The Wartburg 353 was used for most types of government transportation agencies, including police cars. The production of the Wartburg 353 featured two releases, the first up until 1975 and the second through til 1988, now being fitted with a 'W' badge. Made up of these releases were two editions of the 353W with one from 1975 to 1983 and the other from 1983. This example is a true rarity.

Finished in dark green, this De-Luxe badged example presents well for its age and sets beautifully over the chrome exterior trim moulding. Being fitted with its original rims and door sill chrome-strip plating, this vehicle presents original with only 39,611 KM against clock.

The cabin showcases a design of simplicity paired with luxury. This 353W features a wood grain dash finish that is set over a beige-orange mixed trim, made up of leather and tweed. Displaying all original instrumentation, electric ignition and the De Luxe 'Boomerang' steering wheel, this example is a rarity in this form and would make an excellent addition to any classic car collection.

Featuring the economical 1.0L 3-cylinder engine, they were paired to a synchromesh 4-speed manual transmission equipped with a 'freewheel' that obviated the need to use the clutch between each gear change. The option to disable the freewheel was a switch under the steering column and this design became so popular that it stood as a symbolic feature to the 353 release, a feature that made shifting gears much easier and smoother.

The Wartburg 353 was an East German manufactured family sedan from 1966 through until 1988 and stood as Wartburg's longest production run. It was the creation of the former German BMW production facilities previously known as EMW under Soviet occupation. Featuring a design developed from a 1938 DKW, these vehicles were renowned for their engine being functional from only seven major moving parts, including the crankshaft.

These were also known for their well-equipped design and their front wheel drive configuration being ideal with the forward centre of gravity they offered. As of 1974 these vehicles received front disc brakes and safety changes to include roll belts, collapsible steering column and dual circuit hydraulic brakes.
