Combining breathtaking performance with day-to-day livability helped make Type Rs some of the most sought-after Japanese performance cars available today. While you might be familiar with the Acura Integra variant, overseas models also got the Type R treatment. The first Civic Type R offered in Japan was built on the 1997 EK chassis, like this example recently offered on eBay.

More Revs Equal More Power

Intended only for its home market, this 1997 Honda Civic Type R is right-hand-drive and shows just over 69,000 kilometers on the odometer. That works out to about 43,000 miles, or less than 1,700 miles yearly since new.

A B16B 1.6-liter, double overhead cam four-cylinder engine provides the power. This legendary power plant is known for its robust acceleration and reliability. In factory spec, it’s good for 182 horsepower at a lofty 8,200 rpm.

When released, the B16B had one of the highest power outputs per liter of any engine. Road tests at the time reported zero-to-60 acceleration times of around 6.7 seconds for a B16B-equipped 1997 Civic Type R, with a top speed of 140 mph. Like all 1997 Type R Civics, this one has a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive.

Less Weight Means Better Handling

The Type R is not just about powertrain. The transformation into a Type R affects many components. An extensive weight-loss program includes the omission of sound-deadening material.

Other performance upgrades include:

These features are still with this low-mileage example, which remains substantially stock and original.

For all its performance focus, the 1997 Civic Type R is not without a few welcome creature comforts. This car features factory air conditioning and power windows and door locks. In addition, a modern-ish Pioneer stereo was fitted in place of the original.

Legally imported from Japan last year, this 1997 Civic Type R is currently titled and registered in Montana. A well-cared-for example, the car has a complete service history, the original owner’s manual, and two sets of keys. A recent comprehensive service included a new timing belt, leaving nothing for the new owner to do but drive and enjoy.

While a new Civic Type R carries an MSRP nearly matching this $44,000 asking price, dealers these days mark it up by $20,000 or more. Meanwhile, this rare classic example continues to roll on the street as a legendary hot hatch.
