2001 Ford F150 SVT Lightning

2001 Ford F150 SVT Lightning

Various media outlets had given the SVT Lightning the 'fastest pickup' crown ever since the second-generation truck's introduction in 1999.  It became a matter of official record when a stock 2003 Lightning reached 147 miles per hour on a test track.  A redesigned five-spoke alloy wheel, satin-chrome interior door handles and two brand-new paint colors Sonic Blue Clearcoat, (replacing True Blue), and Dark Shadow Grey, (replacing Silver Metallic), were introduced for 2003.  Plus, thanks to some new suspension tuning, Lightning's payload rating was increased to 1,350 pounds.

With the heritage of SVT being conceived in 1991 and officially launched in 1992, the masterful minds of horsepower have had their fingers in everything from the Mustang to the Focus, from the Contour to the never released Thunderbird, and naturally the powers that be could not forget the veritable F150.  With the first generation stretching from the 1993 to the 1995 model year then the second generation taking over in 1999 and staying in production until 2004, these limited run trucks are well known, although not always easy to come by.  Now gracing the floors of our Hallowed Hall and on consignment, a Ford Lightning from 2001 that IS all that and a bag of chips!  This truck sports 55,932 actual miles, is one of 1,908 Lightnings built in code UA Black for the model year and has been treated to a host of performance modifications by the well known Lightning and Mustang performance shop Johnny Lightning Performance right out of New Providence, PA.  The host of modifications to improve on performance resulted in 619rwhp on pump gas and we can't forget the over $1,500 in billet parts as well as the killer custom sound system, and it's all buttoned up for some fast hauling…of ass!

Exterior
Leading the way for this coke bottle sided, aero clad bathed in Darth Vader-esque Black truck is a clean Street Scene charcoal mesh grille sans logoing.   A wide curvaceous Harwood cowl induction hood and the large running light inserted lower bumper with yet another mesh grille are seen up front as well.  HID headlights rest within the black grille surround and do a nice job of breaking up all that black.  Moving along, the sides are showing well minded gaps and the rockers have extended panels to help with more aero as well as good looks.  The bumped out rear quarters leave a small accommodation for a “step side” cove in front of the fender.   Also, the rear quarters seamlessly melt into the rear bumper and gate setup which is all body matching Black as well.  Covering the Bedrug lined gray felted bed floor and sides on the inside is a Gaylord lockable and liftable black fiberglass cover.  All this curvaceous truck shaped steel is bathed in the factory applied Black and is looking just fab without a ding, dent or signs of rust.  20-inch powdercoated black Boze forged Twisted Fatal 5 wheels with metallic red marbling are wrapped in 275/40R18 rubber all around from the 50th week of 2018.  Get your umbrella and slicker....there's a storm a brewin' in our Hallowed Halls.

Interior
Clamoring to get to the interior before the deluge hits, we open the doors with a “flash” and see plenty of light gray molded vinyl which forms the door panels.   A seamless speaker, storage bins in the bottom, and some panels frame a smaller dark gray molded vinyl insert with some black panels housing the upgraded to billet door locks, window toggles, and the mirror adjuster.  All sleek and nicely seamless in its design down to the billet threshold sill.  The seats are power adjustable for the driver and are rounded over very sporty high back buckets.  These are covered in gray suede, and sport black leather insert panels which are broken up by the gray.  Form and figure are key to these great lookers within the cab.  A fold down center console is between the buckets and provides a large storage compartment or can be left folded up to make room for a 3rd.  The dash in gray with carbon fiber surrounds houses white faced gauges and in the center are some billet temp control knobs and the upgraded Pioneer touchscreen AM/FM/CD stereo with navigation.  The output of this stereo has been upgraded with a MTX Thunderforms subwoofer box behind the seats with 2 12" MTX Terminator 4ohm subs and is powered by an Eclipse amp, Infinity tweeters, and a mid powered by a Rockford Fosgate Punch 100 amp with capacitor.  The stereo has been treated to these upgrades so it can be heard over the roar of the built V8 under the hood, which we're going to explore next!

Drivetrain
5.4 Liters of SOHC supercharged V8 are shoehorned into the engine bay.  But not just any 5.4 liter.  This unit is courtesy of Johnny Lightning Performance, (JLP), and has nearly doubled the output from stock, leaving this truck to make an amazing 619hp at the rear tires, all the while on pump gas.  Our consignor notes this block is good to 1000hp and helping achieve these numbers is a .020 overbore, Manley forged pistons, Manley H-beam rods, a Cobra Jet crankshaft and all ARP hardware.  Capping off the cylinders are a pair of Johnny Lightning Performance R cylinder heads that have been CNC ported and have JLP Stage 3 camshafts.  A ported lower intake gaps the bridge between the heads and just atop is mounted a polished 2.3 liter whipple supercharger being fed fuel by EFI and air from a cold air kit with a K&N filter and Accufab throttle body mounted at the large mouth inlet.  An Afco heat exchanger is on to keep the air charge cool and a new Kenne Bell fuel pump was installed 1,300 miles ago to ensure proper fuel delivery.  On the back is a JLP built 4R100 4-speed automatic capable of handling 1,000hp and the rear axle is a limited slip 3.73 version.   Everything under the hood is uber clean including the chicken ears billes aluminum covers, DG Motorsports carbon fiber covers, wire loom and wire terminal cover as well as billet add ons as far as the eye can see.  Lest we forget the snake decal on the hood underside is ready to strike and "pour" on the venom.

Undercarriage
Wonderfully preserved all shiny black framing and black and gray floor pans as well as other structural parts are all rust free.  Independent front suspension with coil springs is on aided by DJM upper and dropper lower tubular control arms in the front with Werster Chassis 2" lowering springs and in back are traditional leaf springs.  JBA headers snake down to a Bassani stainless mid pipe with 3" hi-flow converters and a Mac cat back exhaust with polished stainless tips is on for the exhale all looking great and clean while exiting through the passenger side ground-effects mid bed.  It was a real soaker but now the sun is coming out….

Drive-Ability
I entered this Lightning now knowing exactly what to expect as this isn't my first time riding out the storm in this model of truck but never in one make such power.  It fired right up with a thunderous roar, and it was off to the test track.  Here it had neck snapping acceleration, endless power from the supercharger, and great handling.  All functions were working, and the seats were wonderfully comfy.  Gotta luv leather and suede!

A seriously well cared for and seriously beefed up Ford Lightning pickup all in great condition with some tons of add ons, performance upgrades from JLP, factory paint which is miles deep, and enough curves to make Marilyn Monroe jealous. Sporty fairings all around and a covered bed I feel a road trip coming on!
