to keep your rubber to road.  No leaks, no drips, no excuses.  Painted calipers, drilled and slotted rotors for the 4 wheel disc brakes are seen, and in front independent coil springs are providing the ride.  In back a 3 link, coil springs and a panhard bar setup is on.  Just showroom new underneath

Drive-Ability
It's a screamer, it's all like new, and it's a kick in the ass when you push the loud pedal.  All working functions, and a true pleasure to drive and smile with a Cheshire cat grin while doing so.  Go baby go!

This low mileage 1 owner car is barely broken in.  This powerhouse is offered at a competitive price, deserves a close look because you can get a lot of muscle for your money.  Be the only one on the block with a truly ass kickkin' low mileage iconic Ford Mustang GT California Special, a real nod back to the history of the pony car.
