  • Performance

Chevy sets a high standard for the 2022 Silverado 3500 HD by promising that it’s the strongest and most capable Silverado HD ever built. Does it live up to the hype? Yes. The 3500 HD delivers on its promise with two powertrains that make the heavy-duty truck a beast on the road.

    Gasoline V8

Gas-powered trucks typically offer better payloads, which means they can haul heavier loads in the bed than their diesel-powered counterparts. This is true for the 2022 Silverado 3500 HD, which offers a maximum payload capacity of 7,442 pounds with its standard gasoline engine. The 6.6-liter V8 engine is paired with a rugged 6-speed automatic transmission for reliable performance. This combination delivers 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque to make the 3500 HD quick to accelerate and fun to drive even when you’re hauling a heavy load. How does this gas-powered engine compare to the 3500 HD’s diesel powertrain? The differences are dramatic.

    Duramax Turbodiesel

Hauling equipment in the bed of the truck and towing a heavy load with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch are vastly different as the distribution of weight moves from the truck’s axles to the trailer itself. This distinction is why Chevy gives drivers a choice between gas and diesel powertrains. The available Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 engine maximizes the truck’s towing capability. Mated to a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission, the diesel churns out 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque to give the truck the muscle needed to tow a jaw-dropping 36,000 pounds.

  • Capability

A white 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500HD is shown from the side towing a large anvil.

The 2022 Silverado 3500 HD is designed to work, and that’s apparent in its exceptional towing ability and its trailering technology. The 3500 HD promises a maximum payload of 7,442 pounds and a maximum trailering capability of 36,000 pounds, both of which depend on how you configure the truck. In other words, are you opting for the Silverado 3500 HD with the 6.6-liter gas engine or the 6.6-liter turbo diesel, with single rear wheels or dual rear wheels, with two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, with a regular, double, or crew cab body style?

    Payload vs Towing

The 3500 HD powered by the 6.6-liter gasoline engine with two-wheel drive and dual rear wheels achieves the highest payload capacity of 7,442 pounds and a modest trailering capability of 16,800 pounds. Opting for four-wheel drive reduces the payload by several hundred pounds to 7,145 pounds. In contrast, the 3500 HD powered by the 6.6-liter turbodiesel with two-wheel drive and dual rear wheels drops the payload to 6,523 pounds but delivers the maximum trailering capability of 36,000 pounds when outfitted as a regular cab with a gooseneck or fifth wheel.

    Work-Ready Features

With any configuration, there’s no question that the 3500 HD is a capable hauler, and that capability extends even further with unique features like the truck’s spacious Durabed and the available Multi-Flex tailgate. The 3500 HD is a workhorse that’s designed to make your job easier, and that’s apparent in the Durabed, which offers the most cargo volume in its class with up to 83.5 cubic feet of space. The bed, which either comes in standard or an extended length, is equipped with 12 tie-downs that allow you to secure the bulkiest cargo with ease. You can also add LED cargo lighting and a 120-volt power outlet, both of which add greater capability.

Chevy’s Multi-Flex tailgate is a key component in the 3500 HD’s towing and hauling ability. Now available on every trim, the Multi-Flex tailgate isn’t your standard tailgate and offers six unique functions that meet a variety of towing and hauling needs. The primary gate opens using a switch inside the truck or buttons on the key fob or gate itself. The primary gate load stop is great for keeping longer items from sliding out of the bed, while the inner gate load stop prevents second-tier items from sliding out. The Multi-Flex tailgate also makes it easy to access your cargo by folding down the inner gate or extending the gate into a full-width step that can hold up to 375 pounds. You can even fold the inner gate out and use it as a work surface, which is convenient for reading blueprints, looking over paperwork, and more.

  • Technology

The black and tan interior of a 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500HD shows the steering wheel and infotainment screen.

The 2022 Silverado 3500 HD reflects the union between capability and technology with a vast suite of tools that enhance the truck’s performance at every turn. The 3500 HD comes equipped with a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen display that’s home to the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system, giving you access to your smartphone via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Chevy also offers a 15-inch multicolor Head-Up Display that puts everything you need, like active safety alerts, speed, mileage, fuel level, and more, in a crisp display on the windshield in front of you.

    Trailering Technology

The 3500 HD’s connectivity and infotainment features are impressive, but the truck’s trailering technology is what truly sets the pickup apart from others to give you the confidence you need to haul heavy loads. This towing technology starts with Chevy’s Advanced Trailering System, which you can access through the myChevrolet mobile app on your smartphone or via the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system. The system lets you create custom trailer profiles and puts all the information you need about your trailer within reach or view at all times.

Along with the Advanced Trailering System, you’ll have a bird’s eye view around the truck and trailer thanks to the 3500 HD’s available eight-camera system that delivers up to 15 unique views. The system offers four hitch views that make it easy to hitch and unhitch. You’ll also find six available driving views and five available parking views, all of which give you a clear view around the rig and help you navigate the road and any parking area with ease.

    Tow Safely

The camera system works in conjunction with a host of other towing technology like Jack-Knife Alert, Trailer Length Indicator, Trailer Angle Indicator with Guidelines, Bed View with Cargo Bed Zoon, and Bed Hitch Guidance. The Jack-Knife Alert actively monitors the position of the truck with the trailer and alerts you to potential jack-knife situations. The Trailer Length Indicator and Trailer Angle Indicator with Guidelines make it easy to change lines and navigate tight areas by alerting you to potential obstacles and overlaying guidelines on the screen to show you the path of the trailer. Together, these tools take the guesswork and stress out of hauling a heavy load and allow you to focus on the road and your safety.
