Ford worked to attract members of the Echo Boom or Millennial Generation (those born between the mid-1970s and 2000) by teaming with mountain bike manufacturer Kona USA to create the Kona Edition Focus. The new concept was introduced at the beginning of the U.S. launch cycle for the Focus at the 2000 Los Angles Auto Show. The Kona Edition was more than just a bike-and-car combo; with the help of Kona the car was given many unique features and designs.
Along with the car, it was equipped with the Kona Blast, a specially-designed hard-tail free-ride bike with a long-travel fork, dual disc brakes, platform pedals and other components. Kona helped with selecting the color palette and graphics treatment of the car, and the concept made Kona dealers an integral part of the program. Customers who purchased the Focus Special Edition were directed to their local Kona dealer for delivery of the bike.
In total, 5000 examples of the Kona Edition cars were built, available in Dirt Brown, CD Silver or Rainforest Green. An integrated, bolted-down luggage rack was included, as well as a fork-mount bike rack. Unique side moldings had molded-in Kona logo and bike tire treads, which were repeated in the heavy-duty rubber Kona floor mats. These special cars were also given Kona off-road, hard wear-inspired seat covers. They also rested on 16-inch, six-spoke aluminum wheels.
This Ford Focus Kona Edition Concept is powered by a 2-liter, dual overhead cam four-cylinder engine offering 130 horsepower. There is disc brakes in the front and hydraulic drums in the back.
In 2010 the car was offered for sale at the Sports & Classics of Monterey presented by RM Auctions where the lot was sold for the sum of $10,450 including buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2014
