    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Torque converter

"Truck was manufactured in Mexico. GM shipped them out with incorrect tranny fluid. This causes shuddering in torque converter prior to failure. I got truck used in May 2022 with 33,000 miles. Dealer fixed problem with 22 quart flush and fill last Fall. So far it has been working fine."

    Anonymous A., OH (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"After starting the trick and placing in gear, the truck doesn't want to move. When it does it slams into gear."

    Anonymous, GA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"This was the reason my transmission had to be replaced"

    Anonymous, ME (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
    Transmission rebuild or replacement

"The torque converter failed and pumped steel into the transmission causing a failure of both"

    Anonymous, AZ (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"At about 80000 miles the transmission started jerking , and making odd noises. The dealer said our torque converter was failing and we had to replace the transmission for 6000 dollars at a dealer"

    Anonymous, ME (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Transmission began slipping in 2022 and the dealership told me three times over the next year that they could find nothing wrong. While driving one day, the car just stopped. I had to have the entire transmission replaced"

    Anonymous, VA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Ever since buying the 2017 CHEVROLET Silverado, I've had questions about the transmission because it would downshift HARD into second gear. I mentioned it to the Chevrolet service department but they didn't seem to be too concerned. The issue continued. To make sure I was caring properly for the transmission, I would have it serviced every 50,000 miles ... more frequently than recommended. After a transmission service at 100,000 miles, we took off on a long road trip. At 107,000 miles near Dallas, TX (thousands of miles from home), it became evident that the transmission was not functioning properly. Thankfully, I was able to get it to a CHEVROLET dealership in the Dallas area ... and the transmission went out completely. They couldn't even move it out of their parking lot for a test drive. Of course, the transmission was out of warranty. The remedy was a transmission replacement for $5,800. Interestingly, the dealership where I took it "happened" to have the exact transmission on hand so they could replace mine quickly. Why would a dealership carry an inventory of replacement transmissions unless that particular one had a history of going out? I asked my Chevrolet service manager (back home, Asheville, NC) about this particular transmission ... were they discovering problems with them? He didn't answer definitively but said "maybe you should think about buying the extended warranty next time." I responded, "maybe I should think about buying a Ford next time." This sucks. I've NEVER had a transmission go out in 58 years of vehicle ownership. I think CHEVROLET has a problem with this particular transmission and is covering it up."

    Anonymous, NC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Pump failure in the transmission out of nowhere at 115000 miles. CHEVROLET was no help, and it was just out of warranty. I rarely tow anything bigger than a small boat or utility trailer so there was no reason it should have failed this quickly. I needed a full transmission replacement which took a couple of months"

    Anonymous A., WI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Happened about 1000 miles after buying. Rough shifting. Replaced transmission."

    Anonymous, OK (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Transmission had what I felt was a factory defect. The torque converter was thin, it warped and flaked pieces of metal, causing the transmission to quit. Had it rebuilt with a thicker better torque converter. On a different note I went through two transmissions on my Avalanche do to a pair of lines that rub on the metal and wore a hole in the transmission line."

    Anonymous, UT (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"The transmission problems with the 6 speed automatic are well documented. Chevrolet issued multiple technical service bulletins regarding it. Yet the information was not shared with consumers."

    Anonymous, NC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Display screen freezes up

"Display screen almost completely non responsive to touch. At times it randomly selects items from menus or beeps without any user input."

    Anonymous A., FL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
    Display screen goes blank

"2 years ago I had to replace the display due to same issue. Last week it started going blank and then come back on for no apparent reason"

    Anonymous, HI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"It appears that when starting my truck, it disrupts the infotainment start up with a momentary power skip. With my key in the 'start' position only, if I wait for the Infotainment system to fully cycle on and then start my truck, the issue does not tend to happen."

    Anonymous, GA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Wireless charger doesn't work on newer IPhones"

    Anonymous, ON (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"The touch screen started to have random "ghost" touches (I was not touching it, but it acted as though I was). Ultimately, its ability to detect touch died. The unit had to be replaced at around $800."

    Anonymous, FL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)
    Radio

"The touch screen has several dead spots for selecting pre-determined channels. This makes using Sirius radio nearly impossible. I ended up having to cancel Sirius as it was so cumbersome to use without the pre-determined settings."

    Anonymous A., FL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 6.2-L V8)

    Transmission Minor

Gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Rough shifting

"Since it was new it has never shifted reliably. Had several computer upgrades that eased the problem but never completely corrected irregular shifting."

    Anonymous, OH (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"After accelerating at a low and removing your foot from the gas there a big clunk in the rest differential."

    Anonymous, GA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"When taking off from a stop and driving slow, say a parking lot, the 1st to 2nd shift can feel like someone hit you from behind. This is going to take it's toll on the u-joints and rear-end components, wearing them out prematurely. I've asked about this at my local CHEVROLET dealer and they blew it off like it was nothing. But after reading about this I'm not the only one with this problem, with the eight speed transmission. And it's a simple fix if they were to re-program the transmission computer."

    Anonymous A., CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"When shifting gears, sometimes there is a loud noise and a rough shift like having difficulty going into a different gear."

    Anonymous, OH (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
    Transmission computer

"Since the vehicle was new it never up or down shifted properly. Several computer software updates helped but I had to seek these out from multiple complaints to the dealership and to date while better the vehicle still shifts irregularly."

    Anonymous, OH (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
