Growing up around cars or near cars is one thing, but for some people the infatuation with cars is inborn. We often compare it to how some people love sports, or dancing, or fashion, or even music. It is hard to explain why something evokes such passionate responses, but they often do. And that zeal for the automobile is often exhibited at many local classic car cruise nights throughout the heartlands of America. It is at these types of shows where hot rods and American Muscle seem to dominate, along with the music of yesteryear.
Classic cars like this Chevelle usually cruise the strip or parking lot of the local car shows to the musical tunes of the 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s, and lately, even the 1980’s. Summertime car show music includes songs by artists like the Beach Boys, the Cadillac’s, or Chuck Berry. It’s a fitting tribute to those days where these chrome-laden muscle cars ruled the streets and power was expected, enjoyed, and in some cases barely regulated.
Last summer when listening to such music we spotted a near identical clone of this SS 396 Chevelle and with just one look, we were hooked. Today’s 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 also caught our attention. 1968 brought about a dramatic redesign of the Chevrolet Chevelle that represents one of the most notorious, sinister designs ever penned for GM Muscle cars. Could similar GM stablemates like the 442, GTO, or GSX have outperformed it? No doubt, but if you like Chevrolet’s cars, and you want something that is a full-size embodiment of Detroit Muscle from the 60s, you could easily justify the purchase of a Chevelle just like this one.
So why did “we” fall so hard for a Forest Green Chevelle SS 396? It is because in just one look this muscle car from a bygone era personified America and things like street cruises, baseball, apple pie, and a time in our nation when we had everything to gain, and a lot to lose. It is the type of car that puts hope in your heart in the depths of winter, and wind in your sails for spring because you know soon enough that V8 engine will thump to life to the beat of its own drum.
You will hear screaming tires struggling to grip the road as a powerhouse of Detroit Muscle thunders down the road representing the Stars and Stripes, and for all the good and bad, this car is as American as it gets.
