2017 Ford Explorer

Democrat and Chronicle

The seven-passenger Explorer has been an outright success since its reintroduction as a large car-based tall wagon. For its last updating it received both visual and mechanical updates, including more horsepower for the optional turbocharged four- and V-6 engines (a non-turbo I4 comes standard. All-wheel-drive is now available on all powerplants, but comes standard with the Sport and premium (and pricey) Platinum trim. The latter model takes its urban-luxury focus from Ford's truck-based products. For 2017 a new Sport Appearance Package for the mid-grade Explorer XLT includes darker 20-inch wheels Ebony Black side molding and a blacked-out roof rack. Inside there are leather and suede seat covers and side bolsters. Among the Explorer’s many options are navigation system, heated-and-cooled leather seats, hands-free power liftgate, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and front and rear 180-degree cameras with built-in washers to keep the lenses clean. The Explorer’s max tow rating is 5,000 pounds.
